Just got the call from Dr Capers! Was absolutely not expecting it and had actually gone to sleep already. Still in shock and can't get my hands to stop shaking!

For all those who get "deferred decision", don't be discouraged. I received the dreaded deferred decision 2 weeks ago and then got accepted today. Hang in there! It can still happen!

Did you send an update/interest letter between the time you were "deferred" and the time you were accepted?

Trying to get my acceptance!!

No, I didn't send any updates. I had been working on putting together a few updates that I could send in, but I got the call before I had a chance to send any of that stuff to them.

Does anyone know what caused OSU's research ranking to slip from 27 to 39? I remember hearing that it was due to an arbitrary technicality; something about their cancer center research funds counting separately from the medical school.....

Also, any thoughts on Ohio State vs. Case Western?? They are both great schools and if it comes down to these two I will have a hard time deciding.

It had to do with how they looked at the metrics. Before the change in metrics the total amount of funding a school received was a main factor. After the change, the average productivity and fund awards per faculty member was important. We have a TON of research faculty, so it really hurt us, but smaller schools with equal levels of funding did better.

Also, we had a small dip in our average GPA which added to the drop a bit.

edit: I see wildcat and a few others addressed this, my bad, haha. I should scroll down through the entire page before I comment.

Congrats to everyone who got accepted! I noticed that a couple people posted about their interview day experiences earlier - would anyone else mind talking about how the interview day went? Specifically, the interviews themselves (what kind of questions, etc.). Thanks!

I was complete late August (OOS) and haven't heard anything yet. Should I wait it out or send them an update email and hope for a response?

Has anyone gotten an II recently? If so, when were you complete? Congrats to those who were accepted!

also complete early august with no word. really doesn't seem to be a whole lot we can do at this point as things seem pretty sporadic and relatively slow. you're welcome to try and if it works let me know so i can do the same😀

I was asked to apply for the MEDPATH program....here goes nothing...

interviewing 1/7 from CA--tickets around that time are SO EXPENSIVE. boo. I actually interviewed at OSU 3 years ago haha...I wonder how much has changed!

Does anyone know if Dr. Capers is making any acceptance phone calls tonight?

GOT THE CALL FROM THE MAN HIMSELF!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

*end of freaking out. though I've been giddy since 5pm pacific time heheheheeeeeeeeee

And BTW I was deferred October 28th, so for all you deferred peers--there's hope!

I missed a blocked call tonight at around 7:15 eastern time. I do not have an activated voice mail. Does anyone know if the number he calls from show up as blocked? And if he was calling around 7:15pm tonite? Ahhh....kinda freaking out.

Thanks

Yes, he called with a private number, and for some reason I thought I was butt dialed because no one answered when I picked up. He called two more times before I gave up and didn't pick up. Now I have a voicemail I can listen to 🙂 hehhe

Unless if you normally get blocked calls, sounds like it's him. 🙂 Congrats!

I was accepted last night after being deferred on Oct. 29th. Also, I interviewed on Oct. 3rd. Hit me up if you interviewed then!

Congrats new acceptances! Giving some of us deferred peeps hope.

For others, stats of those deferred and then accepted? 🙂

For those of you who stayed with student hosts--how early before your interview did you get confirmation of student hosting? I'm interviewing in January and JUST booked a flight (thank god for Hipmunk and email notifications! Got a cheap flight!) so I wanted to see if I needed to look for hotels in case they can't find me a host

I sent my host request the day I got my II, back in October.

Last year I sent in three letters of intent starting in late April - I was accepted shortly after I sent in my third one in mid May.

So I'm on the deferred list, and the email I got said that I should send update letters. Does this mean that I can send an email saying I REALLY want to go here? Would that be a good update?

I interviewed on a Wed. and they got back to me the Friday before, but I had to call them up and try to find out if I had a host because I hadn't had any communication with them for about a month prior.

It honestly looks like they defer everyone unless you're 35+. What's the deal OSU?

Thanks! I might just check in next week

Anyone have any thoughts regarding OSU's interview? I have one coming up soon and am so excited! 🙂

Dress warm, it can get very cold here. Also, just try to be relaxed and honest during your interviews. They want to see how good of a fit for the school you are in terms of personality, that is a big objective at OSU.

Hah, not right now 😛 I'm chilling outside in shorts.. Ohio weather never fails to disappoint.

Can anyone recommend a restaurant for dinner in Columbus? I'll be here this week and my flight gets in the day before my interview. My boyfriend is traveling with me, and I figured we'd go out to dinner somewhere unique to Columbus (or basically not a chain like Friday's or something) the night before.

Any suggestions anyone? Somewhere delicious and not too expensive. Any kind of food really. Thanks!

Thurman's Cafe (great/huge burgers, featured on man vs food)
schmidts (great sausages/German food, also on man vs food)
Dirty franks (the best hot dogs you will ever have)
Giant eagle market district (has EVERYTHING)

Others have had some great suggestions so far. Schmidt's is pretty unique and the food is awesome. The Potato pancakes and apple sauce are just amazing. Buffet can be hit or miss. Get a cream puff and split it if you go, awesome stuff.

Sushi/Japanase - Akai Hana is the best columbus has to offer. Pretty good but in no way stacks up to west coast/east coast sushi.

Fish Market - the best fish place in columbus and it is very close to campus, I love this place.

Indian - Aab is probably the best indian place in columbus, very good buffet if you can make it but dinner is also very nice.

Cap City - this is more americana, very close to campus and god food but really not that special overall.

As tiedyeddog said, it's all about the fit. So relax and be yourself, they've chosen you to interview because you are already qualified. Don't be afraid to let yourself laugh and make some jokes, if that's your personality. Dr. Capers is really laid back and a pretty funny guy. I think we were all pretty loosened up by the time he got done with us.

I had 1 faculty and 1 student interviewer. The student interviewer basically told me: "I am your advocate. How do you want me to present you to the AdCom?" So prepare to sell yourself well.

I'm glad you didn't put Haiku or Sushi Rock or one of those trendy Short North places over Akai Hana. They're OK, but Akai Hana does much better. The grocery store Tensuke (next to Akai Hana) has a pretty good selection of food too!

Okay, I've decided! Barley's Brewing Company it is. Thank you all for the amazing recommendations! You've all officially made quite the impression on me before I've even seen the school or attended interview day 🙂. I love trying local brews so I'm pretty excited! YUM!

All decent places... but I'd still recommend either Columbus Brewing Company, Elevator Brewing Company, Barley's Brewing Company, or Milestone 229 over all of those. If you appreciate good local brews, that is. And they all have great food, actually - more than just burgers and brewpub normals.

Elevator is great, I will echo your recommendation of it.

I haven't tried any of the others but I have heard good things about them.

I think Sushi Rock outright sucks. I have never had a good experience there.

In the same shopping center where Tensuke, which is awesome, and Akai Hana there is a japanese bakery, I forget the name. Have you ever tried it before? It is down closer to the guitar store in the center. The baker is kind of unpleasant but he has AWESOME pork buns and desert buns. You should try it if you haven't.

Also, on the same theme here, have you tried Min-Ga on bethel? It is Korean, pretty great stuff.

Barley's Brewing Co. was DELICIOUS! And they had great local beers. I enjoyed it a lot. Also tried Jeni's ice cream... dark chocolate peppermint was BEYOND AMAZING. Probably the best ice cream I've ever had! Thanks guys 🙂
