Right. That was not at all the system they described during the interview day. They said they take the top 20 on the list at each meeting. And it seems the points system is far from a 1-5 scale.

BioEng is not totally wrong. However, Nobody will reveal our system to you. What you should know is that it's thorough and relatively fair considering there's always subjectivity in this process. We do score people.

You can still get off the waitlist. The chance exists each time we vote as a committee. Chill people. The sooner you accept that you have no control over these types of things the better you will start to feel 😉

Are MD students allowed to take classes in the Department of Public Health Sciences? I mean non-MD/MPH students. Do people do that or does the scheduling not work? Just curious.

I've never heard of anyone doing that without taking a year off to pursue other coursework. I don't know that faculty/deans would encourage taking that on. Also I believe scheduling would interfere.

I was looking through last years thread for some clarification on Miami's acceptance / waitlist system that was discussed on interview day. I've copied excerpts from posts by a current medical student that were helpful as I thought you all may be interested as well. If you would like to read them in their entirety they are by @Leonora on p.22 of last years thread.

"I was talking with someone on the committee last week, and apparently everyone receives a 1-5 ranking after their interviews. Any 1s on the list are immediately accepted, and the rest often end up on the alternate list."

"Updating: chatted with my source again. Source confirms that although it's possible to get off the alternate list right now, it's pretty rare. The committee member with whom I was speaking says that they're only voting on newly-interviewed people right now, but since people sometimes are accepted off the alternate list, there must be some executive action/ list review going on. They expect the majority of movement to happen after May 15."

I interviewed there today, and if I heard the Dean correctly, he said that they typically take around 25 off of the waitlist each year. However, everyone that is interviewed and not initially accepted is placed on the waitlist. So there will be almost 200 people on the waitlist, giving you about a 10% chance.

There's always a chance. Make sure to continue to update your application with significant recent achievements/coursework/etc. The Dean said today that they take that into serious consideration.

Maybe only 25 were accepted May 15th last year, but other waitlistees were accepted a few weeks or months before then. One of my reasons for thinking this is like 85ish? people interview in September and only 20 of them are initially accepted-- that's a very low number accepted for a lot of very strong candidates. And USNews says that like 70% of all interviewees are accepted too!

The last time I sent an update, it took them a little over a week to confirm that they received it, so I'd give it some time.

Yeah, it was a bit ambiguous, so perhaps you're right. I don't think they really want to tell us exactly how their process works.

careful tho... after a couple days I would log in and all my dates went blank as if I never went in and chose any... I called and they said it was an error in the system that had happened to other applicants as well... so make sure your day is confirmed. I ended up with a much much later interview day than all three that I chose initially... kinda got screwed.

I think it took about 3 weeks for me. Of course it's rolling, so it totally depends on how they rank you in comparison to the competition. Don't give up hope.

I've been at that status since early July....so I'm probably not ranked very high compared to everyone else lol. Here's to hoping all of us still waiting for II's get some after the holidays!

I got a deal on a hotel on South Beach from Expedia, after buying a plane ticket. Parking was too expensive there though, but the hotel was only ~$100/day. You can get a rental car for roughly $25/day on Kayak. If you already have full-coverage insurance, you can decline the rental car insurance and save a ton of money.

I would say early August. My app was submitted mid-late July, but my photo was confirmed as received a bit later.

There is a hotel a block away from Miller SOM. Spring Hill Suites. They have a contract with UMiami, so try calling them up and letting them you you're a visiting student for the medical school and that you want the Miller SOM rate. If the lady who answers the phone 'doesn't know what your talking about', ask for the manager. I think I paid ~$400 for 4 days when I interviewed last year. It is literally an 8 minute walk from the building where admissions is - you couldn't ask for a more stress-free morning before an interview than that. Good Luck!

Cannot be done - scheduling conflicts first and foremost, and secondarily, size-limitations of the program/resources would halt this. If you're interested in MD/MPH, apply to MD/MPH. You'll be done in 4 years like your MD counterparts anyway 🙂

The answer to this depends on if you currently have an interview invite or not. If you have an invite, then hold off until after the interview - you will be able to share your updates at the interview in person, and it will give you more to talk about! The more you things have to talk about at an interview, the better off you are! If you haven't been invited for an interview and your application has been in for a significant amount of time (2+ months) sending an update wouldn't be a bad idea, as long as you have meaningful things to put in the update letter. If you ended up taking one more course this semester than you planned (i.e., reported as future coursework on AMCAS) and have taken on some 5 hour a week babysitting / tutoring thing on the side, it will have little influence on the committees opinion of your application. This is not specific to Miller btw, this is pretty universal.

If you've already had an interview, you're free to send an update whenever you wish! With that in mind - if you've had an interview, you already have about a 70% chance of being accepted, either flat out or via the waitlist. So the odds are already in your favor 🙂

Thank you so much! I actually have an interview, and that is why I wasn't sure whether to update now or later. Should I still send in a written update after my interview going over everything I have done since my submission? I have graduated, so I don't have the typical classes, and I think it might be important to highlight what I am doing in the mean time, that is substantial. Thank you for your advice!

Yes, thats exactly what I did after my interview. If you do it promptly enough after the interview and you don't have very much to 'update' on (say, maybe a handful of things) it isn't a bad idea to send promptly after the interview and add in some zingers about what new things you learned about the program on interview day, new things you liked about the school, etc, and make it an update/thank you hybrid.

I'm not on the committee, but (a) I'm a current student and (b) as I understand it the committee is generally open to new information, so long as its meaningful as per my previous post 🙂

I used uber and it was relatively cheap! I think it was around $13, but this was during the day and I'm not sure how uber sets its rates.
