Ugh. Deferred. This is the least efficient, most wasteful and unnecessarily stressful process one could conceive. Whatever, at least I got a USB drive for schlepping out to Columbus, smh.

Deferred as well. Seeing as they've already taken previously deferred applicants, I remain hopeful.

Lol, well, at least you didn't have to wait months, and months...and months...like those of us in California do for our in state schools. Good luck!

I haven't read all of the forums, but have scanned through at least the last third and was wondering if they mentioned the new curriculum for anyone that has interviewed. I work at OSU and attended a town hall meeting. The curriculum is set to be fully inplemented for the 2012 class (to coincide with OSU's switch to semesters), but there will be a few pilot groups/blocks for this years class.

Anyways, just curious if they mentioned it in any of the interviews.

Thanks!

Accepted!!! So stoked--I loved my visit. Who else is in from interviewing on 1/26?

Does anyone know how long after accepting your spot in the class will you receive an official packet through mail? And is this also when you pay your deposit?

I got a written acceptance letter about 2 weeks after I got the call. The letter basically said that payment is due by May 15th (as well as information about any requirements that may be missing). As far as I know, though I may be wrong, all deposits should be refundable until May 15th anyway. No packet yet.

Any current med students who went to second look remember what time the day is over on Saturday?

Also, what other activities are planned on Friday/Saturday besides the dinner at the State Rotunda thing and the breakfast at the Faculty Club?

Thanks in advance!

Hi all,

I recently was offered an interview to this school after submitting a late application. However, the interview is in April.

Is it worth attending an interview here in April? Will I be doomed to be placed on the waiting list? I've been fortunate enough to have acceptances elsewhere, but OSU is a great school that I would love to visit and interview at.

But, if there is little to no chance of being accepted from an interview in April, I want same some money and time.

Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

i would say it is definitely worth attending. at the interview we were told they never interview for the waiting list, that every interview is for a spot in the school.

those sentiments are reflected in this news release from OSUCOM:

http://medicine.osu.edu/news/archive/2011/01/26/osu-college-of-medicine-extends-interview-season.aspx

So I submitted a secondary application - does it mean anything if I haven't heard anything? I didn't get rejected yet but I also haven't been offered an interview? Does that mean they just haven't gotten to my application yet?

For letters of interest, is it better to type it up and attach the letter, or just write it directly in the email? Should I include updated transcripts as well? Faxing? I dunno what to do...

2nd year here. I wouldn't bother sending in a LOI unless you personally find it cathartic to write one. I know for a fact that no one reads them. They are just put in your file and forgotten.

I think you also asked for how many get off the deferred list. Not sure how many get off the list during the interview season. However last years class had zero people come off the deferred list after interviews were done. The year before that only about 15 people got off the deferred list. Historically though OSU has taken 30-50 off the deferred list but it seems that they are a more popular choice for numerous reasons and they haven't gone to the deferred list nearly as much. (2nd look day has really improved by leaps and bounds)

Sorry to be a Debbie downer; I know how stressful this time can be for you. I actually got in off the waitlist in June so I know how it feels to be stuck in limbo.

My best advice to you is to keep your fingers crossed and hopes up but not obsess about your chances.

I find this odd. I emailed Dr. Capers my LOInterest and mailed a copy to the admissions office (addressed to Dr. Capers, as well). He emailed me back himself 4 hours later that day expressing his appreciation. I got an invite the following day.

But, you're the second year with experience. But maybe mine was very compelling and interesting 🙄

We might be talking about different things here. I was referring to a LOI post interview; which seemed to be the situation of the poster asking the question. Flo tells me they are not read.

LOI's post interview seem like a waste of time, the Admissions committe meets at the end of the interview day, so any LOI's that come in, come in after the decision.

Right, but for those of us who are deferred, wouldn't a letter of interest post-interview possibly be helpful? I know some people who were deferred early in the season have already obtained acceptances, though I'm not sure if they sent updates/letter of interest.

Any help on this topic would be greatly appreciated!

Ooh I misread. Yes mine was pre-interview. But I agree, seeing as how my interview was actually cut short because my interviewer had to get to committee (that's how soon after interviews they meet!), there's no way an LOI could do anything. Unless you're deferred, in which case, how can it hurt?

The admissions committee meets directly after the interview day, so an LOI sent after your interview day obviously won't make any difference on what happens then. However, if you are deferred, and then send an LOI, it will be read.

Last year, I think 4 or 5 people were accepted off the deferred list after the "commit to one school date." It was definitely not zero people.

Finally, if you are receive an interview at OSUCOM, you are interviewing for a seat in the class. There may be less seats available as you get further into the interview season, but there are always seats : )

Nothing here...come on, Dr. Capers! You can do it!

It is by far the worst anxiety I've felt through the entire process.

just got the call!!!! well, i actually missed it, but good news nonetheless. hang in there, Dr. Capers seems to still be making calls. mine was at 11pm sharp.

GOT THE CALL!

Best call ever. I love you, Dr. Capers. The only call I'm okay with answering at 10:40 pm!

Does anyone know how "easy" it is for non-Ohio residents to obtain residency for tuition purposes following the first year? I guess what I'm asking is how many out of state students typically qualify for the decreased tuition rates?

I got the call as well!! OOS 32S, 3.8. My first acceptance!

everyone as long as you follow very strict rules that make sure you stay in the state for 12 months and not leave for too long at a time

a few questions for current students-

I will almost definitely be going here and I'm trying to decide if the cost of the plane ticket for second look is worth it. Will I meet a lot of my future classmates or would it be mostly people who aren't really sold on the school yet?

When do I need to sign a lease by? I REALLY want to live within walking distance, do these places go pretty quickly?

Do you think the school does a good job of estimating cost of living expenses and did you take out loans to cover the full amount they suggest or do fine with a little less?

Thanks!

As a current undergrad at OSU, I can say that all of the excellent off-campus housing has been snatched up by November/December 2010. Yes, we sign leases 6+ months in advance. However, there are still good places to live a bit farther away from campus and you might be able to have some luck picking up sub-leases or searching for people who want a roommate.

Try going to OSU's off-campus housing website and doing a search. It's an excellent resource.

the area around the med center you can sign much later, I'd recommend 2nd look weekened, after you do some research online on your own.

Highly recommend you come to 2nd look, ya some people you meet won't necessarily be your classmates, but really majority of people who go really want to attend bc if not there's really no point to go. You will meet a lot of people who are 100% and others who are 50/50

does everyone's form letter after interview completed say it will take 10 business days to see a status change on your osumc account?

I had a great interview day on Wednesday! I was very impressed with the school. From the admissions staff to the current medical students everyone was so nice. Like everyone else has said, Dr. Capers is such a great guy. You can tell he enjoys what he's doing. During the day I had random students that would come up to me to shake my hand and wish me good luck on my interviews. Very friendly place.

I thought the interviews were very relaxed. I felt each interviewer really wanted to get to know me so they could present the best picture of me to the admissions committee. Do any of the current students know Dr. Wolfe? She was hilarious. I felt like I was laughing for most of my interview. The lunch with current students was very helpful. Was able to learn about the different learning tracks and other aspects of the school.

At the end of the day I felt like I knew why students choose OSU over some other schools in the state and country. It truly is a great school with a lot of oppurtunities to learn medicine from many great sources (lectures, shadowing, hospitals on campus, etc.). I also like how aggressive OSU is in regards to becoming a top 20 school. There are so many exciting projects currently going on.

Hoping to get a phone call on Monday!:xf:

spideyman44 what does your status online say currently? I interviewed on Monday and just want to check with other recent interviewees.

Under "Application Status" it just lists "Interview Invitation" and that my Secondary Application was received.

thanks alot; I don't mean to get too stressed or bent out of shape but this is my absolute dream school. I have done everything in my power to make this a possibility and being only a couple days away from finding out if I will fulfill my dream, the nerves are getting the best of me. I hope that my posts are not resulting in other's worrying. I am usually so easy going and good natured. I hope with all my heart that I am a Buckeye next year! O-H.......

I'm worried but I'm in the same situation. I have two #1 schools, OSU being one of them, and after my interview day they might be my overall #1. If I get accepted I'd be willing to convert to a buckeye fan....

Just got an interview for 3/23. Currently an osu buckeye so to get an interview right here is without a doubt a dream come true.

Nope. I developed an ulcer and probably an anxiety disorder waiting for one tho. but agonizing patience, ulcers, and anxiety is just the perfect recipe for success, you know?

I randomly stumbled onto this video clip that made me think of you folks on this fine eve of decision Monday...

Here's hoping this weeks batch receives many calls from Dr. Quinn "Hollywood" Capers :xf:.

Good Luck to everyone waiting!!!!

Newnimproved, if this is your dream school, I wish for you to get the amazing call on Monday! It would be the sweetest Valentine Day gift ever!!
