2013-2014 Tufts University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Has anyone had trouble getting a response from Emily regarding student hosts?
Emailed her last Thursday morning and have not heard back from her since...Thanks

How was the first day of interviews?

Great day! As stress-free as a medical school interview day can be. All the other interviewees were really friendly, the presentations were informative, and everyone from the school was very supportive and open. Best of luck to everyone else in their future interviews here!

Any II lately?
Nothing for me since their e-mail confirming secondary submission on 7/23! 😱

I know it's still early... I know it's still early... I'll just keep telling myself that 😉 But really... commonnnnnn Tufts... you're my last hope to stay in Boston!

Does anyone know if we can use the first essay ("additional comments" one) to put in any updates regarding our EC's, research, etc?

I'd say this would be a good place to do that if there have been changes since your AMCAS submission you'd like to highlight, just don't regurgitate what you've already explained.

Thanks. Yeah I had been promoted in one of my ECs and presented a poster so I wanted to add that on

Have you already gone for your interview? I am interviewing tomorrow.

Hey guys,
It may be an odd question, but how do you know when your application became complete? I've never received an email and now looking at the communication section of my secondary application, I only see that my application was submitted on 7/23.
Is it possible for my application to still not be complete?
I welcome any advice!

I submitted this particular application Sept 14th and received a complete email the same day. Look at the 'Status' section of the online application. What does it say next to the application category that say 'Secondary App Ready for Review'? Mine has a check mark that says 'Your application is ready!'.

Is it just me, or is Tufts pretty vague about the type of student their looking for? Their mission statement is so plain and broad, that it doesn't really give the school much personality. Their website doesn't have that much information about the unique aspects of their program. Sort of making me not even want to apply.

How is that any different than 90% of schools?

The other schools I'm apply to are pretty clear about the type of student that will fit into their mission statement. IE: working with the underserved, or interested in global health or focus on compassionate care etc etc.

Maybe its not different than 90% of the schools, but its different than the ones I've applied to/received interviews at. Med school is med school, but if you're trying to recruit the cream of the crop (and Tufts doesn't have a low stats yield), as a med school you gotta appeal to those folks. Granted, I'm not saying I'm cream of the crop, but ya know.

I feel like 90% of the schools I applied to value research, community outreach, and cultural competence.

Then again, that was my selection criteria but I still feel its a fairly common mission.

Well what I meant was they are "vague" - those are pretty common aspects all med schools want- and all med school candidates should want to achieve; but it doesn't give a very good idea about the unique aspects they are looking for in candidates.

Really? I feel like it's pretty obvious they're really into community service and clinical stuff as opposed to research as evidenced by service learning, required community service and other programs they have available. So, they probably value candidates with a lot of community service experience and experiences working with undeserved populations.

They definitely have a huge global focus-through research in areas affecting millions globally, teaching of the masses, or underserved populations....If you haven't guessed, I LOVE this school!!!!

but I understand what your saying this application process makes it hard to distinguish until you visit a school and see why

So I have an interview confirmed here for October... if I were to add a dual degree program and fill out the application now, it wouldn't have any bearing on my current interview/application for the MD only program, right? They don't consider your candidacy for MD/other until after youve been accepted to MD only, correct?

RocDiva, MDLady, ya'll are right. And this is exactly why I love SDN- its really nice to collaborate and have people tell you what their perspective is- in this case made Tufts come off the paper a bit. Looked more into your examples and just a quick internet search with a different perspective showed me that there was a lot about Tufts I was missing.

And MDLady, congrats on the interview I'm assuming you had there!

No problem. Also check this out: http://now.tufts.edu/news-releases/new-tufts-university-program-prepares-medical

This article is from yesterday and a big reason why I'm excited about Tufts.

Wow, go Tufts! That is actually really neat. I hope they see past my recently research heavy app, and focus on the projects I've worked with the underserved (my) community continuously instead. For real though, I feel like such a butt, because now I'm really excited about Tufts as well! hahah

I applied to the MD/MBA program and everything I read specifically stated that you are considered independently for each program.
However, I always wonder if that's truly the case. They obviously know, when they are screening your application, that you are applying to a dual-degree program so there must be some impact on their judgment of you as a candidate. Whether that is good, bad, or neutral is a question I don't think any of us can answer.

I'm going to chime in and say that TUSM is huge on community service, diversity, and community in general. There is community service learning requirement that all students have to do and they are great at helping students find a project that will match their interests. TUSM students are also required to teach in the community for 50 hours.

Regarding the Service Scholars program, it's a new program that is almost like a counterpart to the Maine Track program. The Maine Track works with rural communities in Maine, while the Service Scholar program aims to work with underserved, urban communities in Boston.... Again, huge emphasis on community and service.

There's also a big emphasis on clinical experience. First years get to go into the hospital around their 3rd week in school and learn how interview patients. There is also the Selectives requirement where students shadow a physician for 8 weeks just to see what it's like. Lastly, second years have the Competency based Apprenticeship in Primary Care program, where they spend an entire day every week at a primary care clinic.

Hope this helps 🙂

Awesome info. Thanks for chiming in!

I think Tufts aims to have a pretty broad range of interests within each class, which may be why it seems a bit generic. In my year, for every student set on primary care, there is another who wants to do research and work in hospital, and both are ok.

Also, in my experience, school websites and statements are pretty useless overall. From the applicant's perspective, it is much easier to know a school by visiting or talking to current students than by reading a mission statement. Moreover, once you are in to any medical school, you can pursue whatever you want. No one will hassle you for doing community service at a "research" school.

You said what I meant much more eloquently than I did, as that is exactly what I was trying to say. (the piece about vague)

But in the process of me whining like a bit of a baby brat, I just got some extremely enticing information from some students, and other prospectives.

SO...very sorry about the whiny crap, but thank you all for being so giving with the information you have about Tufts. Ya'll did a very good sell for them, and I am really hoping to hear from them soon!

I was thinking of sending TUFTS an in the area email for next week. Do you guys think that 1 week is too short of a notice? Also, how receptive is TUFTS to in-the-area emails in general?

Thanks!

Sweet. I appreciate the quick response. Anyone know which email address I should send the email to ?

any idea when Tufts will be sending out its first batch of acceptances?

10/15 is the first day they possibly could, as regulated by the AAMC. Not sure if they generally wait beyond that or not.

edit: upon further research, 10/15 is just RECOMMENDED by the AAMC and apparently not obligatory.

Last year the first acceptance was sent out on 12/7, so we've got a while before anyone hears back.

Multiple schools I've interviewed at have called the 10/15 guideline an "AAMC rule," so I'd assume it's largely viewed as such.

I was told by 2 schools that it is a trafficking rule and that it is actually "AFTER Oct. 15th" so those schools send out decisions on the 16th.

Any II or rejections lately?

Complete since 8/29. Heard nothing 🙁 I'd love to go to Tufts. The MA program is so attractive!

I'm in the same boat! (Confirmed by Tufts Aug. 30)

Everyone should take any dates they hear with a grain of salt. While I'm sure the school would love to have quick turn around after interviews, I would not be at all surprised if they are delayed. In other words, if you haven't heard anything back, don't freak out, it is not necessarily good or bad, it likely means that the committee is running behind. This applies basically all medical schools, most will get back to you later than any date they tell you (the one exception I know is BU).
