I just found that out a few weeks before submitting my AMCAS as I was seeing if any Florida schools were friendly to OOS applicants. It kind of stinks for IS applicants though.

This is interesting. Considering that last year they only interviewed 5% of OOS applicants, it could be a huge turn of events. OOS-ers rejoice!

From UM's website:

"We no longer give preference to Florida residents because the Miller School of Medicine is a private medical school and we no longer receive funding from the State of Florida legislature."

Did this just change this year? I remember hearing about budget cuts not too long ago. I guess this could significantly lower the percentage of in-state residents who are accepted to UM.

Whoa, I just read on their website a couple months ago that they do give preference to Florida residents. I wonder how recent this is? This news gives me hope.

Well if you don't want to put in the effort for the secondary maybe you shouldn't apply here.

My saying that the application is a pain in the ass directly translates to "I don't want to put in the effort"? lol

Just submitted the secondary, good luck to everyone else.

How do we enter coursework? It only asks for the year, institution, and grade. So do we not put a course number, class name, or semester? That would seem silly...

has anyone received a Complete email? I received an email saying that they have received my secondary app and linked it with my AMCAS app, but that was before I had sent in my letters. Since sending in my letters a few weeks ago, I haven't heard anything. Is there any way to check status??

I don't think there's a complete email. The only emails I've received are the one that they linked my app and the thank you email for sending the picture. There's no way to check status but you can always call the admissions office.

+1

I received that email too and since I had everything in already I assumed it was the complete email....but now I'm having doubts.

I called a few weeks ago to ask some questions about the application and about the coursework, they just want what they're asking for. I dont think you should put more info because it'll look like you can't follow directions.

There thank you for sending the pic email also said I was complete, but I send the pic way after submitting everything.

I never received the email saying thx for the pic. I sent the pic 7/25. Should I email them to see if they have received it?

My thank you email never said I was complete it just said "thank you myname." Did anyone else get this?

Ugh this secondary is a killer. It's all in my primary already! haha I always assume it's frowned upon to copy your primary, but did anyone just reuse some of their primary app essays? Just curious - I'm rewriting mine, even though it is a little repetetive.

Anyone know when they typically start handing out II's?

I didn't get this either. I emailed them and they said to me that the payment confirmation was the complete email

is it terrible for me to submit the 2ndary 3-4 weeks after receiving it.. by far this one took the most time and I had to come up with a lot of it from scratch since I didn't want to copy my primary...... hopefully everyone else is taking a long time with theirs too???

I believe the "two week" rule is a mixture of truths and speculation. Few schools place an actual two-week submission requirement. I'm sure many colleges have conducted this in the past, giving more validity to the claim, however it isn't common. Second, I remember seeing a chart that provided acceptance rates for students who submitted their secondaries in July and August verses those who submitted in September and the following months. There was a huge drop off that occurred in late August/early September (when the majority of applicants are actually submitting their secondaries).

Moral of the story:
We are stillin the early to mid stages of secondary submissions.... What is important is to submit your secondaries before September.

I never got a "thank you for the picture" email as well, did you contact them about it or figure out the situation?

Also, in regards to the 2 week rule. Make sure to read every email you get containing the secondary information carefully. There are some schools that have a deadline. For example, Michigan State has a two-week submission from the day you received the email, and Wake Forest has a three-week due date.

I never got a thank you either, but I called the admissions office (mon-thurs from 2pm-5pm for status checks) and was told that my file was complete

I was thinking about sending an email, but I'm assuming that my application is complete (considering what accmd said) and they've just been lax about sending those emails.

So I'm trying to write the "why University of Miami" question and I'm having trouble. (I definitely can't just say that I would like to live in Miami haha)

I have found the "why __ school?" question easier for other schools but I can't seem to find information on their mission (other than their generic one sentence mission statement) or any info on special programs available here.

Has anyone been able to find more specific information? Or are there any students of U Miami lurking around that want to explain why they like this school? Thanks for the insight 🙂
I thought this school prefers FL residents..

I want to go into transnational medicine, specifically surgery. I watched some of the videos about clinical trials going on at Miami and discussed why I would like to be a part of that. Do some research and be honest about what you want, just my advice. Good luck.

Does anybody have any experience with or remember reading anything about sending in the area letters to UM?

So, I feel a little silly but I must have missed the information about sending a picture. Can some kind person explain where that was stated and what we need to do?

It was the last line in the instructions and it says you should email a small passport size photo to [email protected] with subject line "application photograph and AMCAS ID number". Someone didn't read directions, you just killed your patient! I kid. 🙂

Anyone just got another secondary invite email lol? and btw this secondary is terrible.

What do I put if I am the most uncreative person and don't appreciate fine arts at all? Come up with something or can I leave it blank? Also if I never joined a club what do lol?

My email doesn't say "..and AMCAS ID number"...!

derpity derp derp derp.

Thanks for the info!

So my instructions don't mention anything about the chronology (specifics as to listing or giving brief descriptions). Should put something down just to be safe? Or should I leave it as just a list because that's what the application is essentially asking for?

I had the same problem. I didn't list descriptions and just followed my own instructions. I thought it would be weird to provide information that wasn't asked for.

Thank you! Also, does anyone have any problems with the fact that the website is not secure and you have to provide SSN and birthdate?

I had the same issue and contacted them. They said to just make sure to include the dates and number of hours spent

Hey! Yes thank you 🙂

So do you know of any special programs that UM offers (besides dual degree)?
Do they have a focus on diversity/helping underserved communities or more of an emphasis in research?

..also any other input you have that makes UM special I guess.

They have many opportunities down both routes. For serving the underserved, they set up health fairs around south florida (http://umdocs.mededu.miami.edu/) and plan international medical mission trips as well.

Definitely one of the longest secondaries I finished.

As for the chronology portions of the application, if you check the instructions I believe it may have something about describing although I may be in the wrong, I'd have to double check (frankly I'm too lazy to check!)

Very excited about applying here though!

Did anyone else notice that the website is not secure? Just want to make sure it's not only me and I have the legit secondary

I honestly just wrote that I didn't do anything that could be considered fine art, and hoped that the rest of the app makes up for it. Hopefully that's not a deal breaker. 😎

So my app just got verified today (little late I know), and secondaries came flooding in. Mia's however says "the decision to send a secondary application will be made shortly". Did anyone get this when they first applied/how long did it take to get your secondary?

8 minutes, I wouldn't worry too much. I'm thinking it could possibly be automated since my emails were delivered at around 7AM.

So I received the e-mail to complete the secondary application on July 3 but am just now ready to submit it. Is it too late? Is completing the secondary application almost two months after receiving it going to hinder my chances at receiving an interview? Any advice or insight would be great! Thanks!

Does anyone know if the status check page is simply that "acteva order" thing, or is there a direct URL? Thanks!

Ive heard of the two week rule for most schools.... 2 months is kind of pushing it...But ultimately It's your call.

Just a forewarning though, if you've already opened your secondary account there is a two week window in which to finish it according to their secondary instructions: "11. You will be able to save and exit your secondary application only after you have answered ALL mandatory questions. (Mandatory questions will have an * ) If you save and exit, you will receive an e-mail with instructions on how to re-enter your application. You will be able to return to your application for 14 days after it is saved."

Good luck!

I believe there is no status page to check... Oddly enough you can still edit your order/application somehow... I emailed them the picture they asked for and asked for confirmation and all I got was "Thanks!". I can't find a status page anywhere on their website.

It does mention two weeks, but thats from OPENING it, and I believe that if you continuously open and save it periodically then it will not disappear. I believe its just that the order/application will be on file for two weeks before heading to the trash bin if left idle too long. As for the two week rule, I would like to think people are just paranoid, but it could be true for all we know, all adcoms treat stuff differently.

I don't think it's too late... I've had oddly strange luck with schools that I waited forever for to fill out their secondary

I was wondering about that. I didn't receive an email confirming the receipt of my picture and I was thinking about emailing them. Thanks for the info.
