Does anyone know when/if there is a second look day???

I called the school about this, and was told that at this time, there is no second look day set up. But the individual did say that if the school were to set up such an event, that they would notify the students. In my opinion, the absence of a second look day is very disappointing :/

Maybe recently accepted students participating in the "Big-Sib Lil-Sib Program" will possibly have the opportunity to revisit/tour the school if their "Big-Sib" offers to host them for the day? (this is what I'm hoping for). However, I affirmatively responded to the invite to the program when I received the email during the last week of Feb. and have yet to hear back regarding a "Big-Sib" assignment, so we'll see.

Congrats on the acceptance!

Not sure if by "city" you mean Manhattan, but I'm from one of the outer boroughs of NYC, and I do not plan on commuting if NYMC ends up being the school I attend. Living on campus and right next to the academic buildings is much more appealing to me than making a commute everyday (75min drive = no thanks, lol), but that's just me!

Congrats again on the acceptance

Hey guys!

I an cnsidering applying to NYMC, the only thing is I've never hear of this city where its located. How is it like around the area? The community? From what I see on the Internet it looks like a small town. I hope it's not a dull place to live. Can anyone provide honest info about what it's like to live or even attend school here at NYMC. I'm a CA resident.
Thanks everyone!

I'm from CA too but you're right, it seems like a small suburban town and it felt that way when I was there. The area around it definitely seemed dull to me. From what the students there say, they hang out around the neighboring cities such as Tarrytown or go down to NYC by metro.

This is just my impression off of two days though, maybe someone who actually lives in New York can say more about it.

i also saw you interviewed at east virginia, how was that area? community? campus environment?

Any 3rd and 4th year on here that can answer questions regarding how the rotations work?

I just finished my exams.

If you guys have any questions, I'll be responsive this week.

Congrats to all those who have been accepted. Start partying.

PM me and I can answer any questions you have about 3rd/4th year.

In general - it's a lottery system. There are rotations mainly in Westchester, NJ, and NYC - along with a few other places (Ct, etc).

3rd year: required rotations = Internal Medicine (12 weeks), OB-GYN (6 weeks), Psych (6 weeks), Surgery (8 weeks), Peds (8 weeks), Family Med (4 weeks), Neuro (4 weeks).

Valhalla is a small town, with little to do in the immediate surroundings of the school. It's not like it's dead - there are a few restaurants, shops, etc, but surrounding towns have more to do (malls, restaurants, bars, etc). These include Tarrytown (~7 mins away), White Plains (~10 mins away), and a few others all within 10-15 mins away. People tend to go to the city on the weekends (~35-40 min train ride).

Interview Invite today. I was complete around early November. I wanted to ask if at this point the interview is for a waitlist spot? I do not want to waste $$ for only a waitlist spot.

Thanks

nope. nymc doesn't "interview for waitlist spots" I have friends who interviewed as late as the last week of april and were outright accepted.

also of note: there is a lot of waitlist movement at nymc - so even if you are waitlisted, it isn't the end of the world. you still have a big shot of getting in (biggest waitlist movement happens after may 1st and continues on up until a few days before orientation I believe).

Our match list this year was very good. I'll post it once a copy goes up on the website

There are people who commute from the city. To be honest, I absolutely wouldn't recommend it during the first 2 years. It's possible, but difficult, and I would only recommend it if you have a very good reason for living in the city (ie: you are living with your parents for free or you own your apartment). One of my best friends was commuting from the upper east side and ended up moving half-way through first block, and I moved up to Westchester from the upper west side before school started. It is easier to live in the city during 3rd and 4th year because we do some of our rotations at city hospitals.

Congratulations!!!!

Hi all,
Im currently a MSc student at NYMC, and I just got my MD acceptance packet this weekend! :):):):):):)

As someone who grew up in the area and has spent the past two years at the school here is what I can provide to my future fellow classmates:

Don't try an commute from the city or jersey, traffic terrible and only going to get worse (construction on the tap, etc) and parking a huge challenge on campus. Also, you will be adding an extra layer of complication to your med curriculum. I commute 40min each day to campus, and even from a less challenging commute I still find this to be a real pain.

That said, on campus is not to shabby but has its limits like any college appt would. Im looking off campus in the valhalla, hawthorne, tarrytown, white plains, areas. 1br ~1200/mo seems to be the average, going further north that comes down quite a bit. Im currently 40min north and rents are around 800/mo on average... though you're out in the sticks.

There is little in the way of fast food in the area, and by little I really mean none. You have Au Bon Pain in the hospital, a taco bell/KFC down the road about 2mi, and a Wendy's 2mi the other direction on Rt 9. That said, White Plains is, like most cities, totally overwhelmed with food options from $-$$$$$ (i.e. 42 Ritz). Tarrytown is pretty great, but a traffic nightmare around 5pm and it's not too easy to jump back and forth from. There is also Port Chester a few more miles away. Shy of Au Bon Pain, none of these places are walking distance, especially given the highways surrounding the campus.

This is the same for shopping, White Plains has pretty much everything and its 15minutes away given the 287 isn't a total mess. You are also less than a half hour outside of manhattan if you are really looking to shop/eat whatever.

Student groups are really active, you'll see that when you start. As a current MSc student here though, I wish there was more crosstalk between the MD class and the GSBMS, but oh well.

I know this post doesn't reflect it well, but I am really excited about this coming year, my experience with the campus has been limited as I am only a masters student, but it has been more than enough to make me really appreciate the faculty and the college itself.

I can answer questions about the place, events, whatever you can think. Please keep in mind that my experience with NYMC has been as a masters student, and as someone who has grown up in the surrounding community.

I cant wait to see you all this fall!

Applications to dual degree programs occurs after acceptance, and in the case of the MD/PhD, after the first year. MD/MPH on the other hand may be different I dont know anyone in the program but I imagine you can apply at anytime after you've been accepted based on their requirements page. Try calling them:

MS3 finishing up rotations in a couple months. Any questions about the school or the 3rd/4th year schedule in general shoot me a message.

Where are you doing your clerkships, how was that chosen?

Your first year clinical experience, how much time did you actually get to spend doing this, and how did it fit into your weekly schedule.

Thanks!

The majority of my rotations have been in NYC with 2 at westchester. It is decided based on a lottery. The class is usually split in 1/2 on who wants to go to the city and who wants to stay at WCMC. Most people end up happy, but since it is a lottery system some people get screwed. City is good for some things and WCMC is good for somethings, but you'll hear all about it 2nd year.

1st year there is some clinical experience, but it is mainly getting you used to talking to patients. You primarily work on history taking skills with a preceptor and see a few patients every other week. It ends up being like 5-6 hours/month. Then there are small groups every other week that go over H and P skills. I have heard they are trying to increase clinical experience for the first years, but I dont know much more than that. In all honesty, 2 sessions/month is more than enough.

It is also very easy to shadow physicians during your first 2 years. This will give you exposure to things you might be interested in and can give you some idea so you aren't completely lost 3rd year.

We interviewed together! Do you think you'll accept?

It's pretty likely that I will be attending NYMC.
Which circuit were you in? I was in the last one

Here are some things angryamygdala didn't include that prospective NYMC students might want to know about food/groceries:
There's a McDonald's like 7 mins away (Pleasantville)
For all you bakery people, there's one called Jean Jacques near the McDonalds which is quite good. There's also an Hmart with a bakery like 10-15 mins away (Hartsdale).
A ton of pizza and Chinese food places around 5-10 mins away that also deliver
2 grocery stores also around 7 mins away(Shop Rite and A&P in Pleasantville and Thornwood, respectively). both grocery stores are located in small shopping centers.
Candlelight Inn (Scarsdale) has the best chicken wings and is quite popular

And as angryamygdala stated, White Plains is the place to go if you need clothes/want to go to a mall or any major retail store. The Cheesecake Factory is also there

You definitely should have a car or make friends with someone who does!

Optho match is wrong, those are their prelim spots!!

Optho had 5/5 students match:
Mt. Sinai
NYEEI (New York Eye and Ear Infirmary)
University of Washington
NS-LIJ
NS-LIJ

And the IM match also includes a lot of the prelim spots for various specialties. I think Lenox Hill through UWash, then excluding Wake at the end are all prelim-medicine spots.

Whatever, you guys get the gist and I'm surely not retyping that list!!

I know those are the prelim spots, but the list on the website doesn't have the PGY2 placements and I also didn't feel like typing them. The vast majority are PGY1 placements, just take radiology and anesthesiology with a grain of salt because they are primarily PGY1 prelim spots.

Interview invite this morning! Does anyone know if they're interviewing for waitlist spots now?

~3.8, 35, OOS

Interviewed this past Monday
Adcom lady told us that they're interviewing for 'real live spots' and that their wait list is unranked. Good luck!

Interviewed 1/24. Wait-listed 3/8. I sent them a letter of intent 3/5. I do not have any updates to send them. What should I send? Just talk about more reasons why I would love to attend NYMC?

Thanks Guys :)

Ya. But that's exactly what I wrote in my letter of intent. I do not want to repeat myself or bother them.

I would assume that it's similar to most schools and a majority of the movement starts in may.

MS3/4's How would you say NYMC has helped you find: (a) a specific field of medicine you're interested in, (b) help you find a match best suited to your interests... In other words, what did the school provide you with to help you get placed?

Most people enter medical school thinking they want to enter a particular field, but obviously these opinions develop and change throughout the curriculum Would you say you had enough exposure to different fields to foster a meaningful, and genuine interest in a specific career path?

Also, it looked like the photo club contest had a lot of shots from Africa, are there trips like these organized among different groups on campus? The GSBMS students are often locked in our labs and don't communicate as often as we should.

NYMC does a good job of exposing students to the main fields of medicine (Peds, IM, Surg,). There are a lot of amazing advisers in these fields and we always match very well in these fields. Things that are a little more rare (optho, ENT, ortho neurosurg, etc) NYMC provides you the opportunities to seek these out through elective rotations during your third year, but you will get minimal exposure to them unless you actively seek them out. I am assuming that is the same across all medical schools though.
The deans set you up with mentors in your field of interest as well, whose purpose is to guide you through the 4th year scheduling and residency applications.

Since I am only finishing up MS3, I can't comment on part "b".

To answer your second question, you will have enough exposure to different fields if you want to have that exposure. It will all depend on if you go the extra mile to scrub in on surgeries that interest you or talk to a physicians in a field you are interested in. Our rotations are set up for students to do electives during the core rotations to get exposure to different sub-specialties. I assume this is how the majority of people become interested in what they're going to match into.

4th year you can do elective rotations all over the world, so that is probably what you saw during the photo contest.

At this point, I've been neither rejected nor invited for an interview. Can I safely say I'm out, or should I bother sending an update letter?

Heck why not, I still see interview groups walking around, keep in mind many offices are closed for passover so if there is no response it's not necessarily because you're being ignored.

Thanks! Now to craft a letter, lol

Official 2013 Match List: http://www.nymc.edu/Medical/match/2013/results.htm

A) During the summer between MS1 and MS2, the office of student affairs puts out of a list of "summer fellowships" in various fields of medicine. These are doctors that are WILLING to have med-students during a 4, 6, or 8 week block during the summer. You can definitely explore a field of medicine you are interested in during this time. For instance, if you are interested in Surgery, you will be able to scrub in every day and get experience in surgery. Same with neurosurgery, etc. If you prefer to do basic science, I know of a few students that worked with different departments at NYMC (pharmacology, microbiology, physiology, etc), and even got some papers/publications out of it. Also to note, student affairs PAYS you during this time. This is also a great time to hook up with a "mentor" in the field of medicine you are interested in (ex: surgery program director, neurosurg program director, etc)...and potentially continue to work with this person as a 3rd year medical student.

B) Can't answer this because I'm not a 4th year that recently matched. All I know is that the school divides the students up between the 3 deans of student affairs and assigns you one as a counselor for all that stuff. You meet with them during 3rd and 4th year to discuss what you are interested in, what field you would be competitive for, how your board scores are, etc. I've heard from people if you are interested in Radiology, the radiology program director here is an amazing mentor and sometimes makes phone calls to other programs on a student's behalf (but again, this is just what I have heard - don't know the validity of this). But if you take a look at our match list - many students match radiology (so something good must be going on at NYMC for aspiring radiologists!)

C) I would say you get a good amount of exposure to different fields of medicine, especially during 3rd year. During 3rd year you have 7 "required" rotations (Medicine, Psych, OBGYN, Surgery, Peds, Family Med, and Neurology). However, you do get exposure to other fields of medicine - especially subspecialties. For example, during your 8 week surgery rotation, 2 weeks are devoted to a "selective"--you get to spend 2 weeks in a surgical subspecialty of your choice (ENT, ortho, neurosurg, etc). You also get a 2 week "selective" period during your Peds rotation to get exposure to other fields of medicine not in the "7 core clerkship requirements". For radiology, that it is a required rotation during 4th year, and if you are interested in radiology, you would schedule to have your radiology rotation as your 1st rotation of 4th year. I know for EM, St Joseph's in Paterson, NJ incorporates it in their Medicine rotation during 3rd year. I also know that you can schedule to do EM at the beginning of your 4th year. Also, there is a lot of time to do "electives" during 4th year in whatever field u are interested in, and "aways" at institutions you may be interested in potentially matching at.

D) I have no idea about Africa. I mean I know of different students that have gone to Africa for different mission trips, but I personally haven't explored it, so I don't know the details in terms of if it was an NYMC organized thing or not. I do know that the most popular time for students to go abroad is either during that summer after MS1, or during 4th year as an "international rotation". I know many 4th years who have done that in Ecuador, Africa, Costa Rica, etc.

Hope this helps!
