Students here are required to do community service (called service learning as a part of ICM course for first two years). They are all structured and pre selected by the school. There are a lot of varieties, health screening, psych, educational, tutoring, nutrition, hs science olympid, mini med, more public health related stuff, etc. You can choose several and the school will match you

Not exactly correct. You don't have to do pre-selected community service. You just have to submit what you want to do and get it approved. They will approve most anything. You need to do either 10 or 20 hours per year, I forget which.

I doubt whatever was heard about Umb vs Hopkins volunteering is true. Places are happy to have volunteers, and when they hear med student, there is generally a good chunk of trust established. As is true for all personal community involvement, if you act like a jerk, ppl won't like you. My guess is this is probably what happened.

UMB also has a special Medical Spanish class. It meets once a week for the fist two years of med school. But also has an 80 hr community service requirement that you must carry out in a predominantly spanish speaking community for the summer btw MS1 and MS2. It gets you an extra month off 4th year.

Rejected today, OOS. 3.67/32. Best of luck to everyone.

If you guys don't mind me asking, were you guys rejected pre-interview or post interview and were you all placed on hold before the rejection?

Pre-interview, and this was my first correspondence since being complete.

I'm OOS and I was placed on hold and I was complete 11/9. Would it be a good idea to send my fall semester grades to the school, if they really have shown my increasing upward trend (e.g getting a mediocre grade in organic chemistry being supplemented with an A in biochemistry?)

I think so! If nothing else, you're showing continued interest in the school, which counts for a lot.

Woohoo! Another waitlist!

OOS, interviewed last month

>:[

I don't remember exactly, it was early November...week of the 5th maybe?

Accepted via snail mail yesterday! OOS, interviewed 11/5, 3.65/33.

Can anyone comment on what the interview day was like? How were your interviewers and how did you feel coming out of the interview?? Was it stressful, extremely conversational, etc.? Were your interviewers people on the admissions committee? Doctors? Students???

Thanks for the insight! =]

You arrive at the admissions office and meet the coordinators to get your schedule/folder/map/instructions on how to find your interviewers offices. Your interviews may both be in the morning or one in the morning, one in the afternoon.

I had one PhD faculty and one MD. The PhD spent most of the time talking about his research. Then asked me a couple of very general questions in the end. However the MD left no stone unturned. He asked every possible interview question under the sun. I was def sweating bullets! Not sure if they intentionally try to give you a good cop, bad cop experience but I've heard a couple of people say they had a similar experience.

You will also have a financial aid presentation, very relaxed group conversation with Dean Foxwell, delicious lunch with current students who will answer any and all questions you may have, and a student led tour where you will see the hospital, lecture hall, gross lab, the amazing gym etc.

UMSOM is an awesome, awesome place. The opportunities available are out of this world. The students seem very happy (even though grading is A,B,C,D), oh and the hospital iirc is a level 1 trauma center in the medically underserved city of Baltimore. So I can only imagine what a great clinical training you will receive.

Does anyone have the number to the health center where we sent our medical forms? I emailed asking for confirmation they got it but didn't get a reply. I want to call so I can make sure they were received.

UMD SOM MS2 here. There are still interview slots yet. Keep you fingers crossed

Thanks pal. do you know if they are for jan or feb?

Sadly, no idea. My best guess is that Jan slots are all gone and they are filling up feb ones as we speak. Our last day of class is the 19th of Dec and we come back on the 2nd of Jan so I assume the admissions office will be closed for that time, but again that's just an assumption on my part

Just got an II! So excited!

There were only 2 dates available when I checked - one in February and one in March.

I'm in shock that I got an interview here - this is one of those schools that I always stood in awe of but never actually thought I had a chance. I'm over the moon, needless to say.

Congrats! Were you put on hold first by any chance?

Also received an Interview today. Available dates are feb 24 and feb 27. I selected Feb 20th. Good Luck everyone!

Were any of you on pre-interview hold? And if so, did you send LOI's?

I was complete on 10/4/2012 but I was not placed on pre-interview hold. As for the LOI's, I havent sent any LOI yet.

I sent a very well written letter of interest to the admissions dean recently.

So I guess that most of february is filled. I am hopeful for march.

How do you send letters of interest and/or grades to the dean?

How do you send letters of interest and/or grades to the dean?

Write the letter of interest in formal business letter format with the address of umsom. Save letter as pdf. Address your letter directly to Dr. Albert Reece and Dr. Milford Foxwell Jr. (Say Dear Drs.....)

You can email the letter as an attachment thru the admissions email address.

Lastly, for grades, mail in an updated transcript if possible. Also, write out an email copy and send it to the admissions email address. I hope this helps.

Are they receptive to letters of interest?

Thank you so much for the help!

To current and recently accepted Maryland students: I received my letter of acceptance but don't see anything about a deposit like I've seen from other schools....am I missing something???

Mind posting interview date?

Late November interview (28th?)...the letter came last week but I had been out of town.

Maryland does not require a deposit. Hooray!

According to the interwebs all you have to do is return a contract to hold a seat (http://medschool.umaryland.edu/admissions/appprocess.asp)

Not sure how to go about doing that tough, as my interview is not for a few more weeks. Here's hoping I get the opportunity to hold a seat without paying a deposit as well!

got an interview (12/6/12) scheduled for jan 30th. OOS 3.8/29/masters

I was just invited for an interview to U Maryland and have yet to schedule. I'm a California student and was accepted to UCSD already, and am contemplating whether or not to schedule this interview. I've never been to Maryland, have a fondness for the East Coast and originally planned to go there for med school, rather than staying in CA, which I have for my whole life. Comments on Baltimore? Any suggestions?

Well, if you like California you probably won't like Baltimore. The school is great, but Baltimore is basically the antithesis of San Diego. With that said, you should definitely interview because if you fall in love with Maryland, I would love to take your spot at UCSD.

if you really want to go to east coast more than west coast, then sure. If you really love san diego and you would not leave home (and given in state rates), stick with san diego. My kaplan tutor goes there, graduated from hopkins undergraduate. It is a really top notch school too.

Did anyone receive confirmation after sending an update letter? I was put on hold for interview in November, sent an update in December, but never heard anything. Is it their MO to just stick it in the file and not send an email?

Has anyone who interviewed 11/28 or later heard back yet? I think they had said that they would send decisions by early January at the latest.
