IUMED, I think it's for people interviewing on Jan. 5.

I will be getting interviewed on that day, and I have had no such e-mail, so I'm guessing they just like you more than me 🙂.

Oh dear, the reception is for minority applicants....sorry, I should have mentioned that important part.

So I interviewed on the 29th of September, and still haven't heard anything. Is this normal or should I just consider myself silently rejected?😕

It's not over until it's over. Last year, my friend didn't find out he was accepted until March.

Yeah, I agree with Indygobu...if you read last year's thread, you'll see several people who interviewed early and did not hear anything until months later. Don't give up! If it would make you feel better, call them to inquire...that is if you've not done so already.

thanks for your optimistic advice! i called the admissions office just to make sure i was still active, and they assured me i was still under consideration. i'll cross my fingers!!!

indygobu, I got that same email. committed, I'll call tomorrow better! Thanks for responding, I appreciate it!

If you have a onestart account, or you were given one after the secondary application, you can check your status under admissions in the SIS student's center. I recently found that out myself.

Do you know if they actually update it though? I have a friend that's in, but in the SIS it still says applicant and a decision has not yet been made.

Just to clarify for everyone, IUSM does NOT utilize rolling admissions. In fact, the admissions office & paperwork says that a final decision will be made by JUNE 1, which is obviously very late in the cycle. IUSM is notorious for keeping applicants in limbo until the end of the cycle, or even over summer with the waitlist, so just try to keep your head up and send any updates you can to help your ranking/score system they use. I am in the same boat - very anxious for a decision - but "no news is good news" is especially true at IUSM... this coming from previous applicants and current students whom I know. Good luck!!

I am interviewing here Jan 5, out of state. Does anyone have any tips or know what percent of OOS applicants they accept after interview?

Don't they send out acceptances on the 15th of every month?

So I interviewed last year and didn't get in. They wanted to see me finish my graduate program and see how I did and I did well. I interviewed last month and I was wondering if anybody knows how IU treats 2nd time interviewers. Do they only invite u back for a 2nd interview if they think u're ready to be admitted or is it just a formality to invite everyone with the minimum requirements for an interview?

So...I interviewed here in September and I just received an email asking me to attend a second interview in January. Has this happened to anyone else? I am not sure how I feel about this.

Wow, I really have not heard about that. I hope everything goes well. Have you been accepted somewhere else?

Whoa I've never heard of that before, at any school period. Did u ask them why?

Anybody get any letters?

I was told they went out last week, and went out again yesterday.

Call them and ask. This isn't normal and I'd definitely want to know the reasoning behind it.

Any current medical students here (or other prospectives who have already done some digging) know what the merit-based scholarship situation is? I found a page on the IU site that has several listed but doesn't really say what the amounts are. Just wondering if anyone has heard what we might expect (if anything at all).

I was unaware that they gave out merit-based scholarships. As an OOS applicant that makes me happy to hear, but I doubt I'd get any money anyway 🙁

I received my letter of acceptance to IUSM today (11/17). The letter was marked December 16th.

If you're waiting, hang in there. This was my second time applying to medical schools (had to boost my MCAT score a little), and it was worth the wait.

I posted some of my stats so you can see who they are accepting right now.

-Biology Major
-GPA: 3.84
-MCAT: P:11 V:9 B:10 W:Q
-2.5+ years of research (presentations, papers, symposiums)
-Went to South Africa and Costa Rica on medical service trips
-500+ hours of volunteer (Big Brothers Big Sisters, Ayuda y Aprende, Hospitals Etc.)
-President and officer of clubs
-TA for sophomore level biology class
-IN state resident

Good luck to everyone! You're next! 🙂 :xf:

Here's the website I'm referring to:

http://msa.iusm.iu.edu/financialaid/Guide/scholarships.htm

I just was wondering if anyone had any specifics.

The scholarships are based on a bunch of random factors. They're based on things like where you grew up, promising to work for so many years after medical school in a certain area or hospital, etc.

My suggestion would be to scan through the scholarships, see which scholarships you are interested in, and contact Jose Espada [email protected] -Director of Financial Aid IUSM (http://msa.iusm.iu.edu/staff.htm#finaid) for further information. That is what I am currently doing right now.

If I figure anything else out, I will post it on here. I am currently trying to figure this stuff out myself. 🙂

Apparently Eli Lilly has a member in the scholarship committee, I guess they give generously to the school.

For most of the merit-based scholarships you don't have to apply...they just e-mail and let you know. Amounts range from a few grand to half or full tuition and fees for all four years. It's mostly based on GPA and test scores and is a recruiting tool really. Then there are some you can apply for based on your background, or if you are willing to make a commitment to primary care in an underserved area.

Got my acceptance in the mail this morning 🙂 it was also postmarked Dec 16th.

hopefully more of you will be hearing back today. good luck!

Really? I don't have a onestart account nor was I given one. I'm OOS, received the secondary email on 11/22, submitted the docs the next day but was told I was complete until about 1 week ago. I guess I'll be interviewing late in the cycle. Thx though!

CONGRATULATIONS to you and all who've gotten it!!!! 👍 I hope I'm as fortunate as you all! 😛:xf:

so this semester was my most difficult. My father passed away🙁 , from a heart attack, in the summer while I was taking a 5 hr class, which made that class extremely difficult and as a result my science gpa fall below 3.6. After the semester I was able to get my science gpa back above 3.6 (3.62), but my cumulative fell slightly below 3.7 (3.66 now). I thought I could work through this grief, but it's not that easy.
Do you think the adcom will look down upon my lower gpa even though I suffered a terrible loss?
btw I interviewed on 11/3 and my interviewer was deeply moved by me talking about my father in my personal statement. I even became emotional when he asked me about him. My interviewer even said he wanted to see me there in the fall.

Hey, sorry to hear about your dad. I don't think that a 3.66 GPA would keep you out of medical school. You worked hard all along and a 3.66 is still a great GPA. People have gotten into medical school with less.

My sympathy extends to you and your family. Indiana, from my understanding, truly values each student's stories. And overall, I think medial schools would not fault you for the extenuating circumstances. A sincere Happly Holidays to you and your loved ones🙂

You may find comfort in knowing that 40% of a students rank at IU is based off their interview score.

I thought it had half of that weight. From what I've heard it was 40/40/20, GPA, MCAT, interview, respectively, if there even was a weighting process at all.

So...I'll be interviewing in January (YAY! :soexcited:) and wanted to ask you all a few things. Is lunch included? (I gotta show up at noon). Do you know whether the tour is entirely indoors or not? I ask because if it includes the outdoors, I want to dress appropriately so as to not freeze myself. I prefer skirt suits but since it will be cold and snowing, maybe a pant suit would be better? Also, any tips for OOS/warmer climate state peeps like me travelling to IUSM?

Congrats on your interview! I think a trouser suit is a good idea, but you may be able to pull it off with a skirt suit depending on what you wear on your legs. I've not yet interviewed at IU (January also), but I've visited and I know that the med school is connected by tunnels and skyways (is that what they're called?), so you may not need to be out in the cold much. However, it's good to be prepared.
Hope someone else can give some insight...

Congrats on your interview!! You will spend <5 min walking outdoors (from building to building) because as the previous poster said, most of the buildings are connected with walkways. Lunch is not included, but they will have cookies and drinks available in the waiting area. Make sure you're prepared for this climate, though -- a couple of weeks ago we were in the single digits with wind chills below zero -- I would check wthr.com (Indianapolis weather) a week prior to your interview so that you can guage what the weather will be like while you're here! GL

adrmille is right. During my interview we did walk outside for a little bit but that was just to get a pretty good look at some of the surrounding hospitals and buildings, so like mentioned before, check out wthr.com and dress accordingly, though as a guy, its pretty simple. My interview was in November, so weather wasn't too bad. As far as food, b/c of the late start, I ate breakfast at my hotel and didn't get any snacks at IUSM. Awesome school though, really liked it! Congrats and good luck!

I interviewed on Aug. 25th and was accepted in the December round of mailings. IU is serious when they say that no news is good news- keep your hopes up!

Is there a seat deposit for IUSM this year? If yes, how much is it?

Thanks so much for your advice "Maiden," "adrmille," and "NDgrad09"! I appreciate it and best wishes to you all too! 😀

I have an interview this Wednesday, 1/5, at 10:15a.m.

Biology major, with Chemistry minor.
GPAc 3.96, GPAs 3.94
MCAT 28Q
Tutor; President of Premed Club; Work Study for Cadaver Lab + Nursing Anatomy Labs
450+ volunteer hours.

How does my application appear, and does anyone have any advice for the interview itself?? IU is my #1 choice of school.

Sounds like you have a pretty good shot. Your GPA and extracurriculars appear to be very solid. Your MCAT is a little below average, but nothing catastrophic to your application. In-state residents get into IU with 28's and 29's all the time -- I have two friends who are MS1's and got in with 29's.

I will be going through the interview process on Wednesday as well, and I hear the interview is very low-key and relaxed.

[T]he interview is very low-key and relaxed.

This. Mine was a very enjoyable conversation, not at all stressful and I came out really impressed by how much I connected with my interviewer.

I see that IU has a "social and behavioral science requirement". What exactly does this mean? The only thing I can think of is psychology, is there anything else that you all took to fulfill this?
