I was complete pretty early too...mid July. So things may move a bit slower as the season progresses.
 
Verified 9/15, interview email 10/13. My 2nd invite, actually. I don't know that there's any consistency to this whole application process. Except that it sucks.

Anyway, stoked to be interviewing at UTSW. Can't believe it, really.
 
Interview at SW was not bad. I would totally recommend going to the little clinical gig the day before. The students seemed hard-working and focused. They totally denied being cutthroat. That is encouraging, given SW's old rep of being super tough and the students being super high strung. In fact, the students all seemed friendly and mostly normal (except for a few kooks, but hey, maybe I'm one, right?)

Word is some OOS folks got in in late October. Now that I could take.

The interviewers asked the same questions, like "read any good books lately" and "if you could bring two people back from the dead, who" and "what weaknesses might hinder you in medical school." Later I heard others had those same questions. It seemed like they took their questions from the same list of 20 or so that they picked from.
 
It's always nice to hear from the home state 😀. Too bad there are no options for choosing dates...
 
I probably had my best interview performance here. My two interviewers were pretty nice though. It must be those Texas interviewers. So causal.

I hope I hear good news from this school. I would love to attend. 😍
 
Sorry if I missed this in the other pages of the thread. Does UTSW send "complete" emails? Or is it normal that I haven't received anything since submitting my secondary?

I got an email for completion on August 7th.

My TMDSAS sent my app on July 30th. I had already finished my secondary beforehand.

Maybe it's just slow now? :meanie:
 
Anyone know if interviewing earlier matters at UTSW? I can't make it for the date they invited me for or there other December date. I don't want to have to push it back all the way until January.

They are rolling and will start sending out acceptances on Nov 15th. I would say the earlier the better since every week you wait, the number of available spots will decrease.

Eek. May have to play around with other interview dates even though they were scheduled way before.

Yeah, this. They specifically said that they would send out 300-ish acceptances by mid-December. You should be just fine with the 11/7 interview if you can make it.
 
since 11/15 falls on a sunday, would they let us know the friday before or the monday after?

Nothing happens for TX residents before the 15th. Not sure if UTSW will do anything on Sunday, but I kinda doubt it.

On the other hand, the Texas Tech admissions lady said she'd be emailing out acceptances from home on the 15th. But, I would imagine activity on the 15th will be the exception rather than the rule. 👍

Hooray! Just got an acceptance to UT Southwestern (OOS, of course).

Pretty happy about it. Even the gym is nice.

Last year the 15th fell on a Saturday, but Anne McLane sent out acceptances on Friday.

My buddy and I both interviewed on Oct 3. For some odd reason almost everyone OOS who interviewed from my school (BYU) interviewed that same day.

It looks like you might have been there that same day maybe?

Someone that is part of the school told me that ~50 of the 750 that get invited to interview are automatically screened due to obvious reasons.

The other 700 are just kept waiting until possibly the august before school starts.
Apparently, if you are interviewed at this school, that means that you are a good applicant for them..

however, for me, I'm probably a fringe interview with way below average gpa and a below average mcat.. but I was told i had a " great interview"
Obviously, that can't hurt..

but how much weight does this school put in the interview? If i was selected to interview, and had a "great interview" as said so by the MD interviewer, would they still reject me?

Could you explain this a bit more, please? What do you mean "screened due to obvious reasons" and the others are kept waiting? I interviewed here as well and would like to get clarification on what you meant here. Thanks!

(also, this is someone that is in-the-know at the school, not another applicant?)

if you are part of the ~750 that they interview ( 774 last year), Wes Norred said that with very few exception, most if not all of these get into A medical school considering the great applicants they ask to come interview. I'm not sure where that puts me however, since this is my only interveiw so far : P.

The interview, from what I was told by an interviewer that did not interview me, is a screening process.

Pretty much, NO matter what your stats are, if you do not exhibit certain qualities that they want for people that practice medicine, you will be screened. I was told last year, 50 people right off the bat were screened.

They just want to interview you to see if you are a right fit for their school. out of these remaining 700, 350 are offered acceptances with 230 matricualting. (10 join from previous classes who have failed or defered = total of 240 class size) At the interview, Dr. Wagner said 220+ are offered before Dec 15th with 120 rolling spots offered till august. This is where people choose to reject UT southwestern's offer so that it can go to someone else. I'm not sure if there is an actual wait list...

Buut basically, sometimes... people just don't know until august..

Out of they 700, I can only assume at this point that 80-90% are in state to reflect the % of instate/ out of state applicants on MSAR... However, I read from a website 70 were interviewed from out of state. How many spots out of the 350 are offered to these 70, i'm not sure.. but eduers ( however accurate that site is) said 60 spots were offered to OOS in 2007 which takes a lot out of the 350 offered spots... so I can only speculate now ( and someone can clarify) that there is ~290 spots for the remaining 630 in state-ers due to UTSW's high affinity to offering spots for OOSers. ( 23 of which matriculate due to OOS 10% rule)

Translation "screened" = "crazy." For one reason or another. The interview does count but, grades and scores still count a lot.
 
Im also oos. I interviewed Oct. 3rd but haven't heard anything yet :|
Waiting is no fun.
 
I recently learned of a few people who got into both UTSW and Yale, and chose UTSW. Two that I know of are at UTSW right now. I am not totally surprised, and I find it interesting. Although it is a long shot, my first choice is still Yale. But I think UTSW is SOLID. I would love to go there. And barring an acceptance from Yale, I probably will. But I would love to know why those who chose UTSW over Yale did so. Money? Curriculum? Location?

How long do you get to keep your admission offer for UTSW??
I'm hoping Yale does choose you then so that we can have more spots open for us : D

Ha! I love it! I am stoked to even have a spot anywhere, let alone UTSW. But to answer your question, if I get an offer to Yale I will not hose anybody by withdrawing at the last minute. Most likely this won't be a problem--Yale is a little bit of a long shot 🙂. In fact you may notice that I even withdrew from many interviews, partially to allow others the shot once I was comfortable with my app. Wouldn't you or anyone else do the same? I mean we only need one offer, right?

BUT i mean still I was wondering, how long does one get to keep a spot?
Because 2009-2010 MSAR said 3 weeks.. But, that's odd because some hold until Feb..so maybe just OOS-ers can only hold it for 3 weeks?

You can hold all of your acceptances until May 15th, at which time you must choose one. So, in theory, anyone could hold this and every acceptance until May 15th, just like everyone else. The whole waitlist option presents yet another curve ball; you can remain on a waitlist for another school until classes start at yours. So one could get into another school off of a waitlist the day before classes start and pull out of the initial acceptance that late in the game.

But, back to a previous point, just think of how awkward it would be if adcoms forced you to decide whether or not you are going to go to their school before other schools have even given out a single offer. They would be forcing you to predict the future, and the last time I checked my crystal ball it wasn't working.

However, you make a good point: if you have an acceptance to a school that you are not interested in, it is most ethical to withdraw very quickly so that the next applicant in line to be accepted can be notified that much earlier. If your question is really "if you get into Yale will you be courteous and give up your spot sooner rather than later?" the answer is a resounding yes! Unless between now and then(if then even happens) I decide UTSW is the school for me. And right now UTSW is sounding awfully good.

Hey clearsight, congrats on the acceptance! I saw your post about some choosing UTSW over Yale and couldn't help but chip my two cents in. While I didn't apply to Yale myself, I do know their curriculum is extremely research oriented, and I imagine they tend to attract a lot of applicants that are pretty certain they want to go into academic medicine and center their careers around research. A number of my classmates fall into this camp, but I'd say the better part (including myself) are on the fence. They'd like to get involved in significant research while in medical school, but aren't sure yet where their research/clinical equilibrium lies. This uncertainty may lure some away from research-centered programs like Yale toward straddlers like UTSW.

Of course, in-state tuition and warmth (nearly) year round can be compelling, too.

Second looks are a good opportunity to really see which programs 'feel' right. Congrats again... maybe we'll be fellow med students next year. 🙂

I've got a friend that goes to UTSW( as a medical illustrator) from BYU.
If you came here, i'm sure you'd meet her. she's mormon too and ya'll kinda find each other out haha.

Can anyone elaborate on this? I mean are they looking for students that act and speak like a 'traditional' doctor would? Or is it a matter of perceived enthusiasm? I guess I'm wondering what specific qualities they consider a 'fit' for their school.

I interview on 12-12 and I would give an arm and a leg to go there....they have something like 5 nobel prize winners on staff there, plus its only a few miles from where I live 😀

So you're basically saying that once they invite you to interview with them then they have already reviewed your app and have decided that your mcat/gpa/lor's are all acceptable for them? I also consider myself to be very average with my gpa and mcat, and although I come from a very disadvantaged background I'm still not very confident I will gain admission. Perhaps I should feel more confident?

Yes pretty much if you are the 700 that havent been screened from the interview process , they'll want you. As to the description of what exactly it is that they look for in a doctor, I don't know. : P

that's just what they told me. Im sure you need to be yourself though.otherwise it'll seem unnatural and contrived.

i'm probably even more average than you are.. probably less gpa than you and most applicants although I do have a trend.

In fact, I don't think i'll be prematched on nov 15th and may end up competing with people like you : )
i'd give in arm and leg to come to this school as well. 350 spots for 700 interviews!
 
Does anyone know about the Clinical Rounds on the day before the interview? Does this have any impact on the admissions whatsoever? Has anyone not gone to this? I have a final exam on the day of the Clinical Rounds so I'm going to have to pass it up...should this be a concern for me?

verified early aug. submitted secondary soon after. i got my "you are complete" e-mail mid august. kinda vague i know. sorry.
