I apologize for obnoxiously posting a variation of the same thing every Tuesday...but I am dying to get into this school!!

ME TOO!!!!! I have to pay the seat deposit at a different school this Thursday and it's a non-refundable $500. :-( Knowing my luck I'll pay the fee, then get accepted next week. :-( Though.... that'd be better than paying the fee and not getting accepted next week!!! :-D Which in turn is better than not paying the fee, and never getting accepted anywhere else!! :-D

I know the feeling. I am just thankful I got in somewhere so that was the best fee I ever paid!

I keep thinking this which makes me feel better about my credit card debt "...application fees - just a drop in the bucket...!"

Good luck to all of you guys! I was accepted some time back and am rooting for all of you!

should be anytime now. I wonder if I will be let down again. Good luck folks!

Anyone Interview on 12/14 (tomorrow)?
I am sitting in my hotel room super nervous....🙁

At my interview they took the worst candidate, cooked them and served them for lunch. Don't worry though, I'm sure you're safe!

Good luck!

Accepted, OOS. I really thought I had bombed this interview but I guess you never know 🙂

Congrats!! mind sharing your stats?
Just a thought: people who got in last week were mainly Iowa students ( many are my friends) and this week no one from Iowa that I know got in, but you an OOS got in, is it possible that they alternate every week: one week for in state people, the other for out of state people? anyone know?

Congratulations to everyone who got in!!

Is anyone considering applying for the summer research fellowship? Or are there any current students who have? There is a professor at Iowa who is studying the one specific thing I am interested in (aging in Russia) and I have emailed him about the research fellowship and he is happy to be my mentor. However, I really think Case Western Reserve is a better fit for me, plus I will have more time there to do research. Does anyone know of anyone who went as a pre-M1 to Iowa City to do research? And any thoughts on doing this if I won't be an Iowa student (like other sources of funding I could get, etc.) Thanks!

Anybody have any opinions on the distinction tracks? I think it's kind of dumb that the school forces you into the extra workload assuming that students won't have the initiative to seek out these activities on their own. It would be a lot nicer, imo, if the school didn't require these.

I thought they were optional..are you referring to the tracks in global health, research etc? I don't remember being told they were required on interview day.

Yeah. I'm pretty sure you are required to choose one distinction track, but at least you are able to choose. I was just doing a little reading on their website and each track appears to be fairly rigorous with many activities, presentations, and a project required outside of the demands of classes and clerkships. I could be wrong about them being required, but I don't want to be tied to one aspect of medical education for four years. I would like to experience a variety of research, service, humanities, etc. opportunities at my own pace and on my own terms.

Misconception. The distinction tracks are not required. Furthermore, you may start one and drop it without penalty if you're having difficulty completing the program. This was discussed during interview day

Thanks for that. I was really hoping they weren't required, but I couldn't find anything that said they weren't. I wonder if they were required in the past or something because I remember seeing a class picture of a segment of a class in MERF a while ago and under each person, their distinction track was listed with their match results or something. Sorry for the confusion.

Just logged on to my secondary application page to check my status, II sent sometime this afternoon.

Somewhat surprised, thought I read somewhere on this thread that the admissions office was done scheduling for the holiday season. Regardless, there were 4 dates to choose from, earliest was Jan. 18th.

Best of Luck!

I am also interested in this so if someone could elaborate on the summer fellowship, I would appreciate it!

Its all good, I was glad they got everything cleared up on interview day regarding the distinction tracks

Congrats! I didn't think I did too hot in my interview either, but we'll see! Would you mind sharing exactly when you interviewed? Thanks!

Final Pooled today. Interviewed 11/15. OOS.

Final pooled is not that bad. Keep your hopes up!
Do you mind sharing your stats?
PS. did you really interview on 11/15? that is a Tuesday! I'm pretty sure it is a typo.
Have a good day and hopefully you will get in on March 30th.

So if you go into the secondary, and you check "contact info" there is a little box that says "Last Update: [Date] [Time]" Does anyone know if this has anything to do with being reviewed etc? My last update was December 14, and I haven't logged into the secondary since probably November so I was just curious.

Also, if you're final pooled, do you know on the tuesday that they review your file that you've been final pooled?

I interviewed mid-October and haven't heard back yet...

That's the last time you updated your contact information, not when you were reviewed.

Treesop, do you mind sharing if you interviewed early, mid, or late Oct along with stats please?

Im saying that I didn't update my info though, I haven't accessed AMCAS or my secondary for a long time....anyways, not gonna read too much into it

I think you'll be notified a couple days after the committee reviews your file. I received my final pool notification yesterday so it might vary. :-D

Final Pooled today. Interviewed 11/15. OOS.

What I mean by this is that you seem to have gotten an "initial decision", having interviewed a month later than I, while I haven't heard anything at all...

...can anybody offer input into this? Anybody interview before/after 11/15 and also get a thumbsup/thumbssideways (as I'm calling these sort of things)?

Oh ok, gotcha my bad. I just re-read my post and I don't want to give you the wrong impression - I didn't mean to sound like a smart ass or anything. I interviewed in Oct and my contact update still says July, hence my reply 🙂

The review process is random. They select 25 files at a time at complete random to review. So, I interviewed on the 30th of November, and I could conceivably be reviewed the following tuesday and offered a decision before someone who interviewed in the 1st week of October. Hope this helps

This. Skim through the thread, the process is described multiple times. From what we know, I wouldn't worry about people who interviewed after you hearing back earlier.

So the general consensus is that 25 files are reviewed randomly each week. So that would mean it doesnt matter what one's residency status is. IS or OOS. But it seems to me that IS students seem to hear before OOS

Hmm.

I don't really recall hearing that it was a totally random pull of 25.

In fact, I recall them mentioning that there is a chronological aspect. But, I could be completely and absolutely wrong...

Oh well. Fingers crossed!

Definitely lower than the average. Looking at the calendar it was definitely on the 16th. Thanks, good luck.

Is that bad news that I got final pooled so quickly?

No there is two separate subcommittees: one solely initially review IS applicants, the other review OOS applicants for initial review. Any applicant that makes it past this stage will be reviewed by the full committee. This might explain why IS/OOS hear back on different Tuesdays.

Right, there is a rolling admission aspect to it as well.
First: You will not be eligible for review before sometime after your interview. That is how I understand it. Could be 2 weeks after your interview before they can potentially review your application. That way, people who interviewed earlier will have a better chance of getting reviewed earlier.

@ jlzeman:

Congratulations!!! 🙂 I interviewed the same day, haven't heard back yet. Which one were you?

(Sorry, new to posting-- tried to quote you but it didn't work. 😛 )

Well, the easiest identifier is that I was one of two girls (I think) not wearing a suit jacket with a blue shirt. From in state, and I'll graduate this spring.

I hope it is random and it is not a strict date by date review process. I exchanged numbers with 2 applicants on my interview day (had fun here😀). I checked with them this morning, 1 received an acceptance last week (didn't ask for exact date), the other has not heard anything back. All three of us are OOS and interviewed 11/18. The wait continues.

I just logged on to SDN to ask the same question! Not that I have a high likelihood of being reviewed 3 weeks after my interview.

I just remembered. On my interview day, they said that the adcom is taking a two week hiatus from reviewing applicants/interviewees. Looks like the wait continues ha. I really like Iowa a lot. The only bummer was that my tour guide wasn't very enthusiastic or informative on the school. He didn't give us an exciting feeling, and I had to keep asking question upon question just to get anything out of him. Oh well, Iowa is still amazing. Best of luck all! :luck::xf:👍

There is no reason not to meet this week. Professors at the University of Iowa have to turn in their grades by Wed... so they are still around. However, the two week hiatus will happen, most likely, next week and the week after.
