I got a interview invite for Feb 2nd after months of waiting. But there are many acceptance already, and it's pretty late in the season, do you think I am going to end up in rejection or hold anyways??
I know people who interviewed early March and eventually got in, though they had to come in off the waitlist.

Thank you wanderer100, I guess I will just cross my fingers and wish for the best. How's your application process by the way, mind if i ask?

I can't complain. I post frequently on various threads, so you can follow my activity from there or if you can find me on mdapps. I'm pretty much done with everything since I applied very early. Just waiting on a couple of schools and a few waitlists.

For those that have turned in their acceptance form, is there anything else we have to do at this time? I know eventually we need to have our transcripts sent in, FAFSA sent to Downstate (in a month or two), and those healthforms submitted by June ...but anything else, really? It doesn't sound like there's much until that Registration packet comes?

Nope, it seems like the only thing you have to turn in is the offer acceptance sheet. Everything, even the deposit, isn't due till at least May.

Hello All,

I am new to SDN, but have been reading all the posts and getting some good info about SUNY Downstate. Excited to interview Jan 25!! One of my top choices!!

Would love to PM other interviewees / students to learn their experiences! Anyone willing to share?

If you're interviewing that means they like you on paper and want to meet you. They don't interview for waitlist spots, as far as I know. When I applied a few years ago I interviewed in mid-late January and got accepted at the end of February, so it is of course still possible - interviews put you on the same playing field as everyone else.

hi guys! im interviewing tomorrow morning, very excited!

Question: how long is the cab ride from manhattan (where im staying) to Downstate? I'm staying in midtown since i have another interview in the city on tuesday. Trying to gauge my time.

Thanks!

I would suggest taking the subway into Downstate rather than a city cab. Either that or a private car service. According to Brooklyn residents I know, most say casually that city cabs don't really want to drive you into Brooklyn from the city.

My estimate is about 30-40 minutes, depending on traffic.

googlemaps is your friend. if you're going by subway hopstop.com is your friend.

Yea the entire trip by train should be about 45 minutes (including walking). By cab it could take up to an hour, depending on traffic.

If you're taking a cab, give yourself AT LEAST an hour door to door. It will prob take 35-40 to drive over, but like someone here said before, most cabbies hate driving to Brooklyn, and especially this far into Brooklyn. Its not legal, but a lot of cabbies will tell you they're not going there (sometimes even if you're already sitting in the car) and you'll be stuck looking for a cab for an unpredictable amount of time. If you take a cab, tell them to take the Manhattan Bridge, go south on flatbush avenue, and make a left on lenox road (which is about 2/3 of a mile past grand army plaza. Go 4 blocks - Downstate is at New York Avenue (you'll be coming in the lenox road entrance, not the clarkson ave entrance - just ask the sec. guard where the admissions office is).

Your better, more reliable bet is to take the subway. Take the 2 from the west side or 5 from the east side - go to the winthrop street stop and its a couple blocks walking from there. That'll be about 40-45 min from midtown to the door of ds (5 is a little faster)... but more if you're transferring from local trains to those.

good luck!

Thank you Kfire326, you surely soothe me in the midst of my anxiety, consider this is the only interview I have so far. I am practicing for my interview and cross my fingers for the best. How are you doing with your app Kfire?

Hi Guys,
I just wanted to get your opinion on this matter....I recently completed my secondary to Downstate (1/4/11) and was wondering what the chances of getting an interview, or much being accepted to their program??? Reason being, is that I was short on cash and also thought I was already in Upstate, but unfortunately got rejected after an interview-(bastards)!! Anyhow, after my rejection, I immediately sent my secondary at Downstate, now I'm wondering if they will get back to me at all??? Basically, this is my last hope, otherwise its another two years before I can start med school 🙁

Some story. It takes more than "totally screwing up" to get into medical school. If Downstate is still accepting applications and you have good stats then you are not disqualified.

coolkat: it is indeed very late in the cycle, but I suppose that anything can happen if they feel like you'd be an excellent fit for the school. If you are lucky enough to get another interview, perhaps reflect upon why upstate may have rejected you. Do not get complacent with your interviewing skills; you want to be able to seize every possible opportunity, trust me. Best of luck!

Lol. Okay, 1) why does this matter? if you want to send an update, address it to the dean of admissions whose name is made public, or just "SUNY Downstate Admissions Committee." If you're thinking of trying to pull some strings or think you may be coming down with something, and it would be ever so serendipitous that you ended up seeing a doctor who happens to be on the adcom or have some influence - don't. My feeling is that anyone can see right through that and it is more likely to hurt than to help. I'm going through a similar interview process now for residency, and all the same etiquette still applies. And 2) lol never gonna happen, not here, not anywhere. Don't try to hunt it down, and don't ask any admissions office administrative assistants, etc. Word will spread through the admissions office and adcom, which may hurt your candidacy.

The others are right, it is very very very very very late to be sending in a secondary. Nevertheless, if they're still accepting secondaries at all at this time, then that means they'll be willing to go through whatever applications they get. But if you were so sure you were getting into Upstate, figure out what must have gone wrong for you (application, interview, etc) to fix it this time, if you can and if you have the opportunity to do so.

Hi People,

I just wanted to thank you for your words of encouragement and positive messages of hope! Indeed, I will take your advice and revise those areas that were previously deemed weak and improve to the best of my abilitites; perhaps fortune shall smile upon me and grant me another interview!

I will, however, promise to keep you posted with my saga and buy you all a toast of champagne, if in case, I get an interview and accepted into the programe!!!

~Cheers🙂

im curious to know if people have actually received rejection letters😕 or they just do silent rejections and during the summer send the rejection notifications?

I'm curious about such myself. I've not heard much since they said thanks for updating them and added my update to my file.

Last time I applied, which was keep in mind 2 years ago, I was rejected by snail mail in mid december. Like not long after submitting. This time I have yet to hear anything. Now what I don't know is if they just decided to reject everyone not interviewing all at once or they just still considering me. That's what is harder to figure out. I've already been rejected from the other two SUNYs I applied to so that's why it is so puzzling. Furthermore, someone I know told me the last time they applied to downtate they were rejected by Feb.

So now I'm wondering if they reject all at once at the end or they still considering me cuz I'm a grad student and they may look at grad students later or there something else to it.

Don't think it's a post grad student thing...because i'm not post grad and i have yet to hear. This is nerve wrecking!! :scared: I also haven't heard from the other sunys. It's like they all decided to just ignore my application lol ugh 😡 If ANYONE can shed some light on the subject, and knows about someone receiving a rejection letter let us know!!
if you don't mind me asking gujuDoc when were you completed here and at the other sunys? and we're talking about post or pre interview?

Did everyone else with acceptances get a big fat orange envelope with a bunch of the registration/health/housing forms? I also got a blank "acceptance reply" form...It freaked me out for a moment, but then I remembered I have a green checkbox in my checklist.

Also, is anyone considering going to the Research Day on 09 March? I'd go, but I'm OOS and don't want to fly from Cali. I'm very comfortable with Downstate and personally don't feel the need to "shadow a student" before matriculating. 🙂

Got mine today also from Cali, do we have to resend the acceptance form?

That was waht I was worried about...I honestly don't think so, given that they got ours already the first time around. I guess we *could* call them on Tuesday. Although I won't even be here in the country at that time.

Any opinions..or anyone want to call for me? 😛 (I seriously am not in the country for the next two weeks lol)

Wouldn't worry about it. Status page shows if they have received and accepted deposit and acceptance form.

EDIT: p.s. got a packet as well. I am not worried about sending in the form again.

As far as research day... if you're already in then it makes no difference if you come for it or not. If you want to come because you want to see if you can get involved in research early, see what goes on here, maybe try to do some work the summer before med school (please don't do that), then fine. But otherwise there's no point. Come for yourself - don't think anyone will think more or less of you if you come or don't come. If you really don't feel the need to shadow a student before matriculating, then don't. I didn't.

For the record, I'm a Downstate student graduating this year and I didn't even know we had a research day. lol. I'm also completely not into research whatsoever - not bench/basic science research, at least, so that's why, but I can't say I'm surprised. I'm not really the person to ask, but Downstate's biggest research is in neuroscience and memory - it's been in the newspapers, etc, and those researchers are well known in the neuro/memory research community (of which I'm not a part, but still). In addition we have at least one internationally known neuropathologist here too (obv in the neuropathology circles.. others won't know her, of course). There is also molecular bio, genetics, neuro-ophthalmology, and other stuff too, I'm sure. Interested students definitely have opportunities to do work with the Ph.D's here and the MD's that do research too - its just a matter of looking for it and finding the right person and project.

Yep I got my packet in the mail yesterday! verrryyy exciting 😀

I was complete around mid september. don't remember the exact date and too lazy to look it all up.

The first rejection from a SUNY was SUNY Buffalo in snail mail in mid fall. Then from SUNY Upstate in mid December. Got pre interview hold on first of nov at SUNY Upstate and rejected in mid Dec from there same as last time I applied.

last time I applied, however, i got rejected from downstate around the same time. This time I've yet to hear.

OoooOhhh i see..hmm well i guess we're in the same boat for downstate..let's hope that this somehow ends up in some good news...fingers crossed for the both of us!

Thanks a lot Kfire for your information! It's reallly appreciated--I will likely attend this school if no other options in my state open up for me; I felt "at home" and not "out of place" when I was at Downstate..(and I'm an easygoing type of guy)..so I see no reason to not like it!

Has anyone received a post initial review checklist because I submitted the materials and I was just wondering if this is just a way to by time instead of just rejecting me. Has anyone gotten an interview after submitting the information?

I felt really at home too this school was always my top choice

Which information? Did they specifically request information from you?

Some of us had written updates on our own and we now have a "post-initial review checklist" so just wondering what is on your checklist or if you were prompted to submit items.

Thanks.

I was asked to submit my fall grades after being marked complete. Not sure what this meant for my application, but I would imagine that it means that they are at least interested in my file.
I have not heard back from Downstate as of yet... Has anyone who had to submit fall grades gotten an interview or rejection yet?

Hey guys,

So I was reviewing the yellow "financing your education 2011-2012" sheet enclosed in the second acceptance packet sent out, and I had a question about the procedure.

I know it says the first step is to file the FAFSA, which I just did, but it also says "In addition to completing the FAFSA, you must also complete the Downstate Application for Institutional Aid" (if you're interested in a Downstate Scholarship/Grant). Do you guys know if we should do that now, ie: prior to receiving the financial aid award letter?

Are there any current students that can comment on when we will receive student ID numbers and access to Downstate email? My guess is later in the year, closer to matriculation? It makes the Downstate-based Financial Aid forms a pain, when writing "New Admit-No ID # yet) haha.

I was asked to.submit more.info about non medical community service and was given interview soon after I sent it in so I wouldn't be worried about it

Did anyone locate the facebook created for the c/o 2015 that was mentioned in the packet? I searched for it and nothing came up...

Good point. Couldn't find it either! (or any of the other classes), so I though that was strange. They've come up in previous searches I've done.

Hi Guys,
Does anyone know (or have a rough idea) on the number of people that have decided on attending Downstate? Or conversely, the number of seats that might still available??? Approximately, when does the class become full? --Thanks.

I have a question regarding establishing in-state residency for tuition purposes at SUNY Downstate.

At Downstate, the Student Handbook says that the petition for a change in residency classification is due six weeks prior to registration deadline. That is, if the registration deadline is mid-August, then the residency classification change paperwork is all due by early July. If it due by July, when should I start renting an apartment so that I would have a full 12 months worth of rent checks/leasing paperwork?" My calculations show that the latest we should start a lease would be early July (ie: 01 July 11 to petition a change for M2 billing). Maybe I'm just tired and not thinking straight, but if I signed a lease beginning 01 July 11, then by 01 July 12 (when I need to start getting all that paperwork together), I should have the full 12 months worth of paperwork?

I want to make sure I get the right "date" down so I can more or less start thinking about when I need to move into an apartment in NYC; if I move in too late, I can't correctly claim residency, and if I move in too early, I may have nothing to really do for a month and a half, haha.

Thanks in advance! Maybe someone who's actually done this before can chime in.

I've been stuck on "initial review" for a while now. This is my second year applying, and last year I bumped to the alternate list in the spring after interviewing in Feb '10. I've had my secondary completed since 8/31/10.

Anyone have any advice/information? Is this a silent rejection? Just is kind of weird.

Phew - I was a little worried too. It just seemed weird since they were in such frequent email contact through the spring and over the summer (not to mention all the paperwork they had me fill out).

I'm trying to stay optimistic though, and say to myself that maybe they are waiting to interview me till later in the season as they already know they liked me from last year - My interview lasted around 2 hours it was a pretty great conversation and my application hasn't changed drastically. Maybe...

Yea I was asked to sent in some more information and...Has anyone been asked to do this?
I was asked to give them more information regarding the hourly committment of my work activities section of the primary application. A few days after I sent that back in I was given an interview, so they are probably ready to review your application and need more information before they come to a decision.
