Can someone help me get added to the Tulane class of 2018 facebook group please?
 
Does anyone know how I would go about withdrawing my application from the waitlist? Do I send an email or write a letter?
 
Hey y'all, trying to decide whether to attend Tulane, LSU, or another school out of state. I'm leaning towards Tulane, but I've heard, from several people, that there are a few too many medical students in NO and that clinical rotations can suffer as a result (i.e., too many people for too few opportunities.) Any third or fourth years want to comment on this? Also, with the new University Hospital being finished within the year - LSU obviously is taking point on that, but will it be fully open and available for Tulane students to rotate through as well?
 
If you want elbow room you have the option to do all your core rotations in either Baton Rouge or some of the other towns in Louisiana. In Baton Rouge you'll be competing with maybe ten Tulane students on their core rotations in the entire city. If you take advantage of Tulane's rural track you'll probably be the only med student in the entire hospital for some of the time. I don't know about the university hospital, but the new VA hospital should be finished long before you start your rotations, and they'll probably have some spots for med students there.
 
There's actually LSU students at one of the hospitals in Baton Rouge as well. Seems like LSU uses Our Lady of the Lake, and Tulane uses Baton Rouge General, but there's some surgery spots at OLOL.
We'll at least be doing all the rotations we do at interim LSU hospital now at the new university hospital. About to start 3rd year so I can't say if it's crowded with the other med students in the city, but I haven't heard any complaints. There's also students from the Oschner-Queensland med school program out at one hospital that we can rotate at, not very many though. Don't hear much about them. I hear they kind of stand back and don't do much.
We do get sent all over the city, and sometimes outside of it. For example, I was told there's very few psych spots in the city so unless you have a child it's likely that you'll be sent out to Mandeville or Jackson. Bobby Jindal keeps privatizing and closing hospitals so there's not a lot of psych services around in general, much less ones we can rotate at.
When Tulane sends you more than an hour away for a rotation they put you up somewhere. Idk if all that will change when the new University hospital opens or not.
 
Financial aid, they call it! I'm not impressed... and will be withdrawing to instead buy the majority share of Google... and the Cayman Islands.

Yeah, Tulane is expensive. I just did the math and figured that at $60,000 of tuition x 190something accepted students, plus $125 x 10,000 secondary fees, Tulane raked in about twelve million dollars from my class. I'm beginning to think I could start my own med school for that much money. I'll undercut Tulane's tuition by ten grand, accept 200 med students, and only charge them $50,000 each. I could probably hire enough professors to teach the classes for a million dollars, rent a big lecture hall and anatomy lab for another million, and find 33 cadavers for another million. Then I just have to find a couple of hospitals that want some free slave labor so I have someplace to send my students to for clinical rotations. When all that's done, I'll have made a net profit of seven million for the year. According to my calculations, that will be enough to pay off most of my student loans once I'm done with med school.

So, anyone want to save $10,000 and apply to America's most prestigious nonaccredited medical school, the Sawbones University School of Medicine?
 
I just got another email for the summer biochem course. Can anyone comment on it? Is it helpful? Worth the investment?

I'm working as a clerkship coordinator at the University of Utah SOM before I start med school, in case you need any help setting up student rotations in your new med school.... 🙂
 
Okay, I'm putting you on the faculty in charge of clinical rotations. I can't pay you just yet, so you'll earn your salary by collecting commissions from the hospitals based on how hard your serfs--I mean 3rd year students--work. I'm sure you can motivate them appropriately. I still have an opening in the cadaver procurement department if anyone else wants to join the faculty.

What are the specifics surrounding it? To be honest I don't remember that e-mail for a summer biochem course last year, so I can't really speak much about it. However, I would imagine that you would still be required to take biochem during the T1 year with the rest of your classmates? (Please correct me if I'm wrong on that).

If that is the case, I'm not sure it would be worth it unless you are truly worried about not being able to succeed in biochemistry during the school year. Biochemisty is pretty brutal no matter what (even people with a lot of undergrad biochem) due to the nature of the nit-picky lecture material/exams. If anyone else in my class (or older) wants to comment on this, that might be helpful. However, after watching biochem unfold throughout the year I definitely wouldn't have spent my summer before T1 on that subject, ESPECIALLY if you are going to have to take it again with your classmates - I can't imagine anyone (at any med school, for that matter) who would want to do that class twice. It is sure not the reason why most came to med school.

I do, however, know that they are lengthening the biochemistry course itself for the incoming class. They are not adding any more material, but after watching my class struggle with the extreme time crunch they are stretching it back out. (This year, they tried a new curriculum and biochem was condensed from 6 months to 3.5 months - which definitely made certain blocks of our T1 year way easier and others way more brutal than the classes before us). That being said, I think that should make it a bit easier to get through the tedious course itself, even if biochem isn't your favorite subject (sure as heck wasn't mine).

did anyone get a 2014-2015 academic year calendar for MS1s? I'm just trying to figure out when classes start, when the white coat ceremony is, etc.
 
There will likely be orientation stuff on the Friday and Saturday before white coat. And then the Monday after there's registration and orientation, then class on Tuesday? I don't remember if class started on Tuesday or Wednesday.

I love Tulane but I just can't justify the price... I'll have to vacation in New Orleans regularly! :\

Just withdrew from here. I'll always have a soft spot for Tulane and New Orleans -- got my M.S. here, it's a fantastic city. You all are going to have an amazing 4 years ahead of you 🙂
 
I have two rooms for rent from June 4th to July 8th. These would be ideal for any students who want somewhere to live short term while they sort out a more permanent place to live for the rest of the year. I can be somewhat flexible on the dates. $300/month each. I'll be gone during this time, so you might have the house all to yourself. The house is in Upper Bywater, a 10-15 minute drive from the med school and about 5 minutes from the bars and clubs on Frenchman street.

I also have a room for rent for next year. You'll be sharing the house with me and a T1 who I haven't met yet, but I'm sure is a cool guy. There's fresh paint on the walls, the floor has just been refinished, and the bathroom was completely remodeled. Gunners welcome. If you want to party you'll need to do it out of the house. I'm still remodeling the rest of the house, so you'll need to be all right with some sawdust. Your room is finished, though. $400/month includes all utilities and internet. I can give a discount on the first few months if you start in June.

Also, if anyone needs a place to stay for a few days for free, let me know.
 
Anyone know if we can expect any movement from the acceptance range list soon?

Missorleans did a good job covering the gist of it, I did want to add that for Family Medicine basically everyone but very few get sent to remote/rural practices. I was 2 hours away in Mississippi with another student, we stayed in nice clean rooms at the hospital. Rolled out of bed, went for a run, got an egg and cheese biscuit -all within 50 feet of where I had to be for the morning. It was a great experience and I feel it was worth the drive. The closest site outside the city is like 40 minutes out I think, and I didn't want to touch that commute.
As far as hospitals we rotate through: Tulane University Hospital Main and Lakeside, University Hospital (I've been told repeatedly that the split between LSU and Tulane at the new one will be like 50/50), VA Hospital, Ochsner Hospital (Main one on Jefferson Hwy for sure and I think Baptist too since we do Ob/Gyn with them), East Jefferson Hospital, West Jefferson Hospital, Mandeville and the one in Jackson (psych).

The most "med student crowded" rotation is probably Emergency Medicine because Tulane does not maintain its own program and we rotate with the LSU one. The rotation director does an a pretty darn good job at keeping number of medical students per shift pretty low and we typically get 2-3 beds assigned to us. That being said, some days/nights are really slow and you'll get like total of 2-3 patients in your beds in the entire shift, but thats not really due to overabundance of med students. At least you got someone to keep you company then. Haha.

I would say that's a good sign. Last year it was mid-June before we were anywhere near not having to over-enroll. Keep your chin up guys!

Wait I thought they did over enroll...the 2017 class is pushing 200 easily between over enroll and 2016 people dropping down a year. Having said that they were probably waay more selective this year in acceptances and I would assume actually use the waitlist
 
Is anyone still looking for housing for the summer? We are looking for roommate #3 in a furnished house ($500 not including utils)

I didn't say we ever made it to that point, just that earlier in the process we were "overenrolled" by a larger margin.
We were more selective.
 
Hello all, super excited to be a part of Tulane (and so soon!)!! Would any current students be okay with me either sending them a PM or email (or FB)? I'm looking into signing a lease in the next couple of weeks (I'll be living by myself) and would love some input from someone that's actually there. I also have a bunch of other logistical questions and would appreciate any help. 🙂 Once I'm down there, I'll thank you by taking you out for a drink and/or inviting you to play with the cutest/friendliest dog you'll ever meet. 🙂 Thanks in advance!!

I just called the Admissions office and she said there hasn't been much movement off the waitlist and currently, they're full, so it depends on if people withdraw their application. In other words, I don't think it's sounding very good at this point.. 🙁

She said "there hasn't been much movement," so I'm interpreting it as there was a little movement and the class is full now, but I never explicitly asked her to confirm that there has been movement. But maybe she doesn't have the most up-to-date information and maybe I'm still in denial that there might be more waitlist movement lol I'm going nuts

Tulane does not drug test incoming medical students.

You do have to pee in a cup between MS-2 and MS-3, but it is unclear if any drug test is run, or what is done with the results if they do in fact test it.

If any readers are concerned about substance abuse, the topic and what to do about it is covered in MS-1 orientation.

Well, Tulane just sent out a genetics grad program (probably accidentally) showing emails for the entire waitlist. Pasted it into Word--5 pages of names, row count is 243.
