did any one else get an email saying we can check the status of our financial aid using gibson online? they say we can check "beginning in march" so i tried to log in using the user ID and pin they gave me, but it says it's invalid login info. is it just too early?

i tried as well and got the same message.

...and that's it. Today was the last day for Tulane interviews. If you didn't interview, I'm afraid you won't be getting an interview for the class of 2013.

Good luck to those who interviewed and haven't heard back yet!

hey so I know someone ( a friend of a friend, no really) who has not gotten in anywhere but has 7 waitlists. I was wondering if anyone here had any info on the ACP program. I found the website but I was wondering if there was any other insight into the program i could pass along.

the guy probably wont need it ( i mean 7 waitlists, gotta get in somewhere). I would appreciate it.

could be wrong, but I believe it costs 10k, and you can't get financial aid for it. Take anatomy and histology, if you score above the class average you're guaranteed an interview, and of course you can reapply to other schools at the same time and would have time to go to interviews. If you get accepted then you TA for anatomy and histology for the next year's class, and join them.

It seems like a really good deal to me. It's hella cheap compared to a traditional SMP or other "finishing school" for medical school candidates.

While there are no guarantees of getting into any medical school after the ACP, there is a huge proven success rate, especially getting into Tulane's own medical school. Your "competition," such as it is, is a bunch of busy P/F medical students who have way more important stuff to worry about than getting a good grade on a stupid anatomy exam. Meanwhile literally your only job would be to study anatomy 24/7 (if that's what it takes).

Some days I wish my first year of med school had been split into two years as well!!

Just recieved the email with my Tulane username and password! I can access Gibson now.

just logged in successfully with a new username and password they sent this evening (the username is a bunch of numbers instead of my email address as was given in the previous email)

Anyone see stats on this....i.e. how many people matched from Tulane as compared to the national average? How many didn't match, etc?

Not matching to a residency isn't an issue for any american medical school that I'm aware of. It's rare enough that the student messed up if they didn't match.

You can look up how many people matched into each of the major specialties on msar. Tulane had a big chunk of people go into surgery according to that

there's always people who don't match initially, and have to scramble the week before match results are handed out. They didn't say how many we had this year.

There's no telling, from the match list, how many were initially unmatched. And really, the critical number is how many *remain* unmatched, or less-than-fully-matched, after the SOAP. It takes an educated eye to see this, but I count 5 students with only a 1-year placement for residency. Two are Army HPSP students--so their placement is the Army's business, and less of a reflection on Tulane.

That leaves three who are only signed up for prelim years. That's better than many schools, and better than usual for Tulane. But what you really want to see is ZERO of these, because 1-year prelims are at extremely high risk of never finishing any residency, and thus being functionally unable to practice, with all its attendant problems.

And the people who end up in that situation are not who you'd expect. Most often it happens to the students whom no one thinks are at risk of not matching. In fact, it's better to be in the "at risk" group, I think, because the school bends over backwards to help those students, and make sure they don't get left behind. Seriously, ALL of the marginal students in my class matched, and all the unmatched were in the mid-to-upper class ranks.

So it's very hard to evaluate a match list correctly until you've actually been through the match.

acceptance range today. interviewed 3/4. makes 4 waitlists + 1 acceptance now. i think i'm most likely going to withdraw from here

Does anybody know when people usually start hearing about acceptances from the acceptance range?

I don't remember if this was mentioned in my interview day, but does Tulane have any sort of study abroad programs/medical spanish programs for medical students. a couple other places I went to mentioned they had like 6-8 week ones.

just curious. thanks!

I've seen emails go out for medical spanish programs this summer, but they aren't put on by tulane.

There are international rotations for third and fourth years through the school to Latin American countries, including a student exchange between Tulane and a med school in Colombia (several of my classmates have done this program)

So it's very hard to evaluate a match list correctly until you've actually been through the match.
Just to add to your explanation:
Two of the non-Army HPSP people who didn't match were going for very competitive specialties. One has sky high scores but from my experience with him-seemed to have a bit of a stage fright that really worked against him. The second had scores mediocre enough that residents in our own department of that specialty were not surprised by this outcome(although they were sad because this student did work very hard in other areas to overcome her score handicap).
You have to be realistic and incredibly honest with yourself during this process. If you shut down due to nervousness-seek out help for it (cognitive behavioral therapy/biofeedback/pharm/whatever works!), if its "only good" scores-publish like your life depends on it and so on.
I know you guys are making some really tough decisions and "percent unmatched" seems like a great way to trim your school list but I hope Samoa's and my comments help you see that things aren't black and white in this area: it can happen that great students don't match or "ok" students may match into their reach program. It depends on student and context, the school itself isn't nearly so important.

Ah Colombia! sick. yeah I really want to do some away rotations in Latin America, especially Colombia.

thanks for the info

Actually, all of that was very helpful. Thanks for the insights everyone.

Hi everyone!

I realize this is excessively early for most of you that have been accepted to Tulane (congratulations!!) But for any of you who are in New Orleans already and want to go ahead and purchase your 1st year books.... I'm selling! I'm a fourth year about to go into residency, so want to get rid of my books for cheap before I move! It doesn't really matter what med school you're going to - some of these books are essential regardless (for example, Netter anatomy cards, physio, etc). Feel free to PM if you're interested in the books, and I will send you a list of what I have and the prices.

Also, if you're still making a decision on whether or not you want to come to Tulane (I have LOVED it here) and need to know anything about residency/the match this year, feel free to PM as well, seeing as I'm a current fourth year who just matched (I'm from the south, but matched at my #1 choice - a NE program in a relatively competitive specialty).

Thanks guys! And good to everyone still waiting to hear!

Does anyone know if we need to submit parental info to be considered for merit scholarships?

Oh really? When I called and spoke to the financial aid office I was under the impression that parental information only needed to be submitted for consideration for need based...

Glad I already submitted my addendum.. :/

I was under the impression that you only needed to submit your parental information for need-based aid.

Right, my bad, only need parental info for need based. Gotta read the whole question : /

so wait what do we need to submit to be considered for merit based scholarship (not that I will get one)

I called the financial aid office - apparently, they have nothing to do with merit scholarships, it does not require submitting ANY documents, and if it was not on the acceptance letter then it is not forthcoming. This is completely different from what their website says. 😕

Just submit as much information as you can.

Ideally you would fill out all of the required portions of the FAFSA, all of the optional portions of the FAFSA, and the form that comes from Tulane itself. Then you would qualify for the maximum number of federal loans, federal grants, Tulane merit scholarships, Tulane need scholarships, and any other Tulane scholarships.

If you supply less information than that, you might get less than your maximum access to those grants and loans.

Filling out the paperwork can be a hassle. But students loans are a much much MUCH bigger hassle. Pestering your parents can be a pain. But we are talking thousands, tens of thousands, and in some cases hundreds of thousands of dollars that are sitting on the table. Not collecting the maximum amount of information because "it is a pain" is like pushing several brand new BMWs off of a cliff.

The Tulane financial aid process is confused and confusing. Nobody really knows how it works, least of all the people who work in the financial aid office, but somehow it all does work.

Speaking from personal experience, I had no mention of scholarships in my acceptance letter. I submitted the maximum amount of information I could to the financial aid office. I heard nothing as the May 15th deadline went by and I had committed to Tulane SOM. Then in mid June, long after I had rescinded my other acceptances, a letter showed up in my mailbox that said I qualified for not one, but SIX scholarships at Tulane. Some of these scholarships had qualifications, other didn't. In fact I was pretty sure I didn't really qualify for some of these scholarships based on their descriptions, but I certainly wasn't going to send the money back!

I know you guys are asking about what types of financial aid are eliminated if you don't submit a complete financial aid form (i.e. required info on FAFSA, optional info on FAFSA, Tulane's private form). I don't think the answer to that question exists. More importantly, the answer to this question is irrelevant... you try as hard as you can and submit the most information you possibly can, qualifying yourself for as much assistance as you can, and then you hope the money rolls in. To do anything less would be foolish.

I've only heard of one person getting a scholarship offer in their acceptance. Like sazerac, mine just appeared in my Gibson Online award list. Turned out to be a godsend since I only took enough aid to cover tuition. I do not recommend this. Remember, if you get too much, you can always have the school send it back at no penalty (before you get it disbursed).

Thanks so much for your insight! Do most people find out about their awards after May 15th? (If that's possible to predict) I turned in everything a few weeks ago and have had no confirmation that they have received anything.. I didn't know when I should expect log in information or anything.

Although it sounds like this sort of seems to be the norm..

Does anyone know how Tulane contacts those who get pulled off the waitlist? Email or phone call? Going out of the country for a bit but don't wanna miss my chance!

I got an email

Question:

Does anyone know whether Tulane is receptive to 1 year deferral requests? And if so, who do you talk to?

Planning on starting in August, but was just offered an opportunity out of the blue that I'd love to take advantage of for the next year, provided it didn't harm my enrollment.

Thanks!

probably email Dr. Beckman or Dean Kahn/Dean Kahn's secretary.

Would it be too late to start looking for housing late June?

A lot of people on the FB group are looking already. Should I be looking as well, if I'm not starting until orientation?

i'm in the same boat. i'm still on a few waitlists and can't make it down to NOLA until late June to look for housing anyway. right now there are a lot of listings on craiglists to start may 1 or immediately so it seems hopeful but the people on the fb group are making me nervous!

Haha good to know I'm not the only one.
All the listings on FB make me nervous too!

Lol New Orleans isn't going to fill up anytime soon. Some people look for a place the week before classes start.

I'm currently on acceptance range and plans to send in a letter of intent this week, since it's getting close to may. I really really want to go here.

It seems last year there was some movement in March but not many of you mentioned anything this year.

Does anyone have info on when the waitlist movement will start? How many people typically get accept in May? I'm trying to gauge my chances.

Does anyone know anything about the Crescent Club apartments or the Preserve?

Or have any good recommendations for good apartment complexes. I know there has been talk about some of these on the fb group, but wondering if there might be other input on here.

Thanks!
