OMG OMG I received an interview invite today - my first of the cycle, just when i was starting to feel depressed for not getting any interviews. I am sooo happy. I love you Oakland... For anyone curious I was complete on Aug 23.

Boo - looks like I got passed over - interviewed 9/20 ish... boo.

Did you get waitlisted or outright rejected? It looks like they should be up to my interview day real soon (9/23).

Neither, but at this point, with accepts going to people who interviewed later than me, no news is probably bad news... It suggests pretty strongly that I am not going to be in the first round of acceptances, and now im stuck hoping for a favorable turn of events when they get around to looking at my file again later.

Yea that is exactly how I feel at all the schools that I have not heard anything from since the end of July. I am also getting impatient and would like to hear from the schools that I have interviewed at already. Only need one acceptance and it would be nice to hear from Oakland.

hey all we are still very early in the process. This could drag out until the spring so keep the spirits high. If you don't get accepted here, there are other places and options.

Those who got an interview just be grateful for that because many people are still waiting for their first II.

Trust me, I know how nerve wracking it is waiting on these decisions but lets just practice our patience because well its no fun getting all worked up 🙂

No news is good news. I am by no means saying to take my advice/reasoning into account, but at least entertain this...

They interview X amount of candidates...
Each time the committee meets they bring up, let's say 20 files. I assume it takes about 5-10 minutes at least to get through a candidates file and reviews. I am also making the assumption that the file has been scanned over by the voting members. But in reality, I would assume the cost-benefit for the adcom would be to have highlights of the file be included in a powerpoint slide, instead of peering over the entire thing.

They can only work so fast. Just because others have heard before you, I don't think that disqualifies you. Amanda.eleven was not accepted until way later in the cycle. It is still fairly early in the cycle, in terms of acceptances. Only one batch has gone out... there's a lot more to come. Best of luck! :luck:

For those interviewing in the future and to those who have interviewed and are awaiting a decision... I encourage you to read this from Dean Folberg, on the culture of the school. I quote from the website...

---------------------------------------
"When the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine was being formed, a physician leader at the Beaumont Health System challenged us with a question: "How does one train a physician to be kind?"

The work of building the culture of the new Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine is our response to this important question. We understand the opportunity: it is easier to create a new culture than to change an existing culture. Our school brings many innovations to medical education. We consider our culture to be our most significant innovation.

In the years to come, we, the school's founders, will no longer be here. The buildings may be different. The science that is taught will have surely advanced. Educational technologies and methods, now considered to be "best practices" will be replaced by more effective practices. The culture of the school that we establish today, however, can be transmitted - one generation of faculty and staff to another, and one generation of students to another. The culture that we establish today may influence the practice of medicine by everyone who will ever attend our school. Therefore, our culture can influence the life of every patient who will ever been seen by our students.

It is difficult to change a culture. We therefore understand the urgency embedded in our "newness" because we are blessed with the rare opportunity to design an entire medical school culture. Our culture is not a series of courses or programs or an institute grafted onto a school or hospital system. Our culture emerges from a generous investment of attention and care to every detail of our daily work. We aspire to facilitate the growth of a medical student into a physician who achieves at levels that surpass competency, who is compassionate, who listens with focused intensity, and who communicates clearly with elevated cultural awareness. We expect our graduates who become scientists and clinician-scientists to understand that the endpoint of every experiment is a patient awaiting an answer.

If you understand our culture, then you understand most of what there is to know about the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine.

Robert Folberg, MD
Founding Dean, Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine
Chief Academic Officer, Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine"

------------------------------------------

The stuff I have bolded is why I love this school. They're not just thinking 5 years from now... the foundation they have laid down, is one that is going to be built on for years to come. Plus, I think the advantage that OUWB has over other new medical schools, is that they have Beaumont which has been doing clinical education for the last 60 some years already. The clinical education is unparalleled. The pre-clinical stuff is pretty much the same everywhere... the LCME mandates this. But, OUWB has decided to switch it up and incorporate a systems based approach, and use Team Based Learning to augment the instructional delivery.

/soliloquy, hope this helps future applicants who read this next cycle 🙂

If you had the guess... How many acceptance have they sent out?

I have been placed on hold for about a month now. Does anyone have experience with Oakland's hold? I know it's better than a rejection, but has anyone received an interview after being placed on hold? Thanks!

Congrats to everyone who has been accepted! 👍

As I posted earlier, I submitted my secondary on August 8th and I am still under review at this school. Does anyone know if sending update emails is allowed and whether they'll have any positive effect upon my consideration?

I believe that they do not consider update materials until you have a decision on your application post interview?

I could be mistaken. Amanda.eleven had told me this awhile back, but you're better off calling the school to ask them.

UPDATE:

Today feels like it will be a good day. I got a good feeling in my bones... Maybe I'll find a nickle on the floor, or maybe OUWB will call me, but I definitely got a good feeling... 😎

I hope so. Its been a while since anyone has posted any more acceptances from OUWB. I would also appreciate some good news soon.:xf:

Complete 8/9, but I haven't heard anything...I really want to interview here!

Anyone else in the same boat?

Thanks for the news! Keep us updated on what happens. I'll be sure to as well.

anyone know around when those who interviewed 10/11 are supposed to hear

Yeah, today is my 6-week Oakiversary...👎

I'm interviewing here next friday. From what you guys have said I am really looking forward to it. Did anyone think it was a high stress interview?

I'm OOS and only have a 28 MCAT so i'm really nervous... Well hopefully they see something in my app.

Low-stress as you can get. Just know your AMCAS primary well and your motivations and you'll be good to go. :luck:

Dont be nervous about your MCAT - as they say, once you are in the interview, you are on equal ground with everyone else there, even if they have 10 more points on their MCAT than you. And in fact, I would argue that you should be more confident than the 35ers: the fact that you are being invited with a relatively lower MCAT means there must be something pretty compelling about your app. Good luck!

To all those waiting to hear back, I remember from interview day that around the 3-4 week mark, either you're accepted and you get called or you get rejected and I'm sure you get an e-mail, but if you are still in the running you do not hear anything, and that it may be months before you hear some sort of new status to your application if they don't accept or reject. So I'd just keep giving them meaningful updates, and down the road when it gets to March or April if you really feel like this is your top choice, definitely write that letter of intent then (I think it was mentioned by someone in Admissions on Interview Day).

To those interviewing soon, good luck! Having gone on a couple more interviews after OUWB (which was my first one), I'm really impressed at the way they put together the day and how well treated we were by Admissions, faculty, and students. My interviews went really smoothly...some tougher questions in the afternoon interview but a great experience all around! They do a holistic review (which they talk about even more on interview day) so I'm sure there's something they see in you if you get an interview; it's not purely the numbers.

Good luck to all!

331 out of 420 Interviews Scheduled
as of: 10/27/2011

Still nothing....

Hey e'rebody, complete 10/26, interview offered 11/1. Hurray Oakland! Heading down for 11/11, it'll be my first interview, can't wait!

Such a long thread, I was wondering if someone from OUWB could tell me about how the school seems to prep you for entry into the national/international medical community. I've heard only stunning things about the learning environment, but I don't know much about how the school might set you up for residency opportunities, international summer electives, etc. Obviously it might be a tough question (given how no graduates yet exist), but even vague impressions on what the school might be promoting in those fields may be helpful!

Also, I have a question about acceptance guidelines. I'm from Canada, and my local med schools only begin giving out interviews in late January. Given that I'm interviewing next week (and assuming I even have a remote change of acceptance 😛), the acceptance offer deadline for OUWB comes way before I even hear back from schools in Canada. Obviously I'm super, super excited about my Oakland invite, but it scares me to think of having to close on an offer before I get any word from any other schools. Is there any flexibility with the system? Can you withdraw from an accepted admission?

Obviously all so skeptical, I'm definitely a few biiiig steps away from admissions decisions. Still, a girl can dream, right? Sometimes dreaming = planning.. 😀

You can hold multiple acceptances to MD schools till May 15th. After that, you can only hold one spot at a time.
