Accepted just now. Interviewed 1/28.
Congrats on all the acceptances hope to see ya'll in the fall! Can any current med students comment on good/ safe places to live? I would prefer a house rental as I have a large dog. Thanks for the help!
Put on the Acceptance Range last week -- Ugh. Anybody know what the chances of getting in off the A-range are? And how often do you all think I should contact the admissions office to update/restate my interest in Tulane?
Look on the school of Public Health webpage to see what the different concentrations entail. A lot of students do either Epi or Trop Med, but both are more difficult to schedule than other concentrations. Basically you should do a concentration in something that you will use in your career or is really interesting.Just got the MD/MPH application today...can anyone shed light on the different areas of focus for the MPH degree, which is the best, which is most popular, and how you should decide on them?
also if you don't start in the summer before schools (I cannot because I have americorps obligations until July) does that negatively impact studying for Step I
There is a session that starts in June and a session that starts in July. Additionally there are classes that run through both June and July, and intensive classes that run for one week at the beginning of August and during the last week in May. I would recommend signing up for as many credits as possible.Do the summer public health classes start in June or July?
Hey guys I have made a page for our incoming class of students on FB. Feel free to join. I made this site to find roommates etc.

yeah i really want to go as well but the tickets from nyc are 550! ACKI wish I could go, but airplane tickets are running 400+ each, and the wife would have to come with me. Seems like it won't happen.
I just wondered in here to see how things were going for Tulane... 🙂 I'm a current public health student in trop med finishing in August before I matriculate to med school. I don't know much about epi, but trop med seems to be really popular with the med students. There always seems to be several in almost all of my classes. The ID fellows also have the option of taking classes with us.
I can't speak too much to the scheduling, but I do know classes that are specifically for med students seem to be scheduled around their schedules. For instance, I'm in preventive tropical medicine right now, and it's on Friday afternoons. I believe the majority of the class are T1's.
I interviewed on 2/18 but haven't heard anything yet. Today I got a certiphi screening request. I am waiting to hear from 3 schools, so one of them most have requested this. Did anyone else get the background check request without any acceptance/waitlist info?
I didn't get a background check request from tulane until after I got accepted.
You should have heard something from Tulane already regarding your interview... I think. They have fairly quick turn around in general.
Odd...do they perhaps notify by snail mail? I live overseas, so maybe they've sent something and it's just slow. Or lost. Maybe I should call...
Soooo, how are people going deal with the cost of Tulane? COA is about $80,000 a year. Without family contribution or a scholarship that's $320,000 in loan principal. Taking the yearly interest into account, we're looking at around $375,000 (assuming 100% direct unsubsidized stafford loans) by the time we graduate medical school and about $460,000 by the end of residency (assuming 4 years).
What?! How is this possible to manage?

$80,000 exceeds the annual limit on Stafford loans, so the rest would most likely be taken up by Grad Plus Direct Loans.
Assuming zero undergraduate debt, $40K per year in Staffords and Grad Plus loans, a four year residency, forbearance during residency, a $50K income during residency, a $180K income as an attending, no loan forgiveness, and the extended payment plan, the loan would be ~$480K at the end of residency and the loan payments would be ~$3500 per year as an attending for 25 years, or less than a quarter of your gross monthly income.
There are a tremendous number of variables concerning costs (undergrad debt? scholarship? roommates?), repayment plans (standard? PAYE? graduated? forbearance?), and forgiveness plans (employer? IBR? PSLF? state?) that make each student's situation unique. By far the best and most reliable tool for analyzing your own debt scenario is the AAMC's FIRST MedLoans Calculator. There you can enter your own loan and income projections and see a variety of payment options.
