2014-2015 Creighton University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The interview is super relaxed. As most people say, it's really just a conversation to see if you'll fit well at Creighton. One of the first things my student interviewer said to me was "I don't care about your grades and scores because if you've made it to the interview, you're a strong enough student to go here." It's an awesome school and all the students seem really happy there.

Also, I did the student host program and would recommend it to any future interviewees. My hosts were extremely nice and welcoming and it gave me the opportunity to talk to way more students about their Creighton experience than I otherwise would've had.

Hi! Did you stay for the "Dutch Dinner?" I'm trying to schedule a flight that leaves at 7:30 pm on Friday night- not sure if I should wait and fly out the next morning so I can attend the dinner?

I did stay for it (because my flight was the next day) but it won't affect you if you don't go. It's just an opportunity to hang out and have a beer with M1s. You'll meet a ton of students during the interview day regardless of if you attend the dinner or not.

They interview through the spring too right? I am still without an II (anywhere) and thought I had a good chance at Creighton. Now I'm starting to worry that I'm in trouble....

It's still fairly early! I wouldn't panic yet...right when I was starting to fret, I got my first II! You just gotta have faith. The hardest thing to do is not worry, but it really does get easier when you distract yourself with either studying, ECs, or hanging out with friends! When you least expect it, you'll get that lovely email in your inbox.

You've got this!!! :highfive:

Emailed them an in the area notice about two weeks ago and still no response. Anyone else have any luck?

Do you guys think it's too late to send this school my AMCAS? 3.2/30 URM

No but you should request your secondaries ASAP so you can have them complete by the end of September. After that you kind of would be really late. Your MCAT is decent and your URM status should really help

Does anyone know if Creighton is responsive to "in the area" requests?

Hi! I am an in-state student and I have my interview October 3! My secondary was completed 8/21 and I got an II 9/13. I live in Omaha, so if anyone has any questions about Omaha, just let me know!
I'm super interested in Creighton! Looks like an awesome school. Still waiting for an II, OOS, secondary submitted 7/10, Lizzy M ~70 (still haven't received any II from any school with most of my secondaries submitted end of June to beginning of August. It's starting to make me think my e-mail is broken.. :bang: Only two declined offers so far, and I had to log into those secondary accounts to see them..)

I've never been to Nebraska before, and if I end up going to Creighton, where are some areas to avoid living? There's a place close to where I live called Rose Park that has super high crime (ie: a kid was shot in the leg in his bedroom because a gun went off outside and through his wall. Same week a gun went off in a parking lot and hit someone standing in their kitchen..) but they occasionally on renting websites there are housing listings that look nice from the outside and doesn't really represent the area, so I don't want to end up in the 'Rose Park' areas of Omaha 🙂 I have a wife and young daughter, so the quieter / safer the better. 👍

So where do med students typically live? And what is the cost of living like?

That's a difficult question to answer because I've always lived in the Southwest part of Omaha, so I'm a bit biased (Southwest Omaha is the "newer" part of Omaha), but honestly, Omaha is a safe city. Going to UNMC I have realized that the area north of Dodge near 20-42 streets tend to be on the news the most for crimes, but Dodge Street itself is a very safe street to live off of (it's sort of like the Main Street of small towns - north Omaha means north of Dodge, south Omaha means south of Dodge). Dundee and Elmwood are amazing neighborhoods near 72nd/60th and Dodge. It's the more historic part of town and there are a lot of parks nearby. Creighton itself is located in Downtown Omaha, which is also a nice place to live, though among the more expensive (for obvious reasons). There are also not many houses there, but more apartments. That said, there are several neighborhoods close to Creighton, but I don't know how safe they are (not saying they aren't safe, I've just never been in that area). But if you're looking for quieter, the more west you go the more suburban everything gets. The midtown area (which is actually pretty close to downtown and not really midtown Omaha at all) is a growing area that has become a very nice place to live. Really, Omaha as a whole is very safe, but if you pick up the Omaha World-Herald if you come for an interview you'll get an idea of where crime happens more typically in the city. It also depends how close to campus you want to live. Papillion is a bit south, but it's a nice town as well. Not sure if this will help, but here's a list of the areas of Omaha: http://www.visitomaha.com/visitors/areas-of-omaha/#.VCXCC0uGods

I hope this helps a little!

Unfortunately, I don't know any current Creighton medical students, so I am not sure where they tend to live, although there are many apartments nearby the university (and more being built) so I am guessing they would tend to live fairly close to campus. The cost of living is extremely reasonable (of course depending on where you are coming from and where you want to live). Obviously, downtown is more expensive, but I have a friend who is living in a two-bedroom brand-new apartment building on the top floor (higher ceilings, more expensive) and he pays about $600 a month. Of course you can live in a ritzy apartment downtown or at Midtown Crossing and pay much more than that, but for student living I would say about $350-500 is the average range, but it depends on how many roommates and house vs. apartment and where in Omaha. There are definitely less expensive places.

But, I love living in Omaha because compared to other cities (yeah, Omaha is small, but it's still a city!), it's cheap, safe, and there's plenty to do.

This might be a ridiculous question, but is anyone planning on going to the Open House offered on 10/4?
I submitted my secondary in the beginning of July and have not heard back about an interview at this point in time. I have below-average scores (sGPA 3.7, cGPA 3.6, 29 MCAT) but excellent ECs that align with the school's mission/values.

My thought is that going to this event and potentially meeting an AdCom might help my chances for an interview. It is about a 6 hour drive for me, but I will absolutely go to the Open House if it seems like an advantageous move. Anybody have any thoughts on the matter?

Additionally, has anyone attended the Open Door one-on-one sessions with an AdCom member? It's offered on most Thursdays-- any feedback?

I'm going to the open house, but I live in Omaha so it's not an issue for me.

The area by Creighton isn't actually dangerous (the overwhelming majority of Omaha is safe), but it's not quiet or beautiful by any means. If you have a wife and daughter and want to live somewhere pretty and quiet, you'll want to be about 10 to 15 minutes west of Creighton. The exception to that is the Dundee area, which is close and nice/safe, but the prices are more expensive. The homes are gorgeous and very family-friendly, but the apartments will be full of college students. Safe, but kinda noisy. If you want a more suburban feel, you'll be looking at around $650 - $850 for a 2-bedroom apartment, depending on finishes, square footage, and if you want a washer/dryer in your unit. I live in a 2-bedroom, 3 story townhome and it's $920 a month plus pet rent. 🙂

I will be attending the Open House on 10/4 and have identical stats. I submitted early July, as well... Hopefully this week brings us good news! I have the same thinking. Let's just say it can't hurt our chances and it will allow me to learn more about the school IF I am lucky enough to get an II. It's about a 4 hour drive for me. I haven't heard about the Open Door one-on-one sessions. Seems like a great opportunity!

EDIT: I submitted early September, not July. I have a feeling I won't know for a while.

So I am looking for the School of Medicine on google earths but I cannot find the building. Is it in the hospital? Or in a separate building?

Hey thanks so much! My wife is really good about finding housing, as long as we know which areas to look in. Now, I just need to get my II!

Is it too early to send updates? I know this school is really receptive to them, but I'm not sure if it comes off as pushy this early in the cycle

So question, when sending an update, do you just address the admissions committee and write it as a letter? I know this is kind of a dumb question, but I just wanna make sure I do it write... Ha. For example, do you think they'd want a list instead of letter format or does it not matter?

I don't think it matters I just listed the new update without putting it in a letter format.

As others mentioned, there are really great places to live that are within 10 minutes of campus. Going north of Creighton more than two blocks from the edge of campus at night probably isn't a great idea but the Dundee/midtown area would be great, especially if you have a family. I don't think it will be too pricey to live in Dundee as my fiancee and I lived in a great 2 bedroom town home in that neighborhood for slightly less than $800/month and had great amenities and walking distance to the great bars/restaurants of the neighborhood. I would highly recommend Dundee if you are looking for a family-friendly atmosphere that has tons to offer and is a 5-10 minute drive to campus. It may cheaper to go further west but you'll be more removed from the parts of Omaha that have the most to offer and it gives you a better feel for the city, in my opinion.

complete since 7/13... assuming silent rejection
Im OOS with a 29/3.72 and I've been technically complete since 8/3, but didnt get my second MCAT scores until 8/26.... Heard nothing yet except for that open house invite (which I wont be attending). Really hoping this doesn't mean a "silent rejection" for me-- Creighton is my very first choice for med school, I love its mission and the students seem awesome. I feel like I fit really well with their values. I really enjoy service and have a ton of hours on my app, which I heard they like. but I am starting to worry. BUT I know it's still "early." What I wouldn't do for an II though!

Does creighton put applicants on hold?

they LOVE that non-medical service. a big reason I didn't get accepted by them last year was because I didn't have much of it- it's a deal breaker apparently. I haven't heard from them yet either (though I was complete almost a month after you) but im keeping faith. you should too, especially if you have a ton of hours. im sure you weren't silently rejected. they interview until like march or early april I think. they like updates and phone calls. they have that open door thing on Thursdays, and Dr. Quinn is pretty much the man, hes a great guy to talk to.
