Looking at past posts – the general recommendation is to send updates to your file only after a waitlist (rather than a post-interview hold). Does that mean they frown upon sending a nicely worded letter of intent and update on new things that the interested student will be doing until matriculation???
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On a side note...
I wish everyone else – waiting on an interview/hold/waitlist the best of luck and to keep their spirits up. I genuinely believed that I would be ineligible for a great school like Case, but somehow I was graced with the opportunity to interview. The way I see it, Case is my top choice, but should the powers that be determine that I am not suitable for their program, it doesn’t necessarily mean that I won’t be a great doctor. It just means that I’ll be travelling another path to becoming a great doctor =).
Silly old me just wanted to remind everyone that they were special for even completing the behemoth that is medical school application - and to keep the faith, particularly in a frenzied application season.
She captures the top post and doesn't even gloat. Stay classy, Emmeline!
Hey Emmeline, we talked on PM before your interview. I just wanted to let you know I hope you get good news from Case. IMO they have the best admissions process of all the schools, and even if you don't feel like you have a great chance because of grades or whatever, keep that hope alive!
Nice night here at CCLCM. Just thought you guys might appreciate the view. Later
This. Best of Luck Emmeline. Did you interview at Case or CCLCM or both?
What typically goes on during second look weekend?
In general, second looks are geared towards individuals who may be on the fence about a particular school. Often it is only for accepted applicants (the notable exception being CCLCM last year, probably not to be repeated this year). It is in no way obligatory, not will it affect your acceptance.
It is the "elevator pitch" and a serious opportunity to interact with the faculty, current students, and indeed likely classmates. In many ways, you can think of it as a reverse interview. You are the one who is supposed to be critically asking yourself "is this where I can see my self for the next few years?", "Is this the school that will best prepare me for my career?", etc. etc.
You will hear about academics in more detail, student organizations, possibly see housing opportunities, and more about the host city and surrounding areas.
As for the particulars of the CP second look...Myuu will have to respond.
Case UP is what I'm shooting for =).
I really wasn't fishing for compliments (although it is appreciated). 😳
I think you mean UP. Granted, I could make up all sorts of fanciful details about CP's second look, but that would use more neurons than I am currently permitted to engage.
Essentially, UP second look is awesome. We put you up in the intercontinental suites, feed you, show you some musical performances from the current students (including but not limited to Doc Opera song and dance numbers and a certain very talented drummer), and the like. The following day, we reintroduce you to our curriculum, remind you what IQ is like and let you take it out for a spin yourselves, introduce you to some of our alumni (and their bountiful dinners), then put you out on the town again for another evening of fun with your potential classmates.
Schedule may vary slightly from year to year, but I assure you, awesomeness is preserved.👍
Soooo... second look sounds for sure worth attending even if I'm pretty sure of Case UP (given current options) 👍
So basically a weekend full of awesome 😀
Do married students generally bring their spouse or is that frowned upon? My wife will be in the city either way since her family is there but I'm just curious.
Case's second look weekend conflicts with WashU's. 🙁 Decisions decisions....
Well I suppose I've got nothing better going on that weekend... 😉 Very excited to see the place again when I'm a little more relaxed. And hopefully the weather will be nicer this time.
You realize that your lack of nice weather from before is probably more representative of cleveland weather, right? :laugh:
At least the river no longer burns.
Go Case!
Hey, now. That river hasn't been set ablaze since 1968. And if the winter's too cold, well, you know where to find the Cuyahoga.
I happen to like the weather here.
The change of seasons is awesome. That pic yesterday of the courtyard took my breathe away. You don't get moments like that in florida. Makes me peaceful actually.
Love it here. Going snowshoeing tomorrow (hopefully)
How cool is that?
For the person who asked about ending times. My UP ended at 3 30, which was good cause my flight was at 6 (though it got delayed due to snow storm).
My CP ended at 4.
Yay for long threads! 😀 Lol reading this has been keeping me entertained during downtime on set (PS if you like comedies you should definitely check out “Ten Year” when it comes out). Anyhow I had a quick question. How long is the walk from the Euclid/East 120th St. station to the Glidden house? Is it relatively safe around 6pm and practical with a suitcase? Thanks!
That is in East Cleveland after dark. Personally, I would not do that. The Cedar stop is a bit safer, I think, but involves an uphill walk. Alternatively, you could get off at the train at tower city and take the bus (the 9) nearly all the way there.
I stayed at the Glidden house, as well. I got off the train there ~5 and there was nobody around (it was a little creepy). I walked around the immediate area later at night and didn't feel unsafe. (note: I'm a big tall man)
Is it really that unsafe directly adjacent to campus?
That's not directly adjacent to campus. That's in East Cleveland. On the other side of the tracks, quite literally.
But no, it's not unsafe directly adjacent to campus. I can't guarantee that at 3 in the morning, but provided you do all the safe things you normally do, everything's fine.
Oh ok... Google maps makes it look like it's practically on campus. Thanks for the info.
I mean... technically speaking, it's a 5 minute walk from the north side undergrad dorms. It's about a 20 minute walk from the med school campus though. But honestly, it's not that bad of an area, especially since they've been building so many new apartments around it. As an undergrad, I used to take the train there when I had a late flight, I made sure there was someone walking with me as a precaution. It's just that I wouldn't advise walking there alone at night, especially when you're not used to the area. I wouldn't advise walking alone at night in any area that is not well lit or frequented by people in any big city really....
In general, I have never really walked any long distances alone at night. People who are used to an isolated rural or suburban campus just need to be aware that there are lots of people who aren't part of the university all over the place, since it has a major hospital system and is surrounded with businesses. I'd feel safe walking to and from the bus stop.
I couldn't agree more! The waitlist was a bit tough waiting, but worth it! You will be a doctor either way - it's just a matter of how you get there. Case is a fabulous way to get there, but other schools have wonderful merits as well.
The way that I considered it, after I had an acceptance at another school, was to focus on being excited about the school I was accepted to, and when/if Case called, it would be a gloriously delicious icing on the cake.
And then, when I got the call in May, pure joy.
Folks,
The majority of the second round of phone calls for CCLCM went out today. 9 of 10 phone calls to accepted applicants were made, and a final acceptance phone call will go out as soon as their paperwork is finalized.
Congratulations to all those who where accepted. 🙂
To everyone else, chin up and best of luck!
Thanks for the info. I wish they would get around to rejecting me already, if that's what they're gonna do. I have one week to drop biochem with refund, which would really help my bank acct lol. I was hoping that not getting any sort of hold status was indication that I might get good news, but now I feel like I'm in the reject pile. Is it a good idea to call and ask?
Accepted to CCLCM today!!!! 😀
Congrats! 🙂
Accepted to CCLCM today!!!! 😀
Yayyy! Congrats!!!! ^_^
I just got an email about second look for CCLCM today. The orientation lasts from Thursday, March 31st to Friday, April 1st (day ends at around 1PM) and they are putting us up at InterContinental Suites Hotel. I wonder if we'll all be in the same hallway or something? That would be fun 😛. Ahhh, can't wait!!..
Seconded, both the congrats (yay!) to those accepted and the request for notification.
Would it be possible to let us know when the 10th person has been notified so we know if we don't have to add biochem to fulltime jobs this semester? 🙂
Thanks
You know, biochemistry is a topic that is key to medicine. You're going to end up covering the material anyway. Just take the class. It'll be good for you.
Then maybe just to restore sanity to this week??? 😛
Pretty pretty please with bananas on top?? :banana::banana:
I would rather free up time to be in more performances (already in 2, could potentially be in 4-6) and free up money that I need rather badly. The time won't be wasted partying. I won't have time to participate in my dance interests to this degree during medical school.
I've never been one to shy away from hard classes; I'll graduate with 140 engineering and hard science credits (out of 4 years), not to mention the remaining 24 credits in non-science stuff. I'm already in four engineering courses this semester, I don't need even more work.
Anyway, I called this morning to see if I was still in the running. I was told there had been no decision made about my file but that the committee will be meeting again today and I should hopefully find something out by next week. Look like I'll still be in BCH, at least for the time being.
^ I wish I at least had the option of taking biochem now 🙁 At the school where I work, the class goes from March until June 10 (stupid quarter system), which doesn't give me much time to haul myself and my stuff across the country by July. Grrrr.
Another round of UP decisions is going out tomorrow, right? :xf:
- Interview coming up for CWRU - UP in a couple of weeks.
- Already interviewed - went well, I think - at UMDNJ and Drexel. Waiting to hear.
- Still have two more interviews to go - plus CWRU
-CWRU - DREAM SCHOOL
Emmeline definitely has the right attitude. I'll be adopting it. Thanks.
- This is a helpful, supportive thread. Great job.
saving the best for last? 😉🙄
but that the committee will be meeting again today and I should hopefully find something out by next week.
so does that mean it's the last meeting ever? or are there more than 3?
Myuu is 100% correct (she usually is). Biochem is important.
It is "Highly recommended" for the MSTP and UP folks, officially.
From our website:
CLEVELAND CLINIC LERNER COLLEGE OF MEDICINE OF CASE WESTERN RESERVE UNIVERSITY WEBSITE said:
The mission of the CCLCM is "to educate a limited number of highly qualified persons who seek to become physician investigators and scientists committed to the advancement of biomedical research and clinical practice."
My emphasis.
I have ignored previous similar comments, but I grow tired of hearing people gripe about biochem. No one is forcing you guys to take it, or forcing you to apply to CCLCM.
Like Myuu said: ANY premed would be better off taking it before starting med school. Serious candidates who are interested in a research career after medical school should most definitely take it. CCLCM candidates are supposedly committed to a research career, so this should be a non-issue.
Withdraw from biochem, if it is such a big burden on you guys. But repeated or continued complaining about biochem raises serious doubts in my mind about your intentions and whether CCLCM is the right place for you.
Furthermore, if one additional course is causing you this much grief, how will handle all of the extra coursework, summer research requirements, and finishing a year "behind" your friends? I suspect you will not be happy here at our program.
A simple undergraduate course in biochemistry is a small price to pay for those determined to become physician investigators. But that's just my two cents.
There was no indication that it was the last meeting. I feel like it may have been one of the "mini meetings" vc described.
First, I greatly appreciate your help in this thread and how helpful you've been in general.
However, your post is rude, melodramatic, and incorrectly and perhaps dangerously presumptive.
Bottom line: if you want to go to CCLCM, take the class. If you don't, then, well, don't.
I hope VC77777's pretentious finger-wagging isn't a reflection of the kind of "camaraderie" found at CCLCM...
Do we know what range of interview dates were considered for this round?
Also, does anyone know when the online status is updated for CCLCM?
Congrats to everyone who was accepted!
Agreed. Even if it does mean that I'll have less time to slack off before school starts (boohoo) 😛
You know... you will have time to have fun in med school.🙂 I took up inline skating, speedskating, hockey, archery, and snowboarding. I can't necessarily devote the time I'd like to those things, but it's good to have something you can relax with.
It's not like you get to med school and your life ends unceremoniously.
To those still awaiting the call - and trying to figure out whether to drop Biochem
You're probably really frazzled by the anticipation:uhno:. I empathize with you - weighing the financial cost of the class + doing things you feel like you'll miss out on because after all the clock doesn't slow down or go in reverse after you start medical school is not an easy process.
I think what the members of this board are trying to communicate is that it is in one's best interest to take a course like Biochem (Flowrate: I spoke to many engineering majors in past interviews who made the switch and the two classes they recommend - were Biochem and Anatomy), particularly if you have the opportunity to and especially if it is required.
However, that is a personal decision for you - possibly borne of your financial situation/previous commitments/etcs. Although this board is a forum for airing counsel (as well as grievances), everyone understands that despite their 2 cents (as valuable as it is) - such decisions such as taking extra classes are personal decisions. From all that I've heard from students during tours, it's about prioritizing - if there is something that you love to do, you'll find a way to fit it in your med school schedule.
Anyway, good luck on the call...and good luck on whatever you decide to do.👍:claps:
Sorry if previous post sounds way mushy for this thread...I'm taking a break from Biochem by checking my subscribed threads...and James Taylor's "You've Got a Friend" was streaming from Pandora...
