Many people commute, it's very doable. The first two years won't be an issue at all. Third year will be harder since the hours will be longer and the day starts earlier (be prepared to wake up at 4:30 am on more intense rotations), but in the end it's just one year. I've known many people commuting from lower Manhattan, Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Westchester, NJ, etc. with commute times that fall within 30-60 minutes. It's definitely a perk to live by Sinai but not a necessity. You can PM me if you have more specific questions.

This helps. I'm wondering if living in Jersey will take away from the 'living in NY' experience. I've never lived in NY and experiencing it was/is a big 'looking forward to' factor for me.

It will take away from it somewhat, but depends where your priorities lie.

Do you need a 2 bedroom apartment the first year? They're good at finding you a 2 bedroom if you need it later on, but if you currently don't have any kids then it doesn't even make much sense to have a 2 bedroom apartment, and I don't even know if you would qualify. The 1 bedroom apartments are like 500-1000 cheaper, so it would definitely be easier if costs are an issue. Just a thought.

Need? No. But if we live in the city, my wife will try to telecommute some and a second room would be good both for her and me to work. Also, we do plan to have kids and would rather not move. Thirdly, we haven't really been comfortable in our one bedroom and it's been just a lot of stress, which will undoubtedly get worse with med school plus her working/commuting.

So now, we don't need it but we're trying.

I'm from NJ and currently live in NYC, so while I can't give you the perspective of a med student, I can tell you that plenty of people live in NJ and still can experience NYC to the fullest. A lot of people in NYC end up only frequenting places (restaurants, bars, etc.) in their immediate vicinity though -- it's a very NYC thing to do, even though most things are a subway ride away, so you might miss out on spontaneous/informal events. If you're married and want kids, though, I'd say NJ >> NYC -- you'll potentially have more space.

Is a longer commute worth it to you? Sinai is on the Upper East Side, which isn't that easily accessible from anywhere in NJ. Also, would you be driving or taking public transportation?

I have a car, but grew up in DC and can do public trans. Google maps says Jersey City is about 70 minutes by public trans.

I'd do whatever's easiest.

Where in Jersey would your wife be commuting to? If you're looking for space and potentially somewhere to settle, look into the Kingsbridge area of the Bronx. It would be a fairly straightforward car commute to Jersey for her (avoiding most Manhattan traffic), and not a terrible subway commute (but not ideal) for you. You get more space for your dollar, and you're next to Riverdale and Fieldston (fairly fru fru areas), with the related shops and services.

Also, this.

She isn't exactly sure yet but it would be White Plains or New Brunswick.

Wait, like, White Plains, NY? She could take MetroNorth (Harlem line) up there from 125th St, or you could live in the Bronx near the train. Would be a long commute either way.

For New Brunswick, that's NJ transit which runs out of Penn Station, so you'd be better off living on the UWS, say, so she'd have a more direct subway commute.

Just got rejected pre-interview. Been complete since late July.

It looks like we made it to their final round of rejections. I was complete in October and just got the pre-interview rejection email, too.

It doesn't hurt as much to get rejected by Icahn since I never applied to a school named that.

Could someone please clarify for me?

Im assuming they mean that if you are one of the lucky (5) to get accepted into PORTAL, that they pay all 4 years tuition + stipend for the 5th? am I misunderstanding or is this correct??

I would still recommend for your sake that you not live in Jersey. Shoot for a location that will be minimize the subway commute for you (don't bother trying to car commute to Sinai), even if it means a slightly longer car commute for her. I assume her job would not be right near transit, so she'd be driving?

The safe (-isssh), less expensive areas that'll get you more space would be central harlem (in the 110s), manhattanville (just north of CU in the), inwood, (all in manhattan, but on the west side) then kingsbridge in the bronx. As you go north, things get cheaper.

Commuting from SI, Brooklyn, or Queens would be terrible for her depending on if she's going to Jersey or White Plains.

No, you only get tuition for the one year you take to get the masters.

How is Mount Sinai's Pass/Fail calculated?

Is it straight numbers (e.g. everything over 70 is a Pass) or is it based on standard deviations (e.g. anything less than 2 SD from the mean is a Fail)?

Short answer: It varies from class to class but the majority were straight numbers.

Long answer: Some have a straight number, some do standard deviations but I think in those classes there was some way to avoid failing the course like the exams are worth 80% of your grade and the passing score is based on the exams alone but then the final 20% of your grade comes from small group so if you barely failed the exams and did well in small group you could still pass the class (I'm not really sure, I was never close to the cutoff and the only course I know people failed is the biochem class -M&C- which I didn't take since I'm MD/PhD and so I don't remember what the grading was). In some classes it could be either, like passing is 1.5 SDs below the mean or 60, whichever is lower.

This is the last week of interviews, so hopefully decisions will be coming out soon.....

Love. This. School.

I looked at past threads:
Last year, decisions came out March 20.
The year before, decisions came out March 9.

Just in case anyone was wondering.👍

i interviewed earlier this week and we were told we may get a decision as soon as next friday.

Oh, ok, so I guess they were referring to next week, not this week, with "second week in March". Sigh. More waiting!

Hope your interview went well 🙂

hold up, I thought this place was rolling. Have they given out any waitlist/rejection decisions post interview?

The 2012-2013 interview season is officially over as of today!

Good luck with everyone waiting to hear back, and come to Second Look if you get in! It'll be a great time.

Is there even any hope for those of us who were deferred/continued before the new year? Are they even going to send out any acceptances for those applicants?

Does anybody know whether they have handed out the merit scholarship? Are international students eligible for this?

I am also interested in this. My only chance to go to this school and it is my absolute favorite. Does anyone have this info?

At my interview, the financial aid guy was super helpful. If you contact him, I'm sure he'd help you out. I don't remember what his email was, but I think it's in the financial aid info packet he gave out at the interview.

Actually he kindly told me that I could take a break outside since the financial aid session is irrelevant to me...

anyone know how they contact us for the decision? Phone? Email? Snail Mail?
Im sick of freaking out each time I get a call from an unknown # that ends up being a telemarketer

So far this cycle it has been emails!

Congratulations to those students who have been accepted! To those students who haven't yet heard, I wish you the best of luck.

In order to facilitate everyone getting to know their *potential* future classmates, the revisit committee (of which I am a member) has made the following facebook group for the Class of 2017. It is currently populated by a bunch of current students who would be happy to answer your questions regarding ISOM.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/330434157076905/

If you have been accepted, please go ahead and join the group, even if you will not be attending revisit. I look forward to meeting you all soon and should you have any questions, feel free to PM me (FYI I am a student so any questions regarding admission should be directed to that office).

So are we sure that tomorrow's gonna be the big day for those of us still waiting to hear back? Anyone know if this will be the last committee meeting?
