2013-2014 Rosalind Franklin University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I just got small-pooled today. I was complete somewhere around 11/01. Anyone have an idea of how many applicants get small-pooled and how likely it is to receive an II at this point? And are II's given out only after being small-pooled?

1. No. 2. Yes.

We need to keep a tally of "small pool" questions.

I'm interested to know if the Adcom will be taking next week off, meaning that they will have decisions in by this Friday.

Tantacles is right, there is no way to know. But, I remember last year the adcom did meet by the end of the month because that was when a lot of wait list emails went out.

Any MD/PhD applicants in here? Any news? I haven't heard anything, I've been complete since early Oct.

From what I understand, our school does not accept MD/PhD applicants directly to an MSTP program. If you are applying MSTP through AMCAS, we accept you as an MD student and you then apply internally for MD/PhD after the first year.

No one in this thread knows the answer to these questions.

Yes.

Any post-interview decisions for people who interviewed after 11/13?
Merow.

I am a little lost. What is small pool? I see people talking about pools, but totally lost.

I guess I should update here that I received an interview invite from them earlier today, but no talk of pool.

Interview dates are in January (same as the ones posted above). Hope this helps you guys out

Basically, one you pass initial screening, you are small pooled. So out of 6,000 apps submitted, the small pool may be 1,000 and they chose to invite 600 to interview. (# made up)

Does anyone have access to USNW for interviewed/accepted information?

Interviewed 11/18. Accepted just now... does anyone know how much the deposit is? or I suppose it will say in the letter they send us

Rejected today. Interviewed 12/6. Good luck to everyone still in the running and congratulations to those accepted!

I think I will be dropping my interview (scheduled for January 24th) good luck to everyone! And congrats to those who have gotten in!

I paid it last spring but I want to say it was like $100 ish? And it likely isn't drastically different from that. If I recall correctly, you get the acceptance email and then very shortly after (I think it was a few days) they send another email with the deposit info/directions.

Rejected today too, via email. OOS though so may have something to do with method of communication.
Good luck folks.

Buddy of mine was just rejected preinterview. I'm still silence pre-interview pre-small pool.

This was pre interview, sorry. And I was complete about six weeks ago I believe.

My first interview!!
Complete: 8/15
Small Pooled: 11/6
Invite: 12/19

I'd love to talk to any non-trads there or anyone who has pro tips.

Congrats! I'm non-trad also.
I got the feeling that they appreciated maturity in non-trad applicants during my interview.
Overall the interview was pretty standard I think, but if you have specific questions I'd be happy to answer.

Does anyone know if they have a Second Look program here? And if they do, have they announced when it is?

No small pooled means you may be invited to interview

Is being small pooled the same as being put on pre-interview hold?

From what I've noticed so far:

small pool = "we read your application and liked what we saw, so you have a decent chance of getting an interview here"

hold = "we read your application, not too wow-ed, so we're not gonna offer you an interview and instead, put you aside to get re-reviewed later after we review everyone else"

Obviously varies for each school, but I feel like thats the general trend.

At our school, small pool just means you've passed initial screening. The size of the small pool is unknown to all but the application screeners, but it's not small.

Non-cms lovers of efficiency, feel free to quote this answer for the next 1,000,000 people who ask.

Interview was standard with no particular curve balls. This is one of a few interviews that interviewers really did their homework and read the essays.

You should review your appication and essays, being ready to talk about them in depth.

So how is 3rd year set up here? In the curriculum hand-out, they did post the required rotations...do you get a chance to add electives? When they say 9h vs 4h, does that mean 9 weeks vs 4 weeks? Do you have to find electives yourself or do they offer them and you can choose? During rotations, are you rotating with just RFU students or also RFU/Rush/UIC/etc students?

Also typically how many people show up to class (assuming not all 190)?

This is funny, because on my interview day the interviewers were selecting applicants/applications right before the interview started. They read the essays just before you met them.

That explains how both interviewers remembered some of my sentences verbatim in my PS.. It makes sense now.

Everyone does the required rotations 3rd year- no electives. That is what 4th year is for, though, and you will have plenty of time. Also, for instance if you are interested in your child neuro, during your peds rotation you can ask to go hang out with the child neuro people for a while. It usually works out.
As for the handout, the 9h/4h are credit hours. The rotations are actually 8 weeks, 6 weeks, or 4 weeks.
As for electives, there are intramural and extramural. Intramural electives are at hospitals affiliated with the school. The rotations are set up, and there is an internal app service. Extramurals are anywhere in the world, and they are usually already set up as well (though you can always make a new one).
During rotations, you are with different groups for different rotations. Almost all of the time, you are with UIC, Midwestern, and some Northwestern as well.

Thanks eliezer1510, very informative. So if during general surg you want to see a subspeciality of surg, will they let you? When do 4th year electives start?

Looking through last 2 threads for CMS I haven't seen any people who interviewed in December and no acceptances in January. Are December interviews a new thing or maybe just no SDN people had them?

Also a funny post I noted from the 2010-2011 year thread... if only CMS had paid more attention earlier!!!

"Do students at Rosalind Franklin get lockers? I forgot to ask on my tour.
I know it's silly but such things are important to me haha."
