I am probably going to attend MCW starting next fall. I was looking at the cost of attendance and it looks like they only factor in $470 a year for health insurance. It says something about how this doesn't include purchasing a healthcare plan so I am guessing the $470 is for deductibles and co-pays, etc.

Do you think they would allow me to increase my cost of attendance to cover purchasing a healthcare plan? I'm under the impression that the highest amount of student loans you can get for a year is the cost of attendance. If that's the case I won't be able to afford my health insurance (I am not on my parents plan). It's not a fantastic plan but it definitely costs more that $500 a year.

Can any current medical students weigh in on this? I'm concerned that I'll have to cut costs in other areas (like housing and food) to pay for insurance.

See this: http://www.mcw.edu/FileLibrary/Groups/AcademicAffairs/FinancialAid/CANANDCANNOTCOVER.pdf. Since health insurance is mandatory you won't have a problem (provided your other costs are within reason).

Does anybody know when MCW interview season is officially over? I've been in the pool since September, and my fingers are really wrinkly. The other 19 schools I applied to have all decided whether to interview or reject me by now, and I just have this one school that still can't decide what to do with me.

Unless they've changed it for next year, (or I misunderstood something) the only options for insurance are to be covered on your parents'/spouse's or the school's. They will add the cost of the school's insurance to your allowed loans. Then you never even see that money or a bill for the insurance, the school just pays it for you.

thanks! I was really worried, but if I can have coverage through the school that is better than nothing.

anyone who interviewed 3/2 get an acceptance? Im curious as to what "very few spots" actually meant.

They told me via telephone that interviews will run through the last week in April or the first week in May, depending on yield.

Hi I'm from California and was accepted to MCW from the 3/2 interview date. Anyone here also from Cali that will be bringing their car with them? I'm curious if most Californians/ West Coasters will be driving it or using a delivery service?

I'm likely going in the opposite direction with my car and looked into this (decided not to ship, but I have a particular scenario where I'll be stopping for several days halfway there). Shipping it is expensive but not ridiculously expensive; consider towing it if you need a Uhaul.

I'm wondering with gas prices the way they are, if the costs might be equivalent. Who knows how high gas might be during the summer (yikes), but I'm guessing that shipping fees would also increase concurrently. Hmmm... maybe driving really is the best option!

I'm giving up my spot at MCW so I hope it goes to you. I feel your pain but don't give up. Last year I had three waitlists out of four interviews and didn't get in. This year I have 4 acceptances and 3 waitlists. It's a little bit of a game but it really does work out for the best. I know how frustrating the wait can be but it happens for a reason. Good luck!
Dear Sydloy,
first, congratulations on your acceptances! 4 acceptances is a lot! I applied last summer as a college junior but I realized that I was probably rushing myself. I am waitlisted for MCW and I just scheduled an interview april 6th. If things don't work out this year, I'm definitely gonna get myself ready to apply next summer. I know as a reapplicant, they don't want to see you throwing in the same application for the second time. since you did so well this year, could you please give me some advice on what you did differently to improve your application this year?
Thank you very much!!

does anyone know exactly what "waitlist interview" means?
i was placed on the waitlist and got an interview invite last week. I just scheduled for an interview april 6th. when mcw gives out interview to waitlist people, does it mean they have spots open that they want to fill with the waitlist interviewee, or does it mean that they don't yet have spots open but they just want to interview us in case if spots become available later?
also, does anyone know the turnaround days to hear back from them after an interview? thx alot!

You'll be interviewing for a spot on the waitlist, not directly for a seat in the class.

Turnaround is almost always one week; you should hear back by the Friday after you interview.

Does anybody know where to find the match list for recent years here?

i dont think this interview invite for the waitlist means you are automatically on the waiting list. as with any other interview day some people will get rejected, some will get waitlisted, the only difference for these last two interview days is that there are no open spots left in the class, so no one will be accepted outright.

- oops I meant this to be a reply to baidagua127 not to you Posthaste

Does anybody know where to find the match list for recent years here?

Last year's list is at the bottom right corner of this webpage:

http://www.mcw.edu/medicalschool.htm

They just sent out this year's list. At first glance it seems like there may be more "competitive" specialties represented but as with any school, it likely doesn't change too much year-to-year.

If our secondary application site user id is no longer active is that a silent rejection? I am waiting for a decision pre interview and just tried logging in, but got that message. :/.

I just posted a summary of the 2012 one in allo.

http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?p=12292366#post12292366

Note that match lists really are more a summary of the personal preference of the graduating class. This year the most popular specialty was anesthesia, mostly because we have an awesome anesthesia department that we all have to do a rotation in during M3 year. In the past our most popular specialty has also often been peds or IM.

Thanks for the response. It has been a rough cycle for me...good luck to the rest of you.

for those of you guys who interviewed at MCW, are there any typical or weird questions that we have to pay attention to? Thanks alot alot alot!!!!!!!

Just try to be yourself. Obviously, be prepared for the "typical" questions.

I had a very good impression of the school.

Anybody else have concerns about the new curriculum starting this year? Most schools are moving towards new things, and some have really struggled during the first few years of implementation. Thoughts?

I haven't reviewed the curriculum changes since my interview, which was in October, but I don't remember seeing anything that I thought could be problematic. I'm very interested though to hear what you're specifically concerned about. Please share.

I don't think there are any specifics that I'm nervous about, more just the fact that it's new and unproven. I know the pilot program has been going on for a couple of years, but that was with very small sample size.

Anyone still waiting to hear anything back from MCW??? I can still log into the Secondary Application, and everytime I call they say my application is still processing. I guess no news is good news sometimes though.

Well, it probably means you're still in the running for a late wait list interview. It's not the best place to be, but also certainly not the worst!

+1

I'd like to have a shot at this school but at the same time I hate being strung along for over half a year...

hey go to articles and interviews at the top of the page, interview feedback, and find the school. Those are what I used. My interviews seemed pretty typical though...no crazy questions. Good luck.

can anyone who has been through the MCW interview please tell me about how exactly the day goes? Like what time do you need to get there, where to go first, where to place your luggage...etc??? I'm interviewing on April 6th, and I'm really really confused... I haven't booked my hotel yet cuz I'm debating whether to bring my luggage with in on the interview day and have the shuttle send me back to the airport in the afternoon or should I go back to the hotel and stay for 1 more night then go to the airport on my own the next day. I'm also trying to save money as well. If I do let the shuttle send me to the airport, I can save like $100 of hotel and taxi $$. my flight is in the morning of the next day, but I don't mind staying at the airport overnight.

thx alot :luck:

bring your luggage with you -- there is a coat room where you can leave stuff, and my recollection is that it is either monitored or locked during the day. no point in staying another night if you don't have to.

has anyone written a letter on intent for mcw? i'm interviewing on april 6th and wanted to send in a letter of intent along with my application update but I don't really know the format, length or whom I should address to on the letter. does anyone know how the letter of intent should go? like how long it should be, what should I say in it, to whom it should address? also, does anyone know about possible links that gives advice on such letters?
thanks so so so much! :luck:

basically want to address your fit at the school, where it rates for you, what things pique your interest, hint that you'll definitely matriculate if accepted. should be like 2 para. max IMO

thx alot! that's great help! do you kno who we should address the letter to? like to the admission officer? or someone else?

thx alot!!

Did you look at MCW's website: http://www.mcw.edu/medicalschool/Interviewing.htm

Hello everyone

For those who've been accepted, have you turned in all the financial aid paperwork? I've done my fafsa but there is no deadline for the FAA and additional forms.

Thanks

Yeah. Somewhere on a form or web page it mentioned that aid awards start going out in March. I figured it was a good idea to get stuff in early since MCW isn't known for having an excess of institutional aid.
