Essay #1: What have you done to make your community a better place? (400 Words)

Essay #2 (Optional): Is there anything you want the admissions committee to know about your qualifications for medical school that is not already represented in your application materials? Note: This space is provided for new information only, not to promote qualifications already highlighted in your other materials. (400 Words)

Essay #3 (Optional): Please explain any gaps in your education, if applicable. (400 Words)

Good luck to everyone applying! :luck:

I heard this was one of the easier schools to get into since it started up a few years ago. That's what I'm counting on! 3.6cGPA, 3.5sGPA, 31MCAT. I only have 30 hours hospital volunteering, but I got 1 publication from my 2 years of research. Only 20 hours shadowing though.

This place is going to slowly but surely become one of the top medical schools in Michigan!

That's what I heard as well. I'm OOS too, so I hope they are open to that lol

I will be starting here this fall! I didn't know what to expect but I absolutely fell in love during the interview day. If anyone has any questions, let me know!

Also, I don't think any school is "easy" to get into.

Also, keep an eye on this link once secondaries start coming out:
http://www.oakland.edu/medicine/admissions/interviews

They have an "interview tracker" on the right hand side. Usually they plan to offer ~500 interviews and they will update it based on how many spots have been filled. OUWB Admissions is also active on twitter so keep an eye out for their announcements.

What is Oakland's clinical grading scheme?

Thanks 🙂

M1/M2 - Honors/Pass/Fail. Anybody can get honors, not just a % of the class.

M3/M4 - Honors/High Pass/Pass/Fail.

Ranked or unranked?

I'm not sure if this was supposed to about only pre-clinicals or all 4 years, but I think I remember them saying during the interview day that they will provide which quintile you are in to residency directors. Not a specific spot of where you are in the class, but a general idea.

Really excited about this school! Applying as OOS!

Still thinking about applying, depends on MCAT...

applying OOS too! GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!

@TheThirdLevel in your opinion what does Oakland really look for in applicants

I think out of all the schools I interviewed at, it was biggest on "fit". I don't think they go for anything specific - research, volunteering, shadowing, leadership, MCAT/GPA are all good, but I never got the impression that they prioritized any specific one. I think in terms of personality they really go for team players and people who are driven to succeed. Based on what i've seen the class in quite diverse in terms of ECs and goals (some more community oriented, some more research oriented). From what I can gather from the second look and the FB group everyone is already getting along very well. They say their admissions process is more holistic and I totally believe that. They also must have a lot of confidence in their screening because if you get an interview you basically have a 50/50 shot at getting accepted. They've done a great job in gathering like-minded people to foster a collaborative environment.

Applying OOS. Really love this school! Good luck everyone!

Gonna apply, hopefully get some in-state holistic love

@TheThirdLevel how was the interview?

Long interview day (8am-4pm), so make sure you get some rest. But it was fun, very illuminating, and quite enjoyable. From what I remember it broke down something like this:

- Start off with breakfast/informational presentations
- Sample Team-Based Learning exercise in small groups (admissions people leave the room for this - no "grading" of any sort haha)
- They took us on a bus to Beaumont, where we had a nice lunch.
- Half the group went on the hospital tour first, the other half had their interviews
- Two interviews for each person. Pretty laid back and conversational. Interviewers can see all your info except for GPA/MCAT. 30 mins each I think, but time passes fast because it was quite relaxed. In fact, the first thing my first interviewer said to me was "Since you're in this seat right now, you have a 50/50 shot of making it in". They're also very receptive to your questions. Mine had one person who was a clinical faculty at Beaumont and another who was more on the educational side at OUWB, i'm not sure if this was true for everyone though.
- After the interviews we did an amazing tour of Beaumont. The hospital is HUGE, we got to see a ton of stuff including the huge ER, the helicopter, the surgical simulation center (which is truly unlike anything i've ever seen before), and we even spent some time at the garden (which is inside the hospital and kind of hovering in the middle of it all, suspended). Also saw the medical student lounge here.
- Came back to OU and did a full tour of pretty much everything the med students would use. Lecture halls, student lounge, dedicated floor of the library, VERY nice anatomy lab, fitness center, etc.

The admissions people here are extremely friendly and helpful, and they really try to get to know you. The interview day was a lot of fun, but make sure you wear comfortable shoes. LOTS of walking.

Thank you! I went to the preview day for this school and fell in love. I think my chances here are pretty good. Did you chose this school over other MI schools?

I ended up choosing it over Central Michigan and Wayne State.

Reapplying this year. Interviewed this past year and made it onto the 2nd tier of the waiting list.

Hoping to gain a couple more points on my MCAT this summer and attend this school next fall!

If you don't mind sharing, what were your stats? And are you IS? Best of luck on MCAT studying!

Can somebody share the secondary essay questions? Thanks!!
Nobody knows the prompts yet for this year. No one will know until Friday at the soonest. So before you post on another school's thread asking for someone to share the secondary questions, just go look at last year's threads and see those questions. Typically they are similar if not the same.

Same issue for me NYerrr. I called them. They are calling their vendor and she told me she would call by the end of the day. Appears we are all in the same boat so no worries.

Did you get the email invite? What is the link to the secondary?

Good luck y'all!

pretty easy secondary, even if you do both of the optionals

Is essay #3 just asking you to explain any time you weren't in school (e.g. gap year job), or is it asking you to explain odd gaps where you didn't do anything?

I think you can interpret it either way.

To those of you who have received secondaries, has your AMCAS app already been verified?

Just got the secondary and had some questions for everyone.

My school only does committee letters and I have a total of 6 recommendations within the packet. But I read on Oakland's website that committee letters only count as 2 of their 3 recommended letters. Does that mean I need to get another letter outside of my packet to fulfill the requirement(despite the fact that I have 6)?

Also, for entering our class information, my bio classes have separate grades for labs, while my chem classes have the lab grades incorporated in our class grades. Since there is only one line to enter my lab grades, how would I account for my second bio lab?

Thanks for all your help.

Received secondary today as well and am verified.

I have a question regarding the prerequisite coursework. If I had 2 lab courses separate from the lecture component, how would I list that as there is only one row for the lab?

E-mail them to be safe. I e-mailed them early afternoon about the prerequisite coursework section, and they responded within 1 hour!

Let me know what they tell you, because I have the same prob.
Please and Thank you

When filling out coursework, if we've taken two semesters of math AND 1 semester of calculus, should we put all of that down, or just pick the top two grades you got (like, 1 math and 1 statistics), and list that instead?

I just put all three

I just put all three
Thanks!

Also, I took 1 gen chem, 2 ochems and 1 biochem. Does anyone know if I can use one of my ochem classes to fulfill 2 semesters of gen chem? I only took 1 semester of gen chem.
