2013-2014 Tulane University Application Thread

Can any current students comment on doing the DeBakey scholars program vs just getting involved in research. Pros/ Cons of each?

I'm not doing the program, so all I know about it is from a lunchtime talk I attended for the free food. The DeBakey program has a little bit more formal structure to it than independent research. You're expected to work on a project starting 1st year, put in plenty of work over the M1/M2 summer, and finish everything up over the summer or during early M2 year. You get a nice mention in your dean's letter. You could probably get the same thing from independent research. I don't think the DeBakey program is going to be enough to sway anyone's opinion on the school, and if you're interested in research you'll learn more about the program during the first few weeks of school.

Has anyone who interviewed on 11/11 heard back?

I interviewed on 11/11 and have not heard back yet. Seems like those from 10/28 were the last to have heard back so far. Is there anyone who interviewed between those 2 dates?

Gosh I hope I get a response before Christmas. I interviewed on 11/22....

Interviewed 10/28 and still waiting. Through some random emailing, I got ahold of Dr. Beckman, the Assistant Dean of Admissions. She mentioned that application processing is a bit behind so don't get discouraged if decisions take awhile!

Also interviewed on 11/11. Still waiting.

Interviewed 11/11 and was put on the "Acceptance Range" list this past Monday, the day before my birthday. Quite a gift 🙂

3.5 GPA
32 MCAT
In state (In New Orleans, actually)

Thanks for creating an account just to post this 😀

I happened to have read your blog before my interview and it helped calm my nerves. Hope good news is heading your way!

Can anyone provide more insight on the Acceptance Range status?

Rejected the other day, complete late October. Oh Well! On to the next one! 🙂

I feel Tulane lost my app...complete since mid September, silence since then. I just want to knowwww

Interviewed on 11/11 and accepted on 12/11! I'm so excited.

Any idea on how long it takes for the official letter to arrive?

Just heard from a friend that faculty should still be working up until the end of this week before they take off for holiday break. So crossing fingers they reach some more interview decisions by Friday (which will be exactly 4 weeks since my interview).

Got my fingers crossed too, and I haven't had it nearly as bad as you. It's only been a week for me but I loved this school so much that I'd rather be crushed sooner rather than later if I have to be...

Just to see where I'm standing, did Tulane hold any interviews on 11/15 or 11/18?

Welp, there goes my hopes of getting a decision by the end of this week. See you all after the holidays 🙁

I know someone who interviewed on 11/28 and found out already...so I don't think it necessarily is going in a completely structured order by interview date.

interviewed 11/15, Acceptance range email today. How much movement is there with Tulane's waitlist?

Acceptance range 🙁. I think last year no one from acceptance range got in. Is that true?

Yet the email says "the great majority of applicants are placed into the Acceptance Range category" - geez, they really sugarcoated it...

To be fair though, last year they had too many acceptances last year.

Random thought... anyone notice on MSAR that tulane takes 102 MD/PhDs out of 188 matriculants? Typo?

The MSAR doesn't give a statistic for the number of applicants accepted (because "matriculated" is only a subset of "accepted"). I think it means there were 102 MD/PhD applicants.

I would think they're saying that there were 102 MD/PhD matriculants then? If it's matriculant, that's a HUGE number. MD only is a minority now?

Definitely not 102 MD/PhD students, I've only met 1 in my class so far. I'm guessing that is only applicants.

It's true. I heard that last year they handed out the usual number of acceptances, but less people than usual declined their acceptances to go to a different med school. As a result nobody got in off the waitlist and we still had a bigger class than usual. I don't know if things will change for this year.

Congrats!! If you don't mind my asking, how did you think your interview went?

I thought the interview went relatively well, not sure how much I can say about the clinical scenario but they do offer you feedback at the end of your session which I was really impressed by - no other school is that transparent about how you're doing in MMI-like situations.

The faculty interview was very conversational, we talked about Tulane's strengths (serving the underserved, school of tropical medicine, global health) and how they fit my goals, and about medical education, current events, etc. I think if you can show you did your research on Tulane and are excited about the school, that goes a long way. The student interview was over lunch which was a little awkward - you're eating and then the student has questions they have to ask you and a form to fill out. But other students told us that although the student interview is really important, it's more about seeing how you interact with your peers as opposed to grilling you on your ECs, if that makes sense.

Hope that helps!

Acceptance range... sigh.

So based on looking at this thread vs. last years thread, it seems like theyre are a lot lot more acceptance ranges and less acceptances at this time this year then last year. So perhaps acceptance range aint that bad. Anyone one to confirm/ refute this?

I really hope so. Loved this school too.

Does Tulane have a second look this year? I heard rumors that last year Tulane had its first second look and because of that, more students were more enthusiastic about taking up their acceptance offer. I was mistaken in believing Tulane gave out more acceptances last year, rather they gave out the same number but more people took the offer due to the second look.
