2013-2014 Rutgers University - Robert Wood Johnson Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congrats to everyone who was accepted!

Quite disappointed that I didn't get a call. RWJ is a school that I would have seriously considered, and I don't recall performing too terribly at the MMI. Oh well – perhaps there's still hope.

Congrats to all those accepted! I posted earlier in the thread but not sure if it was noticed. Anyways, I'm a BA/MD Class of 2018 as well and can't WAIT to meet all of you peeps! Anybody from Rutgers or the tristate area? Hope to see you at the accepted student reception!

Accepted! Does anyone know if a deposit is required in addition to the letter in order to hold your spot?

They are not done giving out acceptances yet; the stated date that they would give out acceptances is the 15th, so I imagine they are just getting started early... haha, perhaps I am too hopeful 🙁

are you sure the 15th is when they said they would officially release decisions?... because that's a sunday. i'm pretty sure they started releasing decisions at the beginning of this week, but that's just my guess. i doubt they planned on releasing anything on sunday or the weekend in general

Called them and found out I'm rejected. They said all notification will go out soon so I'm guessing no more acceptances

It what the MSAR says, I figured they were just getting a head start.

Dang, now I'm kind of worried 🙁 It doesn't look promising looking at the old thread

Does anyone have USNew's Interview/Acceptance data?

To any current students, does RWJ give students shelf exams or practice questions during the preclinical years to help students prep for the Step 1?

Did anyone who interviewed on 12/9 receive any sort of decision? I remember one of the admissions officers telling us that our group would be included in this past week's meeting assuming the MMI scores were submitted. I'm just curious to see if anyone actually heard back.

has anyone received the official acceptance letter/packet yet? also, is the brief letter they want literally supposed to be something along the lines of "i accept the offer"?... confused rwj doesn't utilize the internet, but enjoying the lack of a deposit...

Looks like a lot of us are in the same boat... I'll admit that I messed up one of the stations pretty, but people always maintained that the nature of the MMI allows for mess ups ...

I'm solid all around in extracurriculars and have good numbers.

Also still waiting... I think they snail-mail the rejections/waitlists so we may just be dead in the water. =/

I don't get why they don't just email everyone at once and get it over with.

Yup - just write a nice quick letter saying you accept the offer. No deposit is great. Honestly, the Admissions Department works really hard considering the number of applicants each year (and being slightly understaffed since the Rutgers merger)... As for those who haven't heard, don't sell off everything just yet - sometimes, applicants get pushed back until the next committee meeting. Not sure when that will be exactly, but hopefully more people will hear before Christmas. Good luck.

This Admission Office seems to do things in the old fashion or unique way. I think the Dean called all accepted applicants personally.

Has anyone who interviewed 9/16 still not heard back yet?
Also interviewed 9/16 and heard nothing yet. I felt confident about my interview as well but there are definitely more factors involved which is why they wanted to wait until the 15th to release decisions so they can interview a larger cohort. I wonder if all of us who haven't heard definitely means rejection/wait list. I'm hoping the above convo is right and we are "deferred to next committee meeting" but I don't want to get my hopes up haha...

ACCEPTED!! So excited for my first acceptance that I had to make an account and post after lurking for so long.

Interviewed 12/13. Crummy GPA, Strong MCAT, OOS. Complete mid-July

**Edit: mixed up interview date.

Yep, got an email followed shortly by a call from the dean. I expect they had a meeting this morning and will be sending out more this week.

Hey TooFoolForCool, I interviewed on 12/9 and got my acceptance call and email on 12/12. Looks like from above post that they are still giving out acceptances so keep your hopes up and good luck!!

Quick question regarding the letter of acceptance that we're supposed to send in within two weeks - just wanted to make sure that this is not binding? This school is def one of my top choices but I'm still waiting to hear back from other places. No penalty if we send in the letter and have to withdraw later?

Thanks!

apparently my application is in "the very competitive category and a decision will be made regarding acceptances and alternate lists in the coming months"
got a letter in the mail, and the game continues

It is the waitlist.

Alternate listed via snail mail, but I'll be withdrawing due to acceptances elsewhere.

Good luck to everyone else!

Just got my letter in the mail. Got placed on an "alternate list." So I'm guessing the very competitive category is not actually the waitlist.

Alternate listed today... but I'll probably wait before I withdraw. The chances are very very slim at this point that I will go here. With an acceptance elsewhere, there's no way I'm waiting until May or Summer.

I believed I had a moderately competitive application with a LizzyM of 74-75, but I guess the interview is very very important to them.

Does anybody have any idea as to when the next wave of IIs will go out? I assume they're all done for this year. Has anyone received an II recently for next year? Anyone interviewing early 2014?

Congrats to all those accepted! and good luck to those waiting. For those who are accepted, any interest in starting a Facebook group? Start discussing housing plans etc.

received acceptance letter yesterday... letter was dated on the 13th

Trying to decide whether to hold on to this acceptance or NJMS. Thoughts?

You would rather attend NJMS or Stony Brook? Or is it that you don't think waiting until April/May is worth it? I'm in a similar situation with a different school.

I fell in love with Stony Brook and would have likely attended over RWJ anyway.

I'm not entirely sure which school of Rutgers I prefer, but NJMS has several things going for it that fit my particular research interests. With that said, there's only a few schools that I'm waiting to hear back from that I would possibly attend over SB, so the idea of waiting until April doesn't appeal to me.

While people generally defer to USNWR, RWJ is no better or worse than NJMS. In my opinion, they're just different schools with different characteristics.

RWJ > NJMS ...location, reputation,..IMO...glad to see other thoughts though
Is there really a reputation difference outside of USNWR? Plus, I don't know how much Piscataway or New Brunswick offers a "good" location. I know Newark isn't great, but it's got to have its share of bars and a social scene as much as New Brunswick, right?

I'm obviously biased but comparing New Brunswick to Newark is like apples & oranges. The RWJ/NJMS debate comes up every year - both have pros/cons. Though I will say the nice part about this merger is that RWJ is physically on the Rutgers Campus meaning New Brunswick/Piscataway is really a college town and you certainly get that feel - I'm not sure about that in Newark (though you can live in Hoboken and commute into Newark). Someone else hit the nail on the head - outside of Top 20 schools in the country, your decision should be based on cost/location/best feel. Both will have relatively equal academics and you can bust your hump and get into any residency from either of the schools. Good luck to everyone still waiting to hear.

Having spent 6 years at NJMS in Newark, I would avoid going if possible. The school is quite good, but the area is awful. When I was there, it was not uncommon to be a few blocks away from a shooting/stabbing/robbery.

I'm not sure if this was answered yet, but from what I remember I do not think they use NBME Shelf Exams at RWJ? I don't think this is a big deal I would assume the exam questions are similar to board-style questions. Do most medical schools use shelf exams? Happy holidays everyone best of luck during the rest of the admissions cycle !
