"What was the single most meaningful volunteer experience you have had? (150 Words Max.)"

I am having trouble with this question. I used a volunteer experience as one of my most meaningful experiences in my primary application and also mentioned it briefly in my personal statement. I don't really want to repeat it again and I don't have any other meaningful volunteer experiences, any advice?

repeat it. both prompts are asking for one of your most meaningful experiences, I don't see the problem. Just make sure you try to add new information or address it from a different perspective. Why was this the most meaningful volunteer experience?

Thats a different question than the AMCAS 'most meaningful experience' without any qualifiers. meaningful how?

I know this is a question probably reserved for the mcat boards but I was wondering if someone could help me here... Is taking the mcat in early September really too late to be considered for Tulane this year? I'm finished my primary already and am waiting on my transcripts to be verified to do my secondary. I plan to have that done by the time I mcat.

That's too late for almost any school bro..
I believe most schools will consider scores as late as September, but by that time you'll probably done with secondaries in mid September to October.

where can we check the status of our application?

It will be through e-mail.
Just got an update from Tulane today that my app is under review..:scared:

"We would like to inform you that your application is complete and under review. You will receive another email once a decision is made on your application. We thank you for your continued patience with the application process and we wish you success."

Anyone else getting updates? Interviews yet?

yeah I got the email saying I'm under review. Now all I can do is wait

Been under review (notified via email) since 7/17. No word since then.

Current students, does Tulane have any special programs related to international missions?

Just received a rejection 🙁. First rejection of the season....
Sucks because this was actually high on my list. Good Luck to those still in the running.

Rejected.

OOS, 3.3 c/sGPA, 30 MCAT, 3.85 gradGPA.

Sorry to hear that. When were you complete and did you get the news by email or status?

Complete email sent July 11

They email me this morning. Yuck, but I guess it's better than just not hearing for months and holding out hope

Same. Complete 7/11 and rejected.

I'm a little surprised to see they want a maximum of 3 letters of evaluation, especially since they seem rather non-trad friendly. Seems like a great school, I'm getting more excited the more I learn about it.

Where did you get this information from? According to Tulane admissions web site, three letters is their minimum, and maximum number of letters is not specified. According to MSAR, Tulane accepts 3-5 letters.

My letters get sent as a virtual evals packet. So every school gets all my letters....

From the "Secondary Application Instructions" PDF attached to the secondary email:
You should submit a composite evaluation prepared by the faculty committee of your
undergraduate institution. If your school does not provide such a composite, then submit
a maximum of three individual, separate letters of evaluation, two of which should be
from professors of science under whom you have studied and the third from a professor
of your choice.
Where do you see it says three is the minimum? I would like to submit more but the admissions page wording here is confusing:

Tulane's letter of recommendation requirement is as follows: a committee letter, letter of recommendation packet (three letters of recommendation, two must be from professors of science or the third letter can be from anyone of your choice).

Edit: I emailed them, will report back what I hear

Thank you. I see I should have opened that attachment 😛
OK then.

As for how I got the information: 1) most schools list 3 (or 2) required letters, which are the minimum; some will specify a maximum, some won't, but the minimum is always specified - since Tulane admissions web site does not specify the maximum, I thought 3 was the minimum; 2) MSAR says a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 5. Now I see that I was wrong. And so was MSAR 😛 (not nearly the first error I find it in)

So, if we go by the PDF attachment (which we should do), you're right and I'm wrong. I just wish they specified the maximum number of letter before I submitted my primary and selected 4 letters to be sent to Tulane by AMCAS, that is, before the secondary.

I've sent to many letters to a number of schools cuz BU told me one of my letters wasn't signed so its not "official". Anyway I doubt they'd throw out the entire application for something like that. Probably will just read them in the order they receive them.

I agree. They will probably read the first 3 letters they receive.

Complete 7/5/2013
Rejected 8/7/2013

OOS, 29 MCAT, 3.53 cGPA, 3.33 sGPA, 2+ years clinical research at a top hospital in nation (class of 2011 college grad). I knew my numbers were low for this school, but thought all my research and clinical experience would help make up for it.

I have similar stats and clinical research experience as you, and got rejected as well :-( Bummed.

I guess they really look for those high MCAT scores....gahhh

Sorry to hear about the rejections. What was your mcat if I may ask? Tulane seems to favor the high mcat lower gpa crowd.

yea according to MSAR their 10-90% MCAT range is 31-36

pretty severe
seems like if you got under a 31, chances are youre not getting an interview

Rejected, boom, the first one is always the hardest

Complete 7/17
OOS, 31/3.7

Rejected, complete a while ago, 37 mcat, ~3.6 c, ~3.8 s gpas, non trad. Have to say I'm very surprised. I've heard Tulane likes high mcats and non trads so I considered this somewhat of a safety school. Guess it just goes to show there are no guarantees in this process and applying broadly is really important.

You get half off of the secondary cost with FAP.

Apparently if you were not granted fap before your primary app was submitted, they do not even grant you this. I was told to pay the entire supplemental fee.

uh that might be why you got rejected, considering your MCAT they probably figured if they took you, youd still end up matriculating elsewhere, and by your own admission it was a safety school, so theyre probably right

Haha. I always wonder how much truth there is in this. It makes sense somewhat...I just want to hear that from an adcom.

LizzyM of 78 here and I got rejected this morning. I wouldnt worry too much about what this signals for your app.

I work with a SMP program coordinator, and they try to get their students into Tulane Med. Apparently, last year, the admissions director told the SMP director to not send them any applicants with a MCAT score under 31 because they will not be considered.

Yuck! So many rejections already! I have not received a secondary yet (still waiting to be verified).

Should I even bother?

I have a 28 MCAT and I'm fresh out of undergrad :scared:... But I am a current AmeriCorps VISTA member with lots of other community volunteering stuff.

Which one is going to win out? lol

Also, is it true that the fee is waived if you're a current AmeriCorps member? 😍 (or do you have to be already finished with your service?)

Was it confirmed that Tulane screens? Idk if I'll fill out the secondary either if I get it...

i mean realistically if the fee does get waived then theres no harm in filling out the secondary. your MCAT is low and that seems to be killing everybody on this thread. tulane is putting down the rejection hammer on <31 MCATs

Unless your fee is waved, I would not apply. Your MCAT will result in pre-interview rejection. This is a very expensive secondary so just save your money.

It's crazy how selective Tulane is, especially considering the almost 60k per year price tag. 👎

I didn't know this until a friend of mine told me Tulane considers itself an ivy of the south (talking bout it's undergrad).
