2014-2015 Vanderbilt University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I don't know, BlackMann, but I'm wishing your essays are invited to dance real soon!

This may have been covered, but for some reason I always thought Vanderbilt released acceptances on October 16th (my friend got in on October 16th last year, not early decision) but the website reads:

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Offers of acceptance will be sent in two batches: mid-December and mid-February.

thoughts?

*Edit* I see it was discussed in the past... any consensus? @mjhhockey98 , did they clarify this at your interview?

My only thought: Golly gee, I have many months of suspense left!

They told us that they are going to have two dates where they send out acceptances. One in December and one in February.

In case you guys are wondering, the admissions staff at VUSM changed hands this year, explaining why secondaries and acceptances have been given out differently this cycle.

Also, I'm not sure if you guys saw my post in one of the Top 20 P/F threads, but clerkships during 2nd year have recently switched to a P/F grading policy.

I thought this day would never come. I guess the positive energy that I channeled to Vandy at the Nashville airport some month ago worked! II today. Still dates in Oct left--so plenty interview spots left I'd assume. OOS of course. Super Non trad. I got this news 2s after my interview day at another dream school was officially declared to be over. Can this day be a better day?:highfive:

EDIT: I was completed end of July. So the Aug applicants still have shots!

Hope that many more just as good or better are still to come--but congratulations!!

Just added Vandy to my list a few days ago (lol) but I was waiting on new MCAT scores-- anyone with similar stats (37-39 MCAT, 3.8 GPA) how long did it take to receive a secondary, or how long have you been waiting to receive if you haven't yet?

I just finished my interview here and I must say ... I really hope I get accepted into this school. I have wanted to be a part of the Vanderbilt community for so long and today I realized I really can fit in. Good luck to everyone. I am excited for all of us.

I hope that all your passion and capability just shone and shone and that they can hardly wait to send out that acceptance! Good luck to you!

Does it matter when you interview for Vandy? The website says there are 2 waves of acceptances (mid Dec and mid Feb), so would anytime before December be fine?

Wait that means I totally met you

Good luck my young friend. It seems there are tons left. It's only scheduled to Oct. I was completed LONG TIME ago too. Last days of July. They are not going in orders right now looks like.

So I was planning to write exactly this... Too funny! Also, so great to meet you friendly! In case SDN people are wondering, friendly is in fact super friendly and knows how to rock a pants suit 😉

One thing to add: by the time I logged in, the earliest dates were mid-November.

Thanks and congrats to you too Avocado! You totally looked like a sharp professional lady and ready to be a doc. Too bad we can't meet again in Nashville! Maybe some other time at some other school--although I feel like that my app is 2 steps behind everyone I met that day. I was the only one without having already interviewed at other super schools) The other avocado (yes I found her at the end of the day when you already left) and you were both super chill and smart gals. Glad to meet you guys and best of luck to you in the near future!

So I see some of you guys have figured each other out 😀... I remember when I did that on the interview trail. I would send random PMs to people 3 days later because I realized that the person I talked to for half the day was someone on SDN (It's interesting to see how uncreative we can be when making our SDN handles 😉).

Hahaha. True. I have been meeting SDN peeps everywhere. Recently I met 2 avocados and wolverine. Never got disappointed in the expected awesomeness level.

if any applicants have questions about the school, feel free to ask (or message me, if that's your thing)

I knew who wolverine was straight away but I didn't reveal myself or expose him because we didn't talk much on our interview day! Opposite corners of the room 🙂 But even if we talked I don't know if I would have brought it up. Real life SDN introductions are kinda of a weird thing but maybe it's just me 😉 and maybe I haven't been to many interviews so far so that's why?? Heehee

do people know if 1/5 or 1/2 of the secondary invites are offered interview? i thought there was a discrepancy between what i saw on this site and the vandy website. thanks y'all 🙂

It's 1/5. 1/3 of the 6000+ applicants get the secondary (so ~2000 secondaries) and 1/4 to 1/5 get interviews (about 450 interviews).

If anyone is flying in the morning of October 2nd and wants to split a taxi/uber from BNA to the Vandy campus, shoot me a PM!

"And they admit about 240! Plus waitlist. So I've been told."

"At the interview they told us they send out 1000 secondaries, interview 450, and accept about 150."

Which is it?? haha Both of you interviewed, right?

The latter seems correct to me. 240 seems unusually high for a class of 85.

Yeah, I thought so too. However, I saw this on the site: https://medschool.vanderbilt.edu/md-admissions/admissions-process

"After this first screening, the most competitive applicants are offered an opportunity to send a secondary Vanderbilt-specific application and to come to campus for a personal interview. Approximately one-third of the applicants will be offered the secondary application. We will interview approximately 450 applicants; approximately 200 applicants will be offered admissions for 88 positions."

But, this may be how it was done in the past as mjhhockey98 said they gave out 1000 secondaries, which isn't 1/3 of applicants.

from an email i received today encouraging me to get my secondary in already (i've been sitting on it a while because i've been extremely busy with work/other interviews):

"We wanted to give you some information on how our application process works. We complete a holistic review on all verified AMCAS applications that we receive. Based on last year’s applicant pool, we expect to receive well over 6700 AMCAS applications; approximately 1100 candidates will be offered secondary applications. Once we receive an applicant’s secondary application and letters of evaluation, the file will be brought to our Interview Admissions Committee.

We interview from September 8-January 30th. December 1st is the deadline for Vanderbilt to receive secondary application and letter of evaluation. For candidates who wait until late fall to submit their application, it can be hard to be selected for an interview. We only have approximately 450 interview spots available and fill them as we review quality applicants."

"And they admit about 240! Plus waitlist. So I've been told."

"At the interview they told us they send out 1000 secondaries, interview 450, and accept about 150."

They told me they accept 240 - @teefero ... i'm not crazy right?

LOL! Remembering these numbers can be tough but I'm inclined to go with the 150 range because it seems more plausible for a school like Vandy.

Anyone still waiting for a secondary?

So I also got mixed messages from various people involved in admissions. Ie - I asked two different people if they send out rejections in December. One said no, one said yes. It's also very possible that in recent years they have had to admit anywhere from 150-250 people to fill their class. Either way, still a better chance than many schools once you have an interview!

Adding to the rumor mill...
I understand they have a new or new-ish admissions team. It's very likely that nothing this year will be like the years before.

I'm still hopeful, but not too optimistic about secondaries at this stage.

Congrats to those that are interviewing. I wish you the best!

For those waiting on secondaries, when did you submit?
