2014-2015 Oakland University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Post-interview rejection via email today. Interviewed 10/3, LizzyM 75, OOS. Was kind of expecting this, as it was my first interview and I could tell that I botched it. Seems like they have a great program going there, best of luck to all of you!

Awe, I'm sorry to hear that! How was the interview itself, though? Why did you think you botched it?

I was pretty nervous and put my foot in my mouth a few times. One of the interviews was more relaxed and conversational, the other one not as much.

Overall I was very impressed by the interview day. The students all seemed extremely happy, and literally everybody that I talked to throughout the day seemed liked they were very excited for us to see their school. I was bummed to get the email, but I'm fortunate enough to have offers elsewhere. I'm positive that everyone who matriculates at OUWB will have a great medical school experience! Best wishes to you all!

Thanks for the info. It's either I take Nov. 25th or Feb. 13th. I am worried that my chances would be reduced considerably if I interview that late. If i go to the Detroit Wayne Aiport, is there a bus that will take me to Oakland?
There is a shuttle.

I uploaded an Update via the portal yesterday and got the rejection email this morning at 615am. GL to all!

Sorry to hear that man. If you don't mind, was this a pre-interview or post-interview rejection?

rejected last week after applying very late (LORs in Oct).

IS, 66 LizzyM, sibling attends.

good luck to the rest of you. ;D

I've been out of the SDN loop for a bit, and just decided to read some of this application thread now that Thanksgiving break is here. I used to troll SDN hard during app times, so if anyone wants extra info or has questions feel free to pm me. I would've liked to have a resource when I was applying, so don't mind helping out applicants now 🙂 Just a few thoughts:

For those of you concerned about having late interview dates, call the admissions office and request to be put on a cancellation list. I was originally scheduled to interview in January, but managed to snag a November interview date.

Stop using Lizzy M scores for OUWB - they don't apply. Maybe other schools (I know I calculated mine), but Oakland's holistic review goes beyond numbers. Think extracurriculars, views on medicine (preventative medicine is key), and how personable you are during interviews. They do an amazing job at picking genuinely nice people with great personalities, so if that's you then be yourself on interview day.

We really do have the best faculty here. A professor went out of his way to help explain some health test results to me for 45 minutes today. It's the day before a holiday, yet he took the time to meet with me after another professor had so kindly e-mailed him on my behalf to request his assistance. Our professors are more than willing to put forth extra effort to further our education and actually care about our wellbeing. The kind and compassionate faculty we have create a great atmosphere and are what will help graduate compassionate physicians - which is part of the school's mission statement.

I didn't intend to write this much, but I could go on for days about how great of an experience this first semester has been. Congrats to all those who got II's or are accepted, and good luck to those still waiting to hear! Feel safe in knowing that you'll end up wherever you're supposed to be.

Oakland, my love for you is so deep that it is forbidden. Please don't reject me, and turn me into a Juliet without her Romeo! 🙁

Rejected today pre-interview 🙁 . I actually got the rejection email less than an hour before my phone interview with Western Michigan. You win some you lose some. Good luck to everyone still applying!!

Sorry to hear that, fellow Ruby!! I hope you get good news from Western!

Rejected today pre-interview, complete around the end of August (added on late). LizzyM ~69, IS. It's okay, I honestly wasn't too psyched about this school anyway. Good luck to everyone else.

Don't take it too personally, I think the school has just run out of interview invitations to give out. I believe there were only about 30/375 invites remaining as of last Wednesday. I'm expecting a rejection soon, as well.

just curious, where did you get that information? I just applied recently so I'm wondering if I should expect that same thing.

First rejection.. liked this school 🙁. Good luck to everyone else!

I will be starting here this fall! I didn't know what to expect but I absolutely fell in love during the interview day. If anyone has any questions, let me know!

Also, I don't think any school is "easy" to get into.

Also, keep an eye on this link once secondaries start coming out:
http://www.oakland.edu/medicine/admissions/interviews

They have an "interview tracker" on the right hand side. Usually they plan to offer ~500 interviews and they will update it based on how many spots have been filled. OUWB Admissions is also active on twitter so keep an eye out for their announcements.

What is their interview day like? I've been to their website but it's not specific enough. How should I prepare? What's unique about their interview? What are they looking for? Are the two interviews in the afternoon each one-on-one or panel? And do they evaluate you during the Team Based Learning Exercise or is it just for you to know what to expect if you get in?

Thanks so much in advance!!!

The interview day is long but very informative. You spend a few hours at the actual medical school for info sessions and TBL, then take a bus out to Beaumont-Royal Oak (their clinical campus) for a tour, lunch, and interviews. At the end of the day you are bused back to the med school campus where there is an optional tour (which I recommend - this is the only chance you have to see the lecture halls, student lounges, anatomy lab, etc.). There are lots of chances to talk with current students.

There are two interviews that are typically one-on-one with faculty/staff or a physician in the Beaumont system. I'm pretty sure the dean said that some people may be interviewed by an M4 student and a faculty/staff/physician together. My interviewers each had an identical set of questions they were "supposed to ask" and then both had some different questions they wanted to ask me, some being fairly standard interview questions, others based on my specific application. You'll get an idea of the type of people they want in their community during the info session at the beginning of the day - they seem to really value active learning, collaboration, and well-roundedness. If you check the SDN interview feedback for Oakland, the reviews there (although there are only a few) were fairly accurate based on my experience!

They said we are not evaluated during the TBL exercise, and all the admissions people left the room for it (it was just the interviewees and a professor). It seems like it's just to show you what the learning environment is like.

Thank you!!
What are the questions they were "supposed to ask," and how do you prepare? What sources can I use to prepare?

I know its super late to ask this, but do they send an "application complete" confirmation after you submit the supplemental? It was months ago but I see that the last thing I got from Oakland was the "supplemental Received" email. On the portal I've had green check marks on everything since I submitted my supplemental approx. 2.5 months ago so I assumed I was fine.

No they do not

Interviewed 10/3 and no word, anyone else in this situation? I have probably been waitlisted.

This means that you are still being considered. Dean Grabowski said that we would be notified as soon as a decision was reached on our status, including waitlist. So this is good news, as it means they liked your app enough to continue reviewing it instead of rejecting or waitlisting you outright.

Thanks for the info. I must have misheard because I thought the waitlist decisions are released in the spring for some reason. Nice avatar/username btw haha

I'm also in the same situation and interviewed 9/12. Like @Glandzburg said we're still being considered! I also read somewhere that waitlist decisions are in the spring but I can't remember where. Maybe twitter?

From what I remember on interview day. They said you'll know before spring if you're rejected, accepted, Or third tier waitlist. they said this is the first year they are telling people third tier waitlist before spring. And if you haven't heard one of these things you are still being considered till spring where they will tell you if you're second tier or first tier waitlist.

@CaptK7 and @PharmDoc13 I thought they said the waitlist is RANKED in the spring - so you could theoretically know now whether you have been waitlisted, but they notify you in the spring whether you're in the top third, middle third, or bottom third. They said they very rarely pull from the middle and bottom third. I have exactly how it works written down somewhere in a notebook I left in my parents' house, but I won't be able to check it until this weekend!
This ^ @CaptK7

BTW, I also interviewed on 10/3, perhaps we met!

EDIT: you are also the first on SDN to catch the reference in my pic/username

I just got an interview invite! Hadn't really thought about going here until just recently. I've looked at their numbers for IS vs. OOS and I don't really see a trend even though it's a public university. Do I even have a chance being OOS?

They are a privately funded medical school. Look at their matriculants on the MSAR and you'll notice that it's a dead 50/50 shot for IS v. OOS. Good luck!

It's not a public med school.
