I interviewed on December 14 and I believe they mentioned that the results would be out by the end of January, can anyone confirm this?

Hey so I am trying to decide if trying to catch a 715pm flight after my interview will be too risky. They said I should expect to be there until 5pm. Does anybody, who has interviewed here, have any input?

Soon someone will post they got the phone call and every one will be like "AAAAAHHHHH!!!!!" "When did you interview!!??" Haha

Falcinator, that's basically what I did when I interviewed there. If that's your only option for leaving that night, then I would go for it, but then tell Admissions when your flight is. Perhaps they will be nice and schedule you earlier in the afternoon as some schools tend to do. The only thing you should worry about is IF one of your interviewers has an emergency and they make you wait a long time before you are seen. This happened to two people in my cohort and did not reflect well on the school because they had to wait for longer than one hour. So may the odds be ever in your favor!

(By the way, I took a taxi back to the airport in front of one of the hospitals.)

You should be fine with the 7:15pm flight. The interview day is pretty much over around 3:30pm, or 4pm the latest.

Congrats! Have you given them an application update since then?

Got an II around the same time as falcinator. Called them about updating my application and they told me to bring the update letter to the interview so they can add it to my file.

Just wanted to say that a number of current med students are on this thread and we're available to answer any questions that you have about Hopkins, the curriculum, research opportunities, financial aid... etc.

When I went to my interview at Hopkins, all the students kept insisting that everyone shares notes and that it's not very competitive. They said that this is a misconception that people have which stems from the competitive reputation of their undergrad. But the thing is, these students were all first and second years who haven't even gotten to their clinical rotations yet. So in your opinion, does most of the competition arise during the clinical rotations, as one would expect? And do you think this competition at Hopkins is naturally harsher than at other schools? A lot of people would say the competition would be the same at any other school, but let's get real here--most people who get accepted and matriculate at Hopkins fall more toward the "gunner" side of the spectrum (not generalizing this for everyone).

So I'll offer some of my thoughts, but a disclaimer: I'm also a 1st year student, so I don't have direct experience with clinical rotations.

However, I've met a number of 3rd/4th/5th year students. There is a program for 1st-years where, if you want, you can be paired a 4th-year student, and they basically take you around the hospital, showing you their patients, allowing you to practice interviewing/examining/presenting your findings to them. It's an incredible way to see the clinical curriculum even during your first couple of months here, and many of my classmates have had a great experience with it. Then there are also upperclassmen that I've met through extracurricular organizations, college (the 4 advising colleges) activities, and research/shadowing (i.e. older med students who are working with my mentors/preceptors). If my experiences are indicative of anything, I'd say that Hopkins genuinely doesn't have a competitive atmosphere. 99% of everyone I've met here, from the student affairs deans to professors to residents to the med students, are really willing to help each other out and be supportive in times of difficulty/stress.

Now, I'm not trying to say that no one here has a type-A personality. As you correctly pointed out, most of my classmates are definitely highly motivated and push themselves very hard. And for a small number of people (pooghe, you can let me know if you agree but I think I know the answer.... haha :meanie:), this can occasionally veer into being a bit.. hm.. pushy or off-putting. But I can say that overall, there are vanishingly few "gunners" in our class (as in, even if I'm trying to be really judgmental, I have a really hard time thinking of somebody). I see people work hard and set high goals for themselves, but that's very, very different from being antagonist, rude, or disrespectful. The sheer amount of helpful notes/websites/files/textbooks/study tools you can find on our class Facebook page are legal evidence of that.

TL;DR I truly don't think Hopkins Med deserves a reputation for being competitive, and I haven't seen anything to indicate otherwise.

Edit: Also I think it's worth noting that despite there being grades during the clinical (Late spring of 2nd year through 4th year) curriculum, you'll be working in very small teams of students (or solo) and aren't exactly graded on a curve... so I don't think "competitiveness" is even a major factor at that point, if you're worried about that. I'd be more worried about whether the attendings/residents at a particular hospital are angry/rude/incompetent. But based on my limited sample size of having shadowed folks in a few departments, I still don't think we have that issue. 🙂

Happy to answer any other questions.

My experiences have been very similar to Sharpie. The term "gunner" as it is frequently used on these boards has a lot of negative connotations. I have yet to meet anyone who can be described as a gunner here. Speaking with 3rd/4th/5th year students it seems that gunnerish behavior isn't seen on the wards either. You'll often be working with one or two other med students on your teams which means everybody has opportunity to shine. Many of the 4th years I've talked to are happy with their clinical year experiences and the teaching that happens on the wards. There are so many opportunities here that you don't really need to outcompete anyone. People do set high standards for themselves but that isn't unique to Hopkins.

Hey guys, paranoid southerner here who sees snow probably once a year...does anyone know if interview day has ever been cancelled/delayed because of it? (It's supposed to snow on Friday in Baltimore)

Is it correct that the next round of acceptances/waitlist/regrets will be the end of this month?

Based on preview years, does anybody have an educated guess for the date that we should expect the next batch to come? at this point "end of the month" is too abstract for me...

Just when I thought my interviews were over...

II an hour ago. For Feb 8th. :|

That is AWESOME! Could you please share your stats/ when you were complete? Thanks!!

Thanks! Got the "complete" email October 3rd. Stats 3.99 science/3.97overall, 38Q. Good luck to everyone else still waiting on interviews! :luck:

Does anyone know when Hopkins stops giving out II's?

I had a question about the second look. It's from April 11-14, right? Also, my parents want to come, but I'm not sure how many guests we're allowed to bring. Would it even be a good idea to bring them, or will they just be bored?

Yes, most of the activities are on Friday April 12 and Saturday April 13.

You can bring as many guests as would like to visit, though I'm not sure if/how we will be able to provide housing accommodations for them this year. You'll be receiving details about Second Look in the coming months, so my classmates will probably be able to address your questions at that time.

My girlfriend had a nice time when she visited last year. Aside from informational sessions and tours of the medical campus, there are also student organization activities and some activities around Baltimore. If nothing else, Baltimore has some incredible places to visit/eat/shop/take a stroll, so your family might be interested in taking a look around town. 🙂

When is the round after that? Middle/late March I heard? Can any of the current students confirm?

Accepted via phone call just now! Interviewed November 1st.

Congrats! Did you get the call after 5 pm eastern time? 😵

On a side note, do acceptance calls usually come out on one day or a span? Also, if you are rejected/waitlisted when will they notify you?

I think last batch it was over 2-3 days?
And the rejection/waitlist usually comes out a day or two after the calls I believe via email.

Don't give up hope, guys, it took me many anxiety-fueled days to receive the call in December after people had began posting their acceptances. Almost a week if I recall correctly.

Received a call today, but they left a message and I couldn't call back before the person left for the day - and they don't return until Wednesday, so I won't find out the good news (hopefully) until Wednesday.

I'm not sure if one person does all the calls, but if they do (and it happens to be the woman that called me) then there may not be additional calls until Wednesday.

Does anyone know if they award financial aid at the time of calling - or does all aid get distributed at the same time after admission decisions?

Good luck everyone! 🙂

I think Valerie Mazza makes all the calls. Is she the one that called you?
