anyone know how wayne feels about update emails? I just started a medically related job that I want to inform them about
When I applied there several years ago I sent them an update with similar content. I would wait a few weeks, and then write specifically about what you have learned in your new job and how you can apply it as a medical student at wayne or elsewhere, and how it will benefit their program. Give them something more than "Oh Hai thurr, I have new job".
Granted I applied late, got my secondary invite in december and sent the letter in January. I got an interview invite a couple of weeks later. I actually sent a letter to most schools to which I applied and got like 7 interview invites around then. Just make sure your letter is good. I mean, really well written and concise. The content itself can suck, but it needs to be well written and you need to establish a theme to your application that you can continue to reference in your interviews.
Never sell yourself short by omitting information you think will help you.

Rejected! Oh well, guess we weren't meant to be, Wayne...

Good luck to everyone else!

do you mind saying what your stats were. Im not trying to pry...just curious to understand the WSU adcom logic here.

WHAT THE 😱😱😱😱😱

yea i agree, but someone was saying that WSU rejects people that seem like they are choosing their school as a safety. I guess that might have been the impression they got, unless there was a glaring weakness in your app: criminal conviction, IA, etc.

Hahaha, seems like I'm a little late in the game as everyone is talking about interviews, but I got my secondary today 😀

For anyone still spazzing about not getting a secondary yet, I'll post my stats

complete date: August 16 (at least, when I received the "prescreen" email)
secondary: September 8 (23 days of agony!!!)

Amcas GPA: 3.75
Science GPA: 3.59

MCAT: 31 R (9V/12P/10B)

NJ Resident

Yeah, I'm not sure:shrug:. I have 7 interviews though so no glaring weakness that I know of, but you never know....

yea, so it must be the first reason that the other person was mentioning. Good luck with your other interviews though. At least you can take solace in the fact that youll most likely get in this cycle, especially with seven interviews.

Screened in! How many secondaries do they send out? And how controversial can I be in the future challenges essay?

Well I just got back from the interview. There were two other applicants interviewing that I saw, neither one was EDP. I spoke with an adviser who is on the admission committee, and the interview was very laid back. There were no tough questions at all, and he didn't even ask the standard "why medicine?" or "why Wayne State" questions. I arrived about 25 minutes before the interview, and was told by the lady at the admissions desk what date I would receive an answer. I was asked to wait until 10:25 (interview time was 10:30) and then go down to the desk outside his office to let him know I was there. I was brought back to his office right on time, and the interview lasted around 50 minutes.

He spent most of the time talking to me, and we discussed the current admission practices of Wayne State, as well as various points he found interesting in my application. The tour afterward was pretty basic and quick, and I got to talk to a few second year students. To everyone who will be interviewing, relax, this is a very easy-going interview and you will not likely be challenged during it, but from my experience and what the second year students were saying. Good luck all, now it is just waiting for the end of the month!

Got a rejection letter today oh well

I feel like extremely laid back interviews don't really show the interviewer or the school more about yourself. I would rather be thrown challenging questions or thorough questions about my life so they could get to know me on a personal level. I guess that's why Wayne rejected me lol jk

Sorry to hear that! I would like to have both laid back and challenging questions. If that's possible.

I disagree here. I had a laid back interview recently, we talked about travel, food, wine, mountain climbing etc. Amongst my aspirations to medicine and my motive for applying to the school.

An extremely rigid interview, allows no room for personal expression.

To play devils advocate, I can say from personal experience that too relaxed of an interview can give you false hopes. Last year, I fell head over heels in love with a school I interviewed at with a super comfortable interview (that I therefore felt like I rocked). That rejection stung like a mutha'.

What school?

The school I am referring to, I had two interviews in the same day. One with a faculty member(PhD)/dean and another with a doctor at the teaching hospital.

Both interviews felt great. All the points I wanted to hit were hit. Plus, you can get a good vibe off your interviewer.

But you also have to remember that it is not your interviewers decision alone. It is up to a committee vote.

EDIT: I looked through your post history, seems you got a lot of waitlist action. Did you apply late? That also may play a big factor. I noticed your stats were competitive as well. I wish you luck this cycle!

So it's late. I get home, check my mail, and lo and behold...a snail mail invite!!!! 🙂

Does anyone know how Wayne State is conducive towards rescheduling? I already have an interview on the 21st and the Wayne State interview is scheduled for the 19th. I would love to go on that date, but I can't be away from work for 3 days!! Nonetheless I am thrilled!!!

Also, it says on the letter that my interview is scheduled for 11:00 AM. Does that mean I just arrive on that time without prior orientation?

Congrats Peter! Wish you best of luck on your interview. I heard Wayne shows a lot of love to their students from a matriculant I met.

If things are the same as last year, then yes. There is no orientation. You will have one interview (30-60 minutes long) and an optional tour/lunch with current students. Pretty low key

This is accurate for this year as well. For anyone with an interview after lunch, the student-led tour will be held first (ours was from noon until around 1:15, including lunch). Just show up 15 minutes early like the letter requests, the receptionist in the admissions office will tell you who you will be interviewing with and when you will have a decision. She will also take your statement of technical standards. Good luck.

Thanks! Wasn't expecting to get an interview from Wayne because I'm OOS, so I feel really fortunate. Hope you hear good news from them as well :luck:

So I called them and it looks like I'm pushing my interview back a month. Since Wayne is non-rolling, will this not adversely impact me?

I do not think this will adversely impact you at all. They do state that they offer 1/7th of the class at a time.

Should be fine. Good luck!

presecondary

Mind if I ask you to share your stats? It's just that Wayne has yet to request a secondary from me, and I got the "We prescreen applications before determining if a Secondary Application will be requested. *Your application is under review at this time." email on 8/16, and still no news.

Anyone else - is this a good thing, bad thing or neither-just-be-patient thing?

Be patient young grasshopper. They take some time.

Thanks. It took a 8 days for me to reach their snail mail invite. The letter was dated on 09/01, I received it on on 09/08, and the interview is for 09/19. I called them yesterday to re-schedule but the person in charge of scheduling wasn't in the office. Ideally, I'd like to schedule on 10/10 since I'm interviewing at Oakland on 10/11. I just hope, when I call them on Monday, that I'm giving them sufficient notice to re-schedule.

sure thing. ugpa <3.4, grad gpa 3.9, mcat 32S and OOS. i'm not too bent up out of shape because i filled out way too many secondaries this summer so not having to do another didn't seem that appealing. i forgot when i had gotten the initial email but i submitted 6/1 so it was pretty early. good luck to all of you still in at wayne state!

I hope this is my year! As an alumnus, I love this school and the city of Detroit. I was waitlisted until the very end of the recent cycle. Just submitted my secondary. Good luck to everyone!

For my answer to the II B secondary question, I am under the word limit but over the character limit. Will it be okay to submit this way, or should I also try to get under the character limit?

wow, i hate this secondary so much, especially question II, option a and option b both suck! any advice guys?

for (a)-are they talking about the challenges of being a physician? or what?

for (b)-do i have to research the health care reform going on right now and address how i would adapt...

UGH!

They ask basically the same thing. In my essay, I answered both questions.

I submitted in late July and I haven't got a secondary application yet. Can I assume that I was rejected or is there still a chance?

Since you print out the essay, the words and characters are not auto-counted. I wouldn't be too concerned with it myself, as I doubt a reviewer is going to get a pencil and count each and every character, and reject you for going over. They set the limits as guidelines to keep the essays managable, so I wouldn't worry about it.

In the same boat since 8/17. But I did get an email response from an adcom member that an addendum I sent in after my application was in was added to my file...

Hey guys,

I am a fellow Wolverine who graduated in 2009 looking to apply to Wayne. I have a 3.54/34 but my sGPA is low at 3.3 (my As were mostly non-bio classes which means my bio GPA is really about 3.1). I've been living in MI since graduating and have volunteered for a year at a hospital, earned my EMS license, and was the pilot scribe for a successful scribe program at a private practice (1 year, seen over 10,000 patients).

I was wondering if I have a chance at this school? I heard that Wayne puts heavy emphasis on GPA, particularly an upward trend which is something I don't have. I was planning on taking some extra courses this Winter but they apparently MUST see 20 credits? I don't think I can fit in that many in 6 months....

What do you guys think?
Thanks!

20 credits minimum of upper level science preferably biology, and the adcom will throw out your science GPA and use the 20 credits average.

You have a great MCAT and experiences. I would apply away and hope for the best. :luck:

i think for the a they want you to discuss what you think the difficulties associated with your practice. in b. they want you to discuss what the difficulties would be in aligning with the needs of the country.

Thank you for the encouragement!

Do you think its worth taking 12 or so credits this coming Winter/Spring and then apply to medical school in general? Or is that not enough course work to make a difference? Do you think applying this year is to Wayne is out of the question since it's so late?

It's however you construe it. I thought both questions dealt with the same matter - they just want to know that you know enough about what you are getting yourself into, and that you are aware of modern healthcare issues.

Wayne gives out admissions on a rolling basis. They offer 1/7th of the class at a time.

So submitting late, as an instate applicant especially, will not be disadvantageous to you.

My best advice is as follows...

Plan A)
-Take some post-bacc classes, take 20... find some easy courses to fill in there, like astronomy (4 credit hrs right there usually) and it counts towards BCPM GPA.

-Rock those classes, continue your volunteering and your experiences. Start working on your personal statement, line up your letter writers at least 2-3 months in advance of your application.

-Get everything ready. AMCAS opens in May of 2012 for Fall 2013 entry.

-Submit on June 1st. With your stats, apply to at least 15-20 schools. PM me in a few months and I'll help you compile a school list. Get interviews, rock those, and then attain medical school acceptance. Become MD.

[THERE IS NO RUSH TO APPLY THIS YEAR...but also read plan B]

Plan B)

-Do all of the above... but...

-SCRAMBLE to get your app in as soon as possible to your state schools. (If you're a michigan resident, apply to OUWB, Michigan State, and Wayne State)

-You might get lucky and get in... but it is getting late in the process. But if you have the money and the time, go forth and apply.

🙂

But remember WWCBD (What Would CodeBlu Do?) - I would wait out a cycle and work from NOW on making your application the best possible application it can be. Getting to and completing medical school, and furthermore residency is a marathon, not a sprint. You CAN do this, you WILL do this... but there's no need to stress over it.

Damn CodeBlu. You should be able to put all the time you put into helping others on this forum as a volunteer activity on your amcas. 🙂

LOL, it didn't take me that long to type it out. I'm hoping my willingness to help reaps me at least one acceptance this cycle. That's all I want. Just somewhere to call home and to become a doctaaaaa.

Hey man. Thank you for your advice. I love people such as your selves who are so enthusiastic about medicine and support it 100%! May I ask, are you a wolverine? I believe I saw that you were in a post you made.

And unfortunately, unless I become a full time student in the Winter with 16+ credits, it is going to be hard for me to make those 20 credits you spoke of. I have been away from school for 2 years so I don't want to give myself a workload where I won't be able to make those straight As.

I am not a Wolverine. But I am from Michigan and I am back in the state now.

Well then, take it slow. Modify the plan as needed and holler at me when you need anything. :luck:

😀

Just a final question. Do you think it is still worth going through taking extra courses if I am able to only get about 12 credits under my belt before applying? It costs alot of money and I'm trying to stay out of as much debt as I can....
