Received my accepted students packet in the mail today!!!

Just wish my IRS Tax Transcript would hurry up, so I can file financial aid already!

I just stalked last year's thread and last year, wait listed students were invited for Second Look??

I don't think waitlisted students are invited this year.

Getting caught smuggling a cat would probably guarantee you an eviction, which in my opinion would be disastrous. You'd probably end up being forced to pay ~$500 more a month for a smaller apt in the area or paying about the same but with a decently long commute. In short, definitely not worth the hassle/risk.

Aron Hall is absolutely no pets (besides fish and the like.) Couples housing might allow pets though.

I'm assuming you haven't lived in Aron hall since your sig says you're an entering MD/PhD this fall, so how would you know this? I know that is says on a pdf on the housing website no pets, but I know of a few student housing places at other schools where there are officially no pets allowed yet >50% of people openly have a pet(s) and have essentially no eviction risk. It seems though that the two Sinai students who live/lived in Aron hall who answered said it isn't commmonplace and would have to be hid. Therefore, I will not get a cat if I attend Sinai/live in Aron.

According to the AAMC (https://www.aamc.org/download/268838/data/lecture_video_recording_and_attendance.pdf) lectures at Sinai are recorded but posted only at 4pm. Can a current student comment on whether this presents any problems? I know other schools simulcast lectures or at least have them available immediately after class, so your thoughts would be much appreciated.

I'm not super concerned about this, but I'm curious as to whether the video of the professor speaking gets uploaded, or if it's just a feed of the powerpoint with the audio.

The feed with the powerpoint and audio AND the video of the professor both get uploaded. As far as being uploaded at 4 pm, I'm not entirely sure that's true. I vaguely remember accessing them before that (don't quote me on that, though, because I do usually watch them after that time).

I haven't heard of anyone living in Aron with pets. I have seen pets being smuggled in by friends of Aron Hall residents (just for visits). The smugglers take it pretty seriously (I'm talking putting puppies in bags and covering them with a shirt or something while walking in and out of the building), so I'm guessing the Aron Hall staff take it pretty seriously.

lol, I'm lucky if I'm able to watch them all by the time of the exam 😛 I don't think I've ever watched a lecture the same day it was conducted...

They get uploaded whenever the system gets the video "processed." This year Sinai upgraded their video recording system and sometimes it takes awhile (a few hours) to get the lecture processed for viewing. There's video of the professor, the board, and also of the Powerpoint. You can directly download the lecture audio and the video of the Powerpoint (with audio) so you can speed it up on your computer for watching.

I was wondering if anyone has received any information about merit scholarships? was told before the end of march the last time I called. Can someone please do me the favor of calling on Monday to ask? I am an international student, so that is pretty much the only aid I can receive. Case Western has already offered me a good lump sum but my heart is at Sinai.

Someone called recently about financial aid packages, and they were told that financial aid packages were expected to go out early April. I'm guessing merit scholarships would go out along with financial aid packages.

Does anyone know if financial aid stuff is typically mailed or emailed?

Anyone got word of hosts for Second Look yet?

Does Mount Sinai need deposit to hold the spot?

I got my student yesterday, and the people organizing it are getting the assignments out. You should be contacted soon.

Cool. Haven't heard yet, just want to know if I have a place Thursday night. I'm getting in at 730 am Thursday and will probably just chill at a cafe until a reasonable time

Any word on what the attire is? Bus Cas?

Any word on what the attire is? Bus Cas?

Don't know what the official policy is but when I revisited in 2010, it was business casual although I saw people in even less. Rumor has it if your outfit is bad enough they'll rescind...j/k😀

I think you're supposed to be business casual for the second day (Sat) when you meet the deans and such in the morning (I'm not sure why you need to dress up for this...) but then tomorrow (Friday) since you're just hanging out with the students, going to dinner, and going drinking, casual should be ok from what I remember.

Even if you don't have nice clothes for the second day, it's not a big deal. They'll just take your name down and you'll get some extra "attention" next year when you matriculate 😉 (jk!)

no, not URM. Does anyone have info on previous years? im not going to go, i have another planned for that weekend. I wished they would hav told us earlier

on wait list and just got invitation to second look
same here. it means that a select few on the alternate list are invited to attend a revisit weekend. I would think that it's possibly the "top-tier" part of the list who they feel will most likely will get a spot in the end. This has mind****ed me since I had already cancelled the possibility of getting into my top choice.

Well that's disappointing then. Ironically I just sent Sinai an email about an hour ago asking about ranking and some details of the waitlist. I guess this gives me the answers I was seeking, seeing as I didn't receive an invite.

i got the email as well. i am such a loser that before i saw the date i was thinking 'invite to the revisit that starts in two hours.....i'll be there." lol

In the financial aid budget, housing is listed as $7,573, but I'm not clear as to whether that's for the 10 month period of school or the 1 year lease (rooms in Aaron Hall are 1 year leases, right?).

Can any current students clarify? Also, is the rate lower if you're in a suite with more rooms in it?

My room (and the cheapest you can get in Aron hall (basically on a lower floor, with 4 or 6 rooms)) is something like 573 dollars a month. The "top tier" rooms (upper floor, duplex, with a balcony) can go up to about 700 dollars a month. There's a range of rooms in the middle that go for 600 some dollars in the middle floors and the cheaper duplexes. They must have taken an average of all the available rents in Aron Hall to make that budget.

Once you start living in Aron, you're responsible for the whole year. You can't terminate for MS1 summer (at least going through a complicated process and you would probably have to pay a fee to get reinstated into Aron later anyway). Most of us just found somebody who was here doing research or one of the HuMeds who was coming in for their summer program to sublet for the whole period. It's really easy to find a subletter, don't worry. (note you can't charge them for more than what the room costs) The same goes for if you ever have to leave Aron for any period of time (like away rotation).

Also re: budget, it always is kind of inflated. I spend ~$100 on books and copying, and you don't need to buy any of the equipment they list on that budget. There, I just knocked off almost $2k from your budget 🙂

+1 to second look event invitation as a member of the alternate list. Unfortunately, I have plans already and will be unable to attend.

I hope this means that we are at the top of the wait list, but at the same time I hope they realize not being able to attend isnt because of lack of interest.

Anyone else get their financial aid estimate? Kind of disappointed, 100 percent loans 🙁

Got my financial estimate too. Same boat. Has anyone gotten merit?

For the people getting all loans, you or parents made decent money last few years?

Thanks for the very helpful response. Just one more question related to housing, but are the numbers you're listing including utilities?

I didn't see any merit scholarships on mine, but I would assume they would've offered them to whoever their first picks were already. Of course, I have no evidence to back this up.

jakobinarino - I would say that compared to most people in this country, my parents have done quite well all things considered. After looking at a loan calculator, though it's pricey, in the long run it doesn't matter that much. If you're willing to live frugally, loans would be paid off pretty quickly. The subsidized loans help a fair bit. I also think it's probably worth noting that Mount Sinai is still substantially cheaper than the public medical school at the university I'm based at...

I think it's ironic I'm making these points when I was the one who said that this was expensive, but I guess I meant that more in the sense of just seeing the numbers laid out in front of me.

No. Utilities is about ~$40 or 50 per month, depending on how much AC/heat you turn on. More if you want cable in the apartment.

Even as a current student, are all "scholarships" on the FA estimate merit? Because you guys are sounding like it is...I've always thought it was primarily need based. But for what it's worth, my family's gross is usually just under 100k, and I received ~17k in scholarships, if you guys want to use that as a reference.

Thanks again!

I think the financial aid letter (and the talk that was given after the interview) implies that the scholarships are need based. My family pulled in like $140k before taxes I think (not including my income as a grad student), and I got about 5k in scholarships. I have a brother in medical school too though...

17k a year for the 4 years or 17 total?

Heyo! Also on the alternate list and got invited for second look. Hoping that means I have a chance because I reeeeeally like Mt. Sinai. Does anyone know anything about second look? A dress code would be nice, and I'd like to know what to prepare for in terms of interaction with students/profs/deans.

2nd look already happened

I'm pretty sure flyten is referring to Revisit Weekend, which people on the alternate list were invited to. The email didn't have any information about dress code or anything else but I assume they will send us more information about it in the next week or so.

revisit just happened this past fri-saturday

There are two different revisit weekends -- one for the accepted students and one for a select group of people on the alternate list. It's on Friday the 26th.

Yeah, sorry, I meant revisit day, April 26th. Do you guys know anything about it? The e-mail's not very detailed.

I went to the second look that just happened and most people were wearing business casual.

If those waitlisted didn't get invited to the April 26 revisit, should we just give up hope?
