Has anyone received an II recently?

Yes, like a day or two ago. I'm trying to decide whether or not to attend and which date to pick. Which is to say, I really like Northwestern, and I'm way excited by the invite, but their financial packages don't seem to stand up to other institutions. What would you guys do if you'd gotten into, say, UMich, Vandy, and Sinai--would you attend NW?

When did you submit your secondary?

Lol, nicely done! I was checking internet on my kindle and watching old southpark on Netflix. No point in getting stressed at this point, won't help anything
:hardy::hardy::hardy::hardy::hardy::hardy:

Considering I am in sweatpants, sitting in a study carrel in the basement of a library, eating my roommate's left over birthday cake that I smuggled in...it looks like the pity party is in full swing

If it makes you guys feel better...I interviewed around the middle of october and didn't hear anything... Is this a consensus established rejection or more neurotic speculation haha? Also, does Northwestern use silent rejections or do they send you an e-mail rejecting you?
Mid-Oct interview here as well.

I think they would notify you of a rejection, deferral or acceptance over email when they have a decision. Others who have received decisions already can confirm this.

FYI, according to US News, they accepted 67% of interviewees for the time period in which that data was collected. This is consistent with what they have said, which is that they accept 50% of interviews. That means there is a decent amount of waitlist movement also. Odds aren't bad compared to other places for those who are interviewing.

Don't lost hope!
Has anyone heard thus far got a rejection? I was afriad/speculating all the accepted/deferred decisions are out, and all the rejections are going to be sent in one batch later on, thus not hearing anything=rejecting, purely conjecture tho, due mostly to the fact no one has posted a rejection. Someone prove me wrong, please...?:luck::xf:

This makes sense to me as well. Hopefully, our logic is flawed.

Definitely not within driving distance. 😛

Congrats Percy! Around when were you complete?

My best estimate is 2 to 2.5 months, but I haven't really been keeping track.

Still undecided, though. Any more input?

I am still waiting and hoping for interview invite. Will it help sending an update letter at this time?

If you're really into the PBL thing, then you might want to go. They also have a relatively high percentage of admission after interview.

Percy, Do you think you will like the area? It is a wonderful location. They are also changing the curriculum for our year, and I really like the new changes. I was also really impressed by the facilities.

However, it seems like you have had some interviews at some awesome places already (and some acceptances, too), so if northwestern is not your top choice (and it doesnt seems like it is), don't go! If you have a gf with whom you wanna end up with, then I would go, so that you can increase your chances of ending up with her, but that's about the only reason I can think of.

Thanks for the input, you guys! I'm going to do my due diligence and read up a little more on the school before making any decisions. Honestly, I know very little about NW (other than its location, and that it's supposed to be pretty awesome). That said, I did attend another interview with little knowledge/expectations and absolutely loved the school, so you never know, I guess. Don't know that I have a "top choice" (isn't that just a recipe for heartbreak in this process?); just trying to keep an open mind (without going broke, haha). And unfortunately, at this point it looks like my bf and I are going to end up in completely different states/regions, so that's not factoring so much into my decision (for better or worse). Where's a Magic 8 ball when you need one??

Would you go to NW over UMich? From what I understand, UMich has better facility, higher ranking, and more money for scholarship. NW isn't known to be generous with financial aid. If I was already in UMich, I would prob pass NW unless there is some compelling reason to be in Chicago. But then again, more choices don't hurt, I just wish I had gotten my acceptance earlier before wasting $300 to interview at a school I won't go to at this pt.

11/3 was the big day for decisions of all sorts last week, which was a thursday so i speculate that if we were to here anything this week it may follow that pattern resulting in some decisions this thursday.

Last year people seemed to hear back on some random days... roughly speaking, it seems that people who interviewed up until ~10/15 heard back on 11/11 (Thurs). People who interviewed up until ~10/22 heard back on 11/15 (Mon). People who interviewed up until ~11/3 heard back 11/23 (Tues), etc. This year, it seems that people who interviewed as late as up to 10/19 heard back 11/3 (Thurs)?? So maybe we're not too far from hearing back...

hi everyone!

I'm super sorry if someone answered this already but I have not found it yet.

Has anyone sent an *in area email*. I got an interview at U chicago and I'm coming all the way from Vancouver so I'd like to save the $.

If you have any advice?

thanks so much 😳😳

Anyone know when Northwestern starts sending out rejections (pre interview?)

I sent them an email telling them I'd be in Chicago, expressing my interest in Northwestern and, if they were planning to interview me, blah blah blah...

They wrote back fairly quickly that they hadn't made any decisions about my application, so they can't coordinate anything.

I'd say it's worth a try.

Does anyone know much about the dual degree programs and their competitiveness at Northwestern? I think it's really cool that you could do them in 4 yrs, but I did hear that the MD/MPH was a little weak (maybe just a rumor?). Well anyways, just really excited about northwestern and thinking about it a lot these days!

can anyone comment on the LGBT friendliness of the school? I found the AMSA LGBT Residency/Med School Directory of Feinberg somewhat disheartening (wouldn't let me copy the link). I LOVE the school though - top choice.

I was really hoping more acceptances would come out this week...

Look into their Reach OUT program. They seem to actively recruit LGBT students (hopefully with some degree of success), and I'm sure they would be happy to address your pressing questions as they have mine. Best of luck.

that is disturbing, a school shouldn't decrease standards for you just because you have a different sexual orientation. that is worse the affirmative action.

Where did anyone mention decreasing standards? I think you are making some poor assumptions and coming off crass. Did you stop and think about certain environments could be perceived as more or less hospitable for lbgt students, regardless of academics? And how talented students would make decisions about med school based on this and why med schools would care.

I am sorry to tell you this, but you come off as a total bigoted ass@#@#%$% by saying things like this. The previous posting did not mention anything, not even a single thing about decreasing standards for LGBTQ people.

Quite honestly, I do not even know how you could or would want to practice medicine with that kind of mentality.

I feel sorry for your future patients, because quite frankly, it shows your true character when you say things like that.

I've been complete and under review here since Aug 10th and no interview invite. Is this a silent rejection?

Have some hope! There are people who interview in late February last application cycle and got in. I think they're doing their best(also taking their time) in finding which applicants will suit their FSM learning environment..so this is probably the reason why post-interview acceptance is higher than at other schools.

Also for other peoples' reference, they asked that sending in a letter of update/intent pre-interview be done over email. And they told me it should be because of an update, not solely a "I love you" letter. Besides we probably explained that last part in the first essay of the secondary =p

Thanks - hopefully this proves to be true. I have sent them some 'real' updates, which I hope helps.

SDN has really sapped any energy I used to have to respond to posts like this.

Sorry,

Did not mean to be "bigoted". I was responding to the poster who wrote that the school "actively seeks to recruit lgbt students". What I meant was that sex/race should simply NOT be any part of the admissions process. Committee should be blind to race/sex/orientation/political beliefs. From that quote I got the impression that schools seek lgbt students especially so that they could increase their diversity which I think is stupid.

In that same regard I do believe that affirmative action is not a great system. It essentially stereotypes people based on race. Without any added info. There are plenty of "minorities" who are applying from rich families just as there are plenty of "white males" applying from tough backgrounds. In the end, I believe that if you believe in freedom/equality you cannot justify affirmative action

Finally, you are absolutely wrong to say "sorry for my patients" ... I can't believe that my belief in equality which is based on that fact that one's profession life is not defined by race/sex/orientation can somehow affect my ability to care for the ill.

Hey everyone,

Been complete since July 12. No word yet. Since AMCAS I have been offered a scholarship on a D-1 track and field team and started training (I know... senior year before med school- maybe not my most intelligent decision but track is my passion and I finally have time). I know the school says it would prefer if no updates are sent prior to an interview invite; but I feel that this might change my application from the "maybe" to the "interview" pile. (I'm a 4.0 / 32R)

You think I should send an update or just assume that after 4 months I'm pretty much out of luck haha. Thanks!

In regards to the Reach OUT program, when I interviewed, I participated in it and I think that your sexual orientation plays a large role in which school you choose and that its actually a valid concern.

Not all areas of the US are particularly welcoming to the LGBT community and its nice to know that NW as an institution is supportive and so are certain areas of the surrounding Chicago community. If they want to use that to recruit, I feel its entirely valid. It's like using the fact that they're in a large city or next to the lake. All schools do this - talking about student life and the areas around the campus.

If non-academic factors truly didn't play a role, all of our interviews could be phone or skype interviews. There'd be no need to visit the campus.

heyy congrats to everyone who has already received interview invites and good luck to those still waiting!! i have my interview in a few weeks, and i was just wondering if you have any tips for me?? =D

I have the same question! I've complete for several month, and still no news. Are they just holding our application until they see all the applications they will get?

i know this has been asked a bazillion times, but no one seems to be answering it. I looked on the Northwestern website, and I can't find anything. Anyone know if Northwestern sends pre-interview rejections? Any input from a current student would be much appreciated. I think there are a lot of people on this forum that would appreciate a response to this question. Thanks in advance! 🙂

it does say that all applications are in consideration through february... so as an inference from other schools that use similar language, we won't know about rejections until later.

Again, you sound very ignorant in regards to current numbers of physicians representing underrepresented minorities in medicine and how medicine should be for a nation like the US. And yes, in case you did not know, LGBTQ people are underrepresented in medicine. You say, "sex/race should simply NOT be part of any admission process." I wonder how medicine should look in the world you envision, because as far as I know, if we go by those standards, I hardly believe we would have many underrepresented minorities in medical schools, which in my opinion bring a lot more to a class.

I agree with you that affirmative action is not the best system, but if it did not exist, some underserved populations would be greatly struggling with a shortage of physicians. Some system is better than no system at all. I believe in affirmative action, especially when it takes into consideration socio-economical factors into account. In this way, you guarantee every race an equal chance i.e. white male who grew up poor, African-American who had both doctor or lawyer parents or whatever professional affluent parents.

Finally, you are absolutely wrong to say "sorry for my patients" ... I can't believe that my belief in equality which is based on that fact that one's profession life is not defined by race/sex/orientation can somehow affect my ability to care for the ill.

This one I still hold. The reason why, if all this that you have written is how you think of your possible future medical school peers, I can not imagine what you would say about an uninsured patient from a racial minority. Just a thought...

From a current student. I have no idea. No news is just that, no news. As should be your standpoint with the rest of your applications. I know it's impossible to not read into the silence, but until you hear something concrete from a reputable source, don't bank on your application going one way or another.

I hope this is some encouragement for everyone waiting. I submitted my secondary on 8/2 and I finally got an interview invite today!!
