I interviewed in February and was put in hold status, I didn't hear back until the second week of may, when they gave me an acceptance with a 1/2 scholarship (I think a lot of people were given scholarships, but I have no idea) so don't over worry about it.

As far as what I thought of the school, originally I applied thinking it would be a safety, being a new school, and by the time I was offered an interview, I had already been accepted into Wayne (my first choice), so the only reason I actually went to the interview was because I literally live 10 minutes away and thought it would be good experience. Though I was conscious of the fact that they were trying to sell the school to us (in contrast to Georgetown, where they sat down and told us they liked us all, told us all of the faults and strengths of the school candidly, and told us that it was up to us to decide whether they were the school for us), but I was very impressed by the staff, the curriculum ideas they had, and Beaumont Royal Oak. By the end of the day, I wasn't so sure what I'd do if I was accepted because the school does seem great.

For people who need help deciding, to sum up my thoughts on the school, here are the pro's and cons:

Pro:

-The new medical school facilities were really nice
-The faculty seemed great (Dr. Bee especially, she's just an awesome person and an even better instructor - I briefly audited her anatomy class)
-Beaumont Royal Oak is an amazing hospital, rivaling U of M's hospital in many regards, plenty of research opportunities, and being exclusive is a great in for future residency opportunities
-Being a small class, I'm sure there is great attention towards the students
-Being in the first (or second for you guys) class, it is very much in the school's interest to have you set a standard of greatness, so they'll work hard to have you do great
-The campus is very pretty, as is the surrounding area. Anyone interviewing the next few weeks really should check out the Dodge Mansion which is on campus to check out the beautiful leaves

Con:

-For you guys, the main reason I didn't go to OU won't be as big of a deal, because by the time you guys attend, the curriculum will be more finalized, and you'll have second years to look up to for advice. Still though, with no record for Step 1 scores, or match rates, it is still very unnerving. Also, even though the curriculum is more established, I would be surprised if there still weren't plenty of tweaks to be made
-Cost (which for me was a pro because of the scholarship) if you're in state
-Sharing the main med school building with undergrads was a huge turn off
-the same can be said for not having a dedicated library
-Being new, the student organized community outreach was obviously nonexistent
-Unless you live in Royal Oak, there really isn't much going on locally. The area is pretty, and there are a few ok bars, but Rochester is pretty boring.

There's probably more, that I just don't remember anymore. I'm actually very curious to hear from people who did decide to go to OUWB though, and what their thoughts of the school are, as actual students.

And because you guys (and I as well when I was applying) like stats for reference, I applied while finishing up my BS in bio, had a 3.92 GPA, 34 MCAT, and otherwise the regular volunteering, honor society officer, research type stuff. Oh, and I think it's worth mentioning, from what I seemed to glean from the whole application/interview process, I really think OU isn't a numbers school, and that they carefully choose those they interview/accept for people who will want to go to the school, and who will fit the school. I'm also curious to know how many non traditionals they will have, because they seemed pretty open to them.

Thanks for your candid insight!

On a side note, OUWB probably has the most navigable website for any medical school. Very user friendly.

I just want to say, OUWBSOM has the most professional staff I've encountered on my medical school interview journey. Honestly, the way this staff carries itself is in the utmost professional manner with integrity and humility. I think other staffs were too loose and unprofessional towards students and I can only imagine what happens behind closed doors; however, I am sure that Oakland's staff is focused and fully dedicated to producing a medical school with an esteemed name and dignified for their professionalism and leadership towards the community they care for.

Edit: Dr. Bobby Folberg is a consummate professional and definitely one of the main reasons why this school will be successful in the future.
Oh yeah, and the students are the most intelligent, hard working, and focused individuals I can imagine and I know there's a reason this school has chosen such stellar academic all-stars.

Club Luna is definitely a cool place to chill if you are in the Royal Oak area, just sayin'.

I could be wrong in the outlook I had, but, like I said, I felt that through the whole interview process, we were being sold on the program. Don't get me wrong, the staff did seem great, and the school really did impress me, but I felt like I was at a lunch with a time share rep trying to get me to buy. Heh, my favorite thing about the profs I've had so far at Wayne has been how willing they are to joke (telling us to look up "swallowing movies" on google in the notes, with a warning to put the content filter on ).

Also, when you get to medical school, even though you shouldn't be surprised at how smart everyone is because they all obviously got in, but you will be. It really is cool to have classmates who say, graduated from a top 10 law school and prosecuted khmer rouge members for war crimes in Cambodia before deciding to practice medicine, or engineered missiles for a huge military contractor before deciding they couldn't contribute to death and wanted to save lives. Those are just two of 300, and while many of them don't have such remarkable stories (people like me), everyone is extremely smart, and extremely nice. I imagine that's the experience across all US medical schools, because it is just that competitive to get in.

I thought I said that Royal Oak is great, but if I didn't, then it is 😀. I only meant to say that if you want to live right next to campus, Rochester is pretty boring. It's nice, I live in Rochester Hills, but for people who want a good night life, it isn't the town. Downtown, personally, I like Rochester Mills, but a lot of people go to Mr. Bee's, and they have that douchie club/bar fuse. If you're someone who likes outdoors though, there are great parks all over, and some great biking/hiking trails as well. The Clinton River also has some awesome secluded beaches if you're willing to hunt them out (though I wouldn't recommend swimming in the river) which are great for studying outside, or bonfires with friends.

My posts were not aimed at you what-so-ever and if they were I would have quoted you.

That being said, Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine's faculty, especially Dean Dr. Robert Folberg are some of the most professional human beings I have ever encountered. No shots at Wayne, I think Wayne is a fine institution, but they don't have a Bobby Folberg and they don't have a strong connection with Club Luna. That's all I'm saying.

Heh, no worries, mine weren't shots back as much as a very successful attempt to procrastinate 😀

my interview's coming up, anyone wanna share a cab from DTW?

also, can i get free internet on oakland campus via wifi? or maybe i should just try to log into a computer at the library? I'm staying at Homestead and they actually charge per day for internet in your suite.

If you can get a student to log on for you, you can get online... otherwise there's no guest network access [that I know of].

Ah! The number of interview invites jumped from 218 to 264 out of 420 this morning!! Nothing in my inbox or on my status page... any of you have any luck?

Complete here on 8/14 and no news at all! Silly Oakland, what are you doing with my application? 🙄

Could be wishful thinking but maybe they haven't sent out the invites yet?

Complete end of august and no news either

Interview invite! OOS, high 30s MCAT, 3.75 GPA, complete like 3 weeks ago. :luck:

Thanks! Lol I've never been anywhere newt Detroit so I'm curious to see it. I've heard not to expect too much lol. I've been getting lots of love from the new schools!

Never been to Detroit prior to this week. But I enjoyed my time in the Detroit metro area the last couple of days. Detroit is a blue collar city, it's people are straight shooters, and genuinely warm and friendly.

Metro Detroit is pretty diverse, with a surprising variety of racial/ethnic as well as socioeconomic diversity, often with vast differences very close together. Pontiac for instance has a median household income of something like $32K, a few minutes away Troy has a median household income of something like $84K. Birmingham is supposed to be one of the best school systems in the nation, Detroit, only 7 miles south, has possibly the worst school system in the nation. I think, for medical students, this sort of environment is great, because it allows for a wealth of diversity in terms of perspectives, experiences, and opportunities. You can live in a nice area, and still have very real opportunities to help people who are truly in need.

Just dont make the mistake i made....When coming from the airport to my hotel near campus the exit for the I-75 has 2 exits..A and B...One takes you north and one takes you through some sketchy areas...I took the sketchy areas one and it was midnight and I was in a bright yellow rental car....

The drive up between detroit and the school was actually really nice after you got out of the city...especially from an AZ native who knows all you see here is desert and more desert

lol i think i know where you ended up going....if you're using I-94 east to get to I-75 north, there will be a sign that says "I-75 Flint Toledo 1/2 mile ahead" Please NOTE: it is NOT 1/2 mile a head....more like 1/8 mile so I guess I can see how someone may have missed that exit.

also, if you're leaving the airport during peak traffic hours then it's probably best you use M-39 up to M-10 and then Telegraph up to Sq. Lk and to 75...you'll get traffic either way, but def less traffic this way then I-94/I-75 all the way up.

good luck!

Thanks for all the advice guys. It sounds like a cool place, I like really heterogeneous areas with really different neighborhoods. Just makes for an interesting feel.

Why would schools send out acceptances right now lol? They just have to wait like 6-9 more hours till they're not breaking traffic rules!

ya isnt that illegal?

Do we expect OUWB acceptances this weekend or on Monday?

They were pretty ambiguous about it at my interview day... I wouldn't expect anything til Monday though. At the very least, keep your phone on you and check email regularly, but certainly don't fret if you don't get any updates until Monday.

:luck: :luck:

Hey how many people heard today? I'm still hoping!

Hey how many people heard today? I'm still hoping!

I got the call about an hour and a half ago! I probably sounded ridiculous on the phone since I was so excited and shaky!

Good luck! Hopefully you'll hear from them by tomorrow.

I missed a call from a 248 area code today and my phone voice mail was full....I interviewed in late September so I thought they weren't going to get to our date. If someone wants to PM me the phone number that called them, I really want to know because I'm sort of in ultimate disbelief right now haha....

The call was defs an acceptance! Accepted today at 5pm EST by phone. Feels good to have some confirmation/validation! Good luck to the rest of you! 👍

Missed a call from OUWB yesterday - haven't been able to get ahold of them again yet. Based on the experience of others I'm guessing this is good news, but I would like confirmation :xf:

Has anyone who didnt hear yesterday called to find out their status today?

I haven't called them. I interviewed on 9/23, so I don't know if they have had enough time to go over everything (I think they should have 😀). Hoping to hear something soon...like NOW!

Ack! You accepted people need to tell us all when you interviewed! I interviewed...sometime in August u think, and I need some good news. I know codeblu interviewed sometime in Sept right?
