So UB has dorms and on-campus housing? And anyone know the tuition for OOS students?

The waitlist isn't a terrible place to be. When I was applying, I called on "the day" in January and was in the bottom third. Don't read too much into that, there are still a few hundred people left to interview and there is a good chance that you will move up. Last year the entire middle third got off, and they dipped briefly into the bottom third. LOIs don't make any difference. It's not a bad idea to keep in contact, but don't waste the effort of a letter. If you are in the upper third, congrats, there is a great chance you will get in before May even rolls around.

I think it isn't too hard to find cheap ($600 for full 1B apt) housing which is what most students do, and then drive to school. They didn't show us dorms on my tour.

No, they do. The only problem is, you have to commute by campus bus every morning, but it's not too big a deal unless you'll be heading downtown a lot (which I think you probably do in your last years at UB). For your first two years it's probably a decent but expensive option.

If you get an off campus apartment around south campus that would be more convenient and A LOT cheaper. The only problem is, south campus isn't the safest area in Buffalo.

Your other option would be to live downtown (like myself). I live in a neighborhood called Allentown. It's pretty safe here, cheap and it's right around the corner from the UB Bus to south campus and the train/subway to south campus. It's also really convenient if you're going to be doing rotations at Buffalo General.

You'd have to ask someone who goes to the medical school. In my graduate program I don't think anyone lives on campus. I really don't know about medical students though.

Looks like UC (california) is raising tuition by 30%, so it may actually be cheaper for a californian to go to buffalo than it would be to go to a UC. You can get instate tuition after one year at buffalo.

Sorry, I realized after I posted that I left out a sentence. I meant to say that when January rolled around I was in the bottom third, but by the time May rolled around, and the waitlist was finalized, I had already moved up to the middle third, and was accepted in June.
 
Sorry to keep bringing this up but how is it that seemingly (based on sdn) not a single invite was sent out in the past month? I guess the month's not over but still...
 
I just got an email invite. Was complete since July. Debating whether I should go or not. I'm IS but not really sure about Buffalo.
 
I can only say from my own experience that living in Buffalo is great. So if you think about studying at UB, do it. I can only recommend it. When I studied at UB some years ago, there were quite some med students living at UB campus. Can't say if things changed since then. The price of the campus appartments has always been an issue, they're not the cheapest, that's for sure.
 
You know, I wrote up a big long response about why you should interview here, but then I realized I hadn't received an interview invite yet and I decided against it because it could open up a slot for me.

Yes, I'm selfish I know.

Eh, I'll just go quickly: weather isn't as bad as people think and the medical school has a lot of potential. The only problem with the city is it's kind of in the middle of nowhere (except for Canada, Toronto is just an hour away!).

Toronto an hour away??? Its two hours with no traffic and it can get up to 3+ hours with traffic...and during the major holidays it may take you this long just to cross the bridge.

But the location isn't that bad: NYC takes only like 7hrs, chicago like 8 hrs, detroit 5.5hrs, etc. Airplane tickets are often cheaper than the gas it takes to drive, though.

Eh, I've never been there so I guess I shouldn't have been commenting. But you're right, it's 1 hour 46 minutes, and with traffic it's probably worse. Does it really take that long with traffic?

I think Toronto just seems really close because we get their TV and radio stations.

I go there often and it has never taken me less than 2hrs since that google time does not factor in time you spend at the border for customs questioning/inspection and since toronto is in the top five biggest cities of North America and that route takes you down a major commuting thoroughfare. My recommendation is just driving to Niagara Falls Ontario and taking to GO commuter train to toronto (it winds up being cheaper than just the price to park in downtown toronto too). Once you get to toronto underground tunnels connect all the major attractions in the downtown area, and mass transit is pretty easy to navigate.
 
It takes about 3 hours to get to Toronto when I go from Rochester. So 2 hours seems about right from Buffalo. It is such a fun city with so much to do and a great nightlife. It also attracts the biggest acts in terms of concerts. The QEW (into Toronto) can be a pain however because you will be going 75 mph one minute... and then 5 mph the next. I have always had a blast when I go there... especially when my friends and I all went up together when we all turned 19 (aka legal in Canada)

I'll bet Montreal is better. 18 is legal, and the taxes aren't nearly as bad there (at least not when I went).

But yeah, Buffalo is really not a bad city either. I mean you're just going to be there for medical school which means you'll only be partying maybe once or twice a month, but when you do there are a ton of bars and restaurants to do it in (on Allen, Chippewa, Elmwood, Hertel, Main, etc). I'm sure the nightlife isn't even close to Montreal, but I don't think it's too terrible. I grew up in a town of 10,000 where there was literally nothing to do but go to the local gas station, so that's my basis of comparison.

I've heard Montreal is awesome. I've never been there but would love to go, especially now that I'm taking French. I've been to Buffalo a gazillion times and know I would be completely fine living and going to school there. In fact, I think I would love it. It is no where near the boring 'ghost town' many make it out to be plus it's really close to all of my friends and family.
 
hey guys! is anyone else still no action? as seen in my above post its been since july. do you think i should call? has anyone called and had any luck recently? i know i read something about it back a few months ago but am i being imaptient or is it really late?

Also still no action. Called and talked to Mr. Rosso a few days ago.

"Time is not a factor at Buffalo. We review apps in random order so do not worry if you submitted early. We always have spots open in the class so you will never be interviewing exclusively for a waitlist decision. We interview until the last week of April and you could be notified anytime from now until the end of March that you have been selected for an interview."

... or something like that.

I trust what Mr. Rosso says, but not his interpretation. There are obviously far fewer slots in April than there were in previous months. I'll bet a lower proportion of people are accepted out of April interviews than earlier months. Therefore, to say time is not a factor is probably misleading.

I have also been complete since July with "no action"

It seems like the people who got the earlier interviews had very high stats. Maybe they haven't thoroughly reviewed everyone, but perhaps they review people with higher numbers first?

I know someone (CA resident) who got an interview last spring, with a 3.9/27

I have a 31 and lower GPA, for what its worth...What are the stats of you guys who have also been "no action" for months on end?

Wasn't expecting it! So many months of no action. Interviewing this month :scared:
 
Where are you guys seeing this 'no action?' The last thing I got from Buffalo was a complete email, with no links sent in like August??
 
At least we know they're doing invites 🙂
