2013-2014 Texas Tech - El Paso Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Nice! That's perfect.

I haven't decided on a hotel yet.

According to my friend who is a current student, the school offers a shuttle back to the airport!

Huh - so the school itself gives rides to the airport? In that case I may change my flight lol.

don't want to explore El Paso? 😉

Actually that is a pretty good idea. I am technically a Texas Resident (I have been working at the Texas Medical Center in Houston for the past year plus a few months), but I don't know much about the other areas of Texas. I suppose I should take that time to familiarize myself more with the area 🙂.

ah you work in my neighborhood. very cool!

Anyone willing to offer some advice?

I had to work to help support my family senior year of HS and freshman year of undergrad. My wife is a liver transplant recipient and we've had to cover a lot of the expenses related to this. Also, my father-in-law has needed a live in nurse but can't afford one so I've been living with him to help him during the day while others are at work and then I was taking pre-reqs at night.

My question is if I have cause to write this up in the essay on disadvantages. I feel like this have helped me become who I am and are a part of my motivation for medicine (I addressed the father in law in my PS but no mention of my wife) but I don't want to use this section if it's for those with more significant disadvantages.

The essay asks for personal experiences or disadvantages. In my opinion, what you describe is a relevant personal experience, so I would go ahead and use it.

Hey everyone. I interviewed in El Paso yesterday (8/1/13). Let me know if you have any questions!

We were finished by 3pm and the school definitely has a shuttle to get you to the airport.

After spending the day at Foster I was impressed.

Good luck future docs!

J

Is there a place at the school where I can put my things during the day if I plan on heading to the airport right after the interview day?

Does anybody know what financial aid is like here? Are there scholarship/grant opportunities?

Which hotel did you stay at? And yeah is there a place to keep my things during the day so I can head straight to the airport from the interview? Thanks and hope your interview went well!

Right away,
You guys get a shuttle to the airport from the school. and they also hold your stuff for the day if need be. 🙂

from what I can tell, people in my class interviewed throughout the whole session.

I'm so glad I didn't have to write a secondary app, and I think the questions are targeted to assess "fit".

Good luck yall. (Enjoy your down time)

If someone who has received an II wouldn't mind clarifying, did you receive any other notification that your file was complete besides the email from foster with the subject line "Application Received"?

That's all I received from them, no confirmation that I submitted my secondary.

Also...

I just now received an II! (GPA 3.85 MCAT 27)

Also, both of the dates that were offered to me through Merlin conflicted with another two interviews, but I called John Snelling and he let me pick any Thursday in September, so dont be afraid to re-schedule if you need to.

Now I just have to figure out how to get there.... plane tickets are $500-700 🙁

If anyone has an invite for September 12 and they live in the Houston/ Waco/ College Station areas PM me if you are interested in carpooling!!

Congrats on the II! If you don't mind me asking, when did you submit your secondary? And are you in-state?

Are you flying from Houston? Tickets on Southwest Air is only a little over $300 with tax.

So I checked my Merlin account page to see the status of my application and on the El Paso app, there is no button for "Applicant Status Review" like there is for the Lubbock app. When I click the "Interview Scheduling" button, it says " Previously available interview slots are no longer available. Please contact the admissions office for information on available sessions." Does this mean anything? Because on the Lubbock app, when I click on "Interview Scheduling" it says "You currently have no status at this time. Please check back later." Was I supposed to get an email if I got an interview invite? I never got a confirmation from either El Paso or Lubbock that they received my application.

Sorry if I sound crazy >.>

No you don't sound crazy! If I was in your shoes, I would wonder about this situation as well. I just checked my Merlin, for both Lubbock and El Paso and for Interview Scheduling I get the notice "You currently have no status at this time, Please check back later." I have not received an interview for either Texas Tech schools. So I would possibly think you should call El Paso and check the status of your application. Don't miss out on an opportunity to interview!

I would call because I never got confirmation about anything, my interview times showed up on Merlin and I chose them.

Yep, I tried calling but never got anyone to pick up. Sent an email to their office and got a reply this morning. Turns out Hotmail (don't judge!) is filtering my emails from the Tech schools...but I did get an interview invite for 8/5! My first one and I'm already nervous but excited. Kind of a bummer that it's on a school day (Thursday) but this isn't a bad problem to have I suppose.

So just keep checking Merlin, or allow for your email service to let TTU emails through the filter. 😀

Did you find the email in your spam folder?

Haha nope not even that. I guess Hotmail just hates TTU. Not sure why it didn't even end up in my "Junk" folder. I have them listed as a safe sender now though so hopefully things will get forwarded to my inbox from now on.

For people interviewing at Foster SOM. I am not trying to trash the Super 8...they were very nice and the room was fine. I think I may have bed bug bites, though. I stayed two nights, and after the first night I had about 25 bites all down the right side of my lower body in clusters of 3-4. I checked pretty thoroughly for evidence of bed bugs around the room and found nothing. I can't figure out what else it could be. Just consider being careful with your luggage when you come home. It's frickin' gross...and itchy. A med school interview is stressful enough without a bunch of bites underneath your suit! BLEGH! 😱

I suppose it could also be fleas, mites, or some other kind of arthropod instead of bed bugs. Seriously, I dig the Super 8...no hard feelings. Just want my fellow pre-meds to take care of themselves!

Yikes. I have yet to book a hotel but for anyone who has, are there any other hotels that offer a shuttle to the school? If not, Super 8 might be the one for me...

How exactly does the shuttle work to get you to the school? Are there certain pick up times like every 20 minutes or do you just let them know that you need to head there. I've never used a shuttle before from a hotel first time for everything 🙂

I called them when I was at the airport and they came and got me. Then you just tell them that you are going to the med school the next morning and I think they pick up and drive you over at 7:45. They also took me to the airport afterwards. As long as you give them enough heads up it should be good! The school also takes you to the airport if you have a flight right after with two different pick up times (you sign up that morning where everyone meets).

Congrats all. Looks like they're still on super early apps.

Hey... you shut your mouth when you're talkin' about my Aggies! Haha congrats man, you're crushing it

LOL gotta keep the BU/A&M rivalry alive!

Yeah I'm actually really thankful to have 5 interviews already, considering I got 0 last year.

If you can, switch your date to 9/12 and we can probably split the hotel costs.

...uh what rivalry? Haha

Just booked my flight. Actually managed to get a pretty nice deal although I'm taking some pretty funky connection flights. It's gonna be an adventure

I'm surprised to hear this. What's different this year Gandalf? You're wrecking it so far.
