Quick question - I decided to write the optional essay and discuss my childhood growing up on an organic midwestern farm and how it has affected my character and health values. I also discussed my motivation to return to the Boston area after attending boarding school there. Do you all think this would be helpful? These things didn't fit into my AMCAS application but I felt that my farming background is an important aspect of who I am.

Thanks for the advice!!

why are you so curious about a school to which you allegedly haven't applied?

Many classmates and friends applied here and some made it past the 3 week mark, but none have received the 30 day e-mail. It's irking me as to whether I should apply or not. $110 isn't exactly chump change for a college student.

Ouch, out of the running. 37R, 3.8 cGPA, 3.72 sGPA. Cali applicant.

Good luck to everyone else!

This is my 31st day, still no email since being complete.

You might want to send them an email to check. I got my application complete email from BU about 4 days after I submitted the secondary app.

LOL and OF COURSE I read your post wrongly. If you're 31 days into it then you seem to be on the right track!! Good luck! =D

 That's alright. I'm merely pointing out that the 30-day email does not seem to be coming out this year, or maybe it'll be later than last year.

I don't really understand how BU is shutting out all these 3.9/38 kids. I am sure they are also rejecting tons of 3.0/30 kids...so who are they interviewing??

probably a sign that they're going well beyond the numbers and looking for applicants with particular experiences/goals/personalities/etc...

Just realized that I wrote "BCMP" instead of "BCPM" in my optional essay about three times---> FAIL 🙂

In a perfect world, BCMP could stand for basic core medical prerequisite.😀 Who knows, maybe they will see it that way.

No, but seriously, does anyone think that this warrants a quick note to admissions? That I actually do know that I made a mistake?

Thanks

Yes, you should contact them and apologize for being a bit of a tool for referencing your GPA so many times in your optional essay. 😀

Maybe this is why people with 3.9 and 37 MCAT scores get rejected pre-interview ...

You can't really be serious about this, right? Leave it alone. Bugging them about something that isn't an issue will only have the potential of red-flagging your application. (And just to be clear... red flag = bad)

Yea, I was actually explaining a downward trend in GPA - so not being a tool.

Also, I thought that humbling admitting to your mistakes is a quality they would want in a med student. Unless you plan on covering up/ignoring your mistakes as a physician?

On hold for letters not being signed. One prof in hong kong and one who knows where... Any one heard of someone calling in and them making an exception?

So I got the complete email from BU on July 8th. But my letters section say the letters were not uploaded until July 18th. Was I actually complete July 18th then?

Omg just got the 30 day email!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yesssssss

Dear asrikrishnan,

It has been 30 days since we sent you a notice indicating that your application was complete and had been referred to our Committee on Admissions for review. While our Committee is accustomed to reviewing a very large volume of applications, this year we have seen an unprecedented number of applications that have been completed early in the cycle. It appears that we will be able to interview only about 10% of our applicants this year, so these reviews are quite challenging. As a result, we are running several weeks behind.

I regret the fact that we have not been able to take action on your application as yet, but I want to assure you that we are moving as quickly as we can and that there will be no penalty for the delay in our processing. Applicants who are selected for interview are invited in chronological order by date of application completion, not by date of review. If our Committee on Admissions concludes that we can invite you for an interview and campus visit, we will get it done!

Please accept our apology for any inconvenience caused by our extended review of your file. We expect to complete our evaluation quite soon, and wish you success with all your applications.

Sincerely,

Robert A. Witzburg, M.D.
Associate Dean and Director of Admissions
Boston University School of Medicine

I just received the 30 day email from BU. What now?

EDIT: It's the exact email as last year.

Anyone know how long between 30-day email and interview invites is typical?

According to last year's thread it took almost a month for the interviews to start coming in after the 30 day email.

for the prerequisite grid.. does anyone know if you have to elaborate what specific courses you took for humanities, biology, etc under explanations?

how much free time do people have at bu? any time to pursue non-medically related interests such as music? thanks!

You will be able to pursue other interests throughout med school, but maybe less so during your third year.

Ouch, rejected three weeks after submitting the secondary. 3.8/39R

Were you complete as soon as you submitted?

I'm expecting mine next week or something in that case.

Got the 30-day email today!

Submitted 6/24, complete email 6/29. Exactly 30 days haha!

30 day email here as well. 3.82 cGPA / 3.93 sGPA / 31R (11/10/10).

sorry if this is an annoying question, but how many of you 30-day email recipients write the optional essay??

and congrats to making it past the first hurdle!

I did not write anything.

Didn't write the optional essay. I do however think that each case is different and that this is not a reason we got or didn't get the 30 day email.

I am a "late" applicant. Submitted my primary to AMCAS on 7/29, received secondary email from BU 7/30. They also asked for an official letter from my home university explaining my Institutional Action. However, my school has expunged any record of this. But I still have to have them send a letter stating they expunge records after graduation, my secondary will not be complete until this letter is received. They said they do NOT want this letter sent through AMCAS. Thus, if any other school asks for it I will have to call my home university each time to send it directly to the school.

I figured this information will help anyone in a similar situation

complete on 7/14, still no news.... is this a good sign?

I'm a few days before you, and as far as I can tell, BU rejected guys right up until the 30 day email, so we have to tough it out for a bit longer.

... and the waiting game resumes. :luck::luck:

BU gets like the 2nd highest number of applicants. They reject the people with the killer stats just like the lower tier programs would. They know those applicants can probably get accepted elsewhere.

So cruel, especially since I've been seeing other people with better numbers get a speedy rejection after submitting their secondary.

Complete on 7/11 and haven't heard anything. It seems like that's a good sign but it's hard to be optimistic about NOT hearing anything.
Kinda feels like having a guillotine ready over my neck and waiting for a pardon.

so they ask in that one section would you be interested in attending med skool after college, what happens if you are a re-applicant? I was interesting in going after college but obviously this is my second year?

i find it ironic how we are all hoping we don't hear anything lol

...pretty cruel on BU's part lol

Is that 30 day email real or just a myth? I have been complete for 25 days with 3.64 and 33M from CA. Seeing people with crazy high stats get rejected is very discouraging.
