"LIST leadership position..."

For this question, did you guys just say "oh I was involved in such and such at instituion X." or included responsibilities, durations, etc etc

@Homoochan: I actually called Tulane with that same question. I was told to list the position held and the organization. No duration, responsibilities, or other details (they will match to your AMCAS).

Thanks so much!

Doing my secondary for Tulane today and thought I'd say hello. 😀

For the "what was the single most meaningful volunteer experience you have had?" question, do you think it would be a bad idea to talk about an experience I had in my senior year of high school (which was 10 yrs ago for me)? It still is the most meaningful, but perhaps I should stick to things that are recent enough to have been included in my primary application?

I'd say go for it. the last thing you want is being repetitive. put something that isn't on your primary. good luck! :luck:

dumb question, but does tulane accept additional recommendation letters? on their website, it only says that they require 3 (2 from science profs)... but nothing about additional ones. thanks!!

i just read the attachment that came along with the secondary application email. it says a maximum of three professors.... i guess that means no optional ones, but i haven't called so im not absolutely positively sure...

also, what is the acronym for tulane? is it TUSM? when i type that into google, i get temple instead of tulane. do you know what they go by?

I'm not exactly certain, but I don't believe Tulane uses an acronym. Maybe just Tulane SOM....?

I read somewhere on their site that said not to send extras. It said something like 'It's looked down upon to send extra letters.'

That is the only reason why schools get less than my normal combination of letters, and I only sent them three.

So, 2 of the letters must be from science profs. but this last one, can it be from anyone, as in LOR from work or volunteering, or just any other prof.?

The first post of this thread says that it must be from any other prof. but on the website it says it can be from anyone...

http://tulane.edu/som/admissions/admissions-process.cfm

"Tulane's letter of recommendation requirement is as follows, a committee letter, letter of recommendation packet, or three letters of recommendation, two must be from professors of science, and the third letter can be from anyone of your choice."

VS.

"You should submit a composite evaluation prepared by the faculty committee of your undergraduate institution. If your school does not provide such a composite, then submit three individual, separate letters of evaluation, two of which should be from professors of science under whom you have studied and the third from a professor of your choice."

would you guys say the 3rd one is better to be from non-sci instructor or an MD?! in case i send 3 which is wayy too little 🙁

M1 here reminding you guys to CALL AND CHECK that your application/fee/LOR have been recieved in due time. This school manages to lose stuff often

Last time I called the lady sounded upset and told me they were creating a site where I would be able to check my status. 🙁

I asked about it when I applied last year and I was told they do discourage the submission of additional letters.

Yeah, based on my experience today, I would say the only thing that comes from calling the Admissions office for a status check is a long-winded and condescending "No."

So I emailed Tulane about my plans to take the MCAT on Sept. 10 and they told me the last day that I could take it for this year is August 31. I don't understand this at all...first of all, it's only 10 more days, second, they will have my score by mid-October and the secondary application isn't due until January 15, 2010. That's 3 months before the secondary deadline that they'll have my complete application. Can someone please explain this policy to me.

Did you ask them? Ask to speak to their director of admissions about it.

I emailed them last night and here was the response:

my question:

Hello,

I recently received a secondary application from Tulane University School
of Medicine and I had a quick question regarding the letters of
recommendation policy. In addition to the three required letters, does
Tulane accept additional letters?

their response:

No we do not require additional letters of recommendation. We consider
your letters from your AMCAS file.

I'm scratching my head, trying to figure out what that response means. Any ideas? I think based off of the responses already, I'll just stick to three. Thanks for your help guys!!

It sounds like they'll accept additional letters even though they're not required. I would save the email exchange between you and Tulane and if they say you can't send additional letters I would cite ambiguity in their response as a reason for you having submitted additional letters.

Just wondering..
What counts as an non-academic interest? (For example, would working as a research assistant count?)

and what about stuff like translating for drama series'?

I was gonna give this $100 I had to the little homeless kid outside, but then I decided to apply here instead. Hopefully it works out or they can explain to little Simon why he's not eating for the next 3 months...

SUBMITTED!

I would think research assistant is academic.... I assumed they wanted to know what we do for fun outside of work and school.

I called them about a week ago asking if I could send in any extra LORs and the lady I spoke to said the MAX is 4

Posting and LOLing on SDN.

I called the other day and was told status checks weren't even available yet, but reading this thread it seems like a lot of people have called and found out their status? Has anyone found out their application is complete via email or has everyone called?

I only think one person actually got a status check via the phone. We're all still waiting.

Yeah, I noticed that discrepancy too (anyone vs any professor of your choice for the 3rd letter). I think you can send your strongest letter from anyone for the 3rd letter. You can just cite the website if they questioned your 3rd letter. I had my research supervisor as my 3rd letter.

Also about additional letters. I was trying to figure out a way to send them additional letters. I called them and a lady said if I send in a letter packet (listed as one single letter entry on AMCAS) and inside contains 6 letters (more than 3 letters), it will be accepted. However, if I send in letters individually (separate entries on AMCAS), then I can only send in a maximum of 3 individual letters. I took this as maybe they don't want to process through adding more than 3 letters separately to your file. But just in case they would pick only 3 letters out of the 6 letters in the single letter packet (didn't ask her about this), I explicitly wrote out whose letters I want them to use to satisfy the required letters in one of the 2ndary app responses.

So main point of the story is this: You can send
1) A single letter packet which inside contains more than 3 individual letters of rec
OR
2) maximam of 3 individual letters of rec

Method (1) is a bit risky, so it's best to state somewhere in your 2nd app that you want them to use what letters for the 3 required. Or just be safe and choose option (2).

Also it takes time for you to send a letter packet now to AMCAS and for them to process it. Although it took only 2 days after sending the letters via Interfolio for AMCAS to mark them as received, I don't know if it'll be that quick for you. So think if it's worth the wait for you.

Also notice the webiste LOR instruction is as follows:

"Tulane's letter of recommendation requirement is as follows, a committee letter, letter of recommendation packet, or three letters of recommendation, two must be from professors of science, and the third letter can be from anyoneof your choice."

does anyone know if that also applies to the hobbies essay as well. Thanks!

Summer Mardi Gras. It'll be up later.

Whoa! How did I not hear about Summer Mardi Gras? If that was the case, the whole state would have shut down for a few days of drinking. There's no way I could have missed that.

But for reals, we've just got to be patient. They've got a lot going on. I'm sure they haven't forgotten about us.

I just sent a ~5 sentence, relatively well thought out and coherent email regarding something that I needed to append to my application to Tulane. In response, I got one word. It was also a typo'ed one word. Do the good people at Tulane really not like me that much, or has anyone else had a similar experience?

I sent the same email to a few other schools and was helped out tremendously, but as Tulane is one of my top choices was hoping it would go well with them... guess not

I would love the answer to this - I just started a new job and some other activities that I would like to add to my application, but based on stories of people calling, I am a bit nervous to pick up the phone...

So I guess we're all just waiting to hear back? I wish there was a way to know when we are "complete" and under review!

Hey all,

Has anyone received interview invites yet?

How about kids applying early decision? Any news?

Has anyone received a "complete" notification yet? I submitted mine on 7/15 and there's still no word.. calling didn't help much either.

For anyone else who has already submitted the secondary: are you still getting the "Thank you for registering message" when you login to the secondary page? I presume this is where the alleged "status" page will be once they finally put it up.
