2014-2015 Stanford University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
interviewed same day and haven't heard anything yet. But they did say that the earliest we would hear back is end of February. But I bet it will be even longer since 12/15 students seem to not have heard back yet either
hoping to clarify the myth that acceptances/turn around time is faster for those accepted off the bat... heard few people from group already accepted while 12/15 group is still waiting which makes me wonder how the processing works and if there is any correlation between acceptance and turn around time.

At this point, I'm sure peeps from 12/15 have heard back with acceptances... onto the WL/rejection pile we go

I feel that there should be a two subthreads, one for people waiting for interviews and one for people waiting for acceptances. Accepted people don't deserve a thread at this point.

FYI, as an n=1, I was accepted ~12 weeks after my interview.

There is one benefit of being waitlisted: I no longer have to hold on in buying winter gears. I didn't want to buy snow boots or a thick sweater only to store them away for the next four years. For the first half of the winter I was so cold!

Pssttt. Tahoe is only 3 hours away.

I interviewed in October, found out I was accepted in January (~12 weeks). Some people from my interview group were accepted a month ahead of me.

Sample size n=2, thank you for your feedback. I wonder if that only applies to the earlier interviews rather than later ones in like January.

I interviewed early October and got the acceptance call mid November. It took roughly 6 weeks.

Hi all. I applied to Stanford very early on, and had long since assumed that I was in a rejection pile somewhere. Honestly, it was not on my mind at all. Much to my surprise, I woke up this morning to find an interview invite in my inbox. There was only one date, for the first week of March. This will be my first MMI. If anyone has any advice on this interview format, I would appreciate it. Good luck to anyone still waiting.

Same!!! Congratulations btw 🙂 In complete shock....but also a total novice at the MMI format, so I've gotta do some research/prep. Those who are still waiting, keep the faith!

I have heard that once students get an interview, some schools treat them as they are all on the same playing field. So and interviewee with weaker stats and an interviewee with stronger stats will only be compared via their interview quality. Does anyone know if Stanford is like this? Thanks

Unfortunately, this is largely an urban myth. There are several threads on SDN about the various weights attached to interviews/the philosophy that surrounds interview evaluation. Mimelim and Gyngyn have spoken extensively about this, I believe.

So no, there is virtually no chance that all applicants are on a smooth playing surface once receiving an interview invitation. That being said, Goro has this awesome quote that I'm about to butcher: the only person you're competing against at the interview is yourself. Don't worry about the playing field or the other applicants - worry about doing yourself - your application and your years of hard work - justice.

Yea good perspective, thanks!

Really hoping for one of those last interview spots here as well. Seems like a fair amount of invites have gone out in the past few weeks which keeps me hopeful but not too sure. Have been complete since August and just keep thinking that the rejection letter probably got lost in the mail.

hi all, and congrats to those of you who got in! Not sure this is the appropriate place, but it seems like there's a high probability someone might know the answer to my question. Does Stanford have a dept/person with whom to speak about applying there (for those who don't attend Stanford)? I've searched all around and haven't been able to figure it out. People on SDN have mentioned setting up appointments (at other schools), and some schools advertise an advisory dept on their site (especially if they're targeting a specific applicant group), but I've combed through the Stanford site to no avail. Thanks in advance.

I was complete in early September. I have below average/median stats, but exceptional extracurricular experiences (multiple national and intl scholarships/fellowships) and a very unique background (non-traditional). When I started out this process, I was not given the most encouraging feedback, and truly believed I was throwing money away by applying to top tier schools like Stanford. However, I have done very well with interviews this cycle. Based on the feedback I have received during interviews, I believe my different background and experiences are what set me apart (although I certainly had good enough stats to not be screened out from the beginning). Because of my experience this cycle, I really do believe that there is no single or best path to medical school. In my case, taking the time to really explore other interests and become absolutely sure that medicine was the career I wanted to pursue paid off. The truth is that stats etc aren't necessarily the best metric. Good luck to you!

Congrats to you too! Best of luck, and see you on interview day!!!

anyone know when interview season at stanford ends?

Looks like the trend if it takes over 6 weeks to hear back after december interviews lead to either waitlist/ rejection.

anyone know when interview season at stanford ends?
March is the last month for interviews, I believe.

Actually, this was in my file completion email in July: "
Invitations to interview are made from August through April.
Our interview season is from September through April. Signup for an
interview day will be at the site listed above."

Here's to hoping we all grab a last minute invite.

Probably was asked at some point, but curious whether anyone got a confirmation email for a post-interview update letter? Sent one to the mdadmissions email

I got an update response day after really early but the one I sent recently didn't.

first post!

So Stanford sends all accepted/WL/reject notices through snail mail.

Do they make a call for all accepted students? And I assume this is before the letter arrives in the mail, correct?

From my experience, yes -- the Dean will call you.

Does anyone know how likely an acceptance is by interviewing in March, or is it pretty much interviewing for a waitlist spot at this point? I imagine a good portion of the class is filled already. Regardless, I'm super excited to spend a weekend in Palo Alto/San Fran!

Congratulations on II! Although I can't give you any statistical information but I came to peace when people were wondering why my interview in january was so late and that they already interviewed in Oct/Nov. But in the end I'm still going interview in January with the same mindset and (perhaps a bit more preparation after becoming seasoned with few other interviews) for this one. I would be very honored to be selected from 7000+ top applicants who believe they had a shot at Stanford to begin with. Good luck!!! Fact that they have interviews in March means there are spots available otherwise they already have a waitlist ready, doesn't make sense to make march/april interviews for waitlist spots...

Exactly..they've waitlisted a bunch of people already. no need for more

There are some schools who interview for Waitlists too this late in the cycle....My experience. Am sure Stanford is different.

Thanks! I hope you hear good news. Yeah, this is the mentality I am going into this interview with. I'm just honored to even get a shot at a school as amazing as Stanford.
