2015-2016 Creighton University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey for anyone else accepted, do you know if everyone is invited to apply for the Medical Dean's Diversity Scholarship, or if they only invite certain people based off of their experiences and socioeconomic background?

So if your letters disappeared and you don't have a "days with the jays" tab on your portal, does that mean you're likely rejected?

Cool! What did you think?

I really liked it a lot. From what I got from talking to the current students there, pros for St. Joe's include small rotation groups due to smaller class size and getting more hands on experience due to it being a community hospital versus being a teaching hospital. The patient population is also very different from the population in Omaha. There are a lot of patients that are in poverty or even homeless. I volunteer at St. Joe's so I know the location of the hospital makes it a very busy hospital. I've heard from the volunteer coordinator saying that the ER has had to overflow into other departments due to the amount of patients that come in (and that's happened a few times now). They have a pretty nice simulation lab in the hospital too. Also, with the Phoenix track, I believe all rotations will be at St. Joe's, except for peds which will be done at Phoenix Children's hospital down the street, which I think is nice because you won't have to travel too far. Overall, I think I'm a little biased because of my experience at St. Joe's, but it is a really nice facility and the staff here are very nice. In the months I've volunteered here as a patient escort, I have not heard one negative thing about the hospital.

Would you mind sharing your experience from the day with the jays in Omaha? After you attend of course.

Thanks!!

In my experience, not necessarily. My letters disappeared two to three days before the "day with the jays" invitation appeared. Keep your head up!

Does anyone know how much we'll be paying for the laptops issued to us?

Any idea about whether or not we can just use our own if we already have a MacBook?

I'm not sure about that, but my instinct is no. I know you'll be using it to take tests and whatnot. This is the first year they're doing it.

$400 a year tacked on to tuition for them. Can't opt out sorry. But like Rhizobium said above you will get to keep it after the 4 years.

Hey guys - M4 at Creighton here, a month away from the sweet, sweet taste of never being in school ever again. Feel free to hit me up with any questions you might have, whether you're trying to decide if Creighton is the right place for you or not.

What were your experiences/what did you hear from your fellow students about the pros and cons of the 2 clinical campuses?

What were your experiences/what did you hear from your fellow students about the pros and cons of the 2 clinical campuses?

Background: grew up in SF Bay Area, grad school and work in DC, then came to Omaha. Going into Emergency Medicine at Jacobi/Montefiore in The Bronx.

I spent all four years in Omaha and absolutely LOVED it. It's the (MUCH) older of the two campuses so the name is well-established; you'll find lots of Creighton "lifers" who have been here from undergrad through working as attendings here. Others leave for some time then come back. It's a very close-knit community here and we all look out for each other. The faculty are wonderful teachers who, for the most part, care about the students deeply. (Every school has a few bad apples; we are no exception.) Recently, there has been some issues with the clinical experience for several reasons:

1) Creighton University Medical Center (CUMC) is now owned by CHI Health, yet another big health corporation that has no ****ing clue how to run an academic medical center. Their policies have unfortunately sent some of our faculty members to look for greener pastures, especially the surgery department. Having said that, however, we've also hired some wonderful new surgeons who are doing great things for the department's status and respect in the region.

2) Creighton is moving from CUMC, our hospital and academic home across the street from the university, to Bergan-Mercy, about 6 miles away. CUMC has always been an academic center with a strong educational and training mission, whereas Bergan has always been more of a private community hospital with many attendings who prefer to NOT teach. (Bergan has always been a major for Creighton's OB residency and will become THE primary site with this coming move; some other programs rotate through there, but resident presence is far smaller than at CUMC). Well, now we're bringing all the academics over there and forcing these attendings - the ones who chose to work at Bergan because they didn't want to teach - to teach. Undoubtedly some of them will leave; the great thing is that we will retain most of the Creighton faculty, the ones dedicated to teaching, over to Bergan. The other issue with moving to Bergan is that Creighton's mission has always been to serve those who cannot help themselves. Our current location next to North Omaha works perfectly for that - most of our patients are very underserved/underinsured. Will we still be able to serve that mission as effectively by physically moving away from that community? Will they still come to us? So that's a little up in the air too.

The 45 or so who choose Phoenix for M3 and M4 are a fairly self-selected group. They are usually 1) SW US natives who want to go back home, 2) the big partiers who want to be in a much bigger city than Omaha, or 3) the super outdoorsy ones. They all loved their experience down there - St. Joe's is a MASSIVE, super busy hospital with some truly superstar faculty. The Phoenix crowd tends to be Psych heavy too (6 of my classmates switched out of whatever specialty they were gonna do into Psych, on top of the others already doing it) due to Dr. Caplan, who is apparently such an amazing Psychiatrist and teacher that he convinced them to switch. The OB experience seems to be the one big downfall - it's an EXTREMELY busy baby factory with tons of deliveries every day and night, which is great if you wanna catch 5-10 babies every day, but all my classmates there hated the residents. OB there seems to be a very malignant program and culture; the department says they are taking action to make changes, but those are very much up in the air right now.

There are some really new exciting changes coming to the curriculum that I'm sad I won't get to experience! First of all, every incoming M1 will get a MacBook pre-loaded with apps and books; these laptops will also be used to take exams so we don't have to use the computer lab for that purpose anymore. Secondly, M3 year is getting completely redone - they are adding a 4-week Neuro rotation and three 2-week electives, which I did not get to have.

Having said all that, I've absolutely loved almost every single bit of my experience here. The Midwest is such a comfortable and friendly place to be, and Omaha is a phenomenal city that's growing every day. The food scene here is surprisingly awesome, and this is coming from a snobby Californian such as myself. The farm-to-table restaurant movement here is alive and kicking, and DAMN, do they do it well here. So the big changes these next few years are a little scary, but Creighton knows what they're doing and there's no way they will let this 125-year-old institution go down the drain. I am confident that it will be every bit as great the school it was before some of these unforeseen changes happened.

So do we no longer need to purchase books since they will all be on the laptop?

I don't know if all the books will be on the laptop - those details are still being finalized. (The laptop deal itself just became finalized, like, a month ago)

Do you know what version of the MacBook Pro we'll be getting?

Unfortunately, I don't know that either. I don't think the administration has made that decision yet.

Congrats! There is a Days with the Jays event on 4/16 that lasts from 10am - 2pm. RSVP option was still available last time I checked. If it's not in your portal, I'd shoot a quick email to admissions to see if the event is at capacity.

I actually just got the invite. Thanks!!

Does anyone know/have any info on what the chances of becoming accepted are once you have been put on the alternate list?

I will be withdrawing my acceptance here, but I am so grateful for Creighton. It truly offers a wonderful M.D. program. Good luck, everyone!

It really depends on the year. I'm not entirely certain, but I think nobody has gotten in off the alternate list the last two years, but people have in years before those two.

Hey everyone! I'll be attending Creighton School of Dentistry in Omaha. I've got a house and am looking for roommates. I've got the information below. Please contact me if you might be interested or have any questions.

House for Rent

3610 S 49th St, Omaha, NE 68106
$600/person per month or $650 with reserved garage parking.
*Includes all gas/utilities, high-speed wireless internet, snow removal, and lawn care.

2-story, 4 bedroom house with a kitchen, a living room, and a dining room. We're trying to rent it out to 2 more people (3 total people living there, including myself) and possibly use the 4th room as a study room. Each person will have their own private bathroom. There's a two-stall garage with a long driveway and street parking. Includes all the basic amenities including washing and drying, oven, refrigerator and dish washer. Nice, quiet, clean, and super safe neighborhood, huge fenced in backyard with landscaping, with both a back deck and patio area. About 10 minutes from the medical school. No drama, dependable landlord; my parents to be specific 🙂

I’ve included lots of pictures below as I know many of you live far away. I’m a terrible photographer though, so I’d love to have you come and check out the house for yourself. Feel free to text me, Facebook me, or email me at anytime! Thanks.

How long did it take for people to receive their financial aid award and where do you find this info? Thanks in advance!

I received an email from the financial aid office I believe in early March. I think it is also accessible through your NEST.

Really hoping for some waitlist movement this year... Creighton is my top choice 🙁

After attending second look at another school this weekend, I officially withdrew my offer here this morning. This on goes out to you, Waitlisted #1! Good luck to all!

I really enjoyed the day with jays program in Omaha. The program began with a tour that was basically the same as the interview day tour. We then sat through several lectures discussing student wellness/support programs, financial aid, and the curriculum. I really liked how Creighton puts a big focus on supporting Creighton med students. The Student Affairs office provides plenty of opportunities ranging from tutoring to specialty advising to help Creighton med students get where they want to go. The curriculum is similar to other medical schools I interviewed at, but Creighton seemed to be very interested in taking student suggestions on how to improve the curriculum into account. For example, Creighton has added 3 two week electives to 3rd year to provide students an opportunity to experience a specialty they might be interested in earlier in their training. We finished the day with a lunch with medical students ranging from 1st years to 4th years. The lunch was very candid, and I really feel like the medical students were honest about what they liked and disliked about the school. All of the medical students I ate lunch with were very happy with their choice to attend Creighton. The main downside of Creighton that I observed is the cost. The estimated cost of attendance was about $79,000 for next year.

Thank you so much for that info! I agree with what you said, everyone I've met at Creighton seems very happy. It is very expensive but I think it will be worth it, rather than going to a cheaper school that doesn't have as much support for their students. Will you be attending Creighton?

Clinical campus sites came out today, hope you all got what you wanted! As an AZ native, I was really hoping for the Phoenix campus but got the alternate list. To current students, how large was the alternate list last year/ how much movement occurred? I know only a few students were left on the alternate last year but didn't know if the demand was 100 students like it is this year.

So you heard there was a lot of movement last year? Just curious since it seemed like there were people complaining about no movement in last year's thread.

Yeah, I heard there's considerable movement as people settle into school, get into a relationship, or develop friendships that keep them in Omaha. I also heard that there were only a handful of students who didn't get into the Phoenix campus who wanted it this last year. However, I don't know how many were originally on the alternate list so it's tough to do a direct comparison.

I'm also an az native and luckily got chosen for phoenix. I heard there was a lot of movement too. I think that if you don't get off you can still do rotations here your 4th year or something like that. Best of luck to you for getting off it though. Just tell the people not from az that you'll willingly take their place so they don't have to deal with the heat! 🙂

Are you sure the complaints about lack of movement weren't in reference to the alternate list for a place in the M1 class? I know the alternate list for admission to the M1 class hasn't moved at all the last couple years, but I think it would be too early to tell right now what the final situation will be for last year's applicants as far as clinical campus sites because they're just finishing their M1 years, and I think people can still flip between the two sites into their M2 years.

They were about the M1 class...misunderstood what alternate list he was referring to. My bad.

Sadly I will be withdrawing from Creighton. The students and faculty were all wonderful, and I know that all who choose to attend will have a great four years. To all those still on the waitlist, I wish you the best of luck!

I will most likely be attending Creighton. I'm currently on the waitlist for my instate school, so I would have to consider my options if I got in off the waitlist. My instate school would save me roughly $100,000 and allow me to attend medical school with my girlfriend, but I liked Creighton more because Creighton has a better curriculum imo and has better match placements overall.

Happy to say I withdrew my spot here last week.
Went to undergrad at Creighton. Hated it. Hope you all find it more pleasing than I did.
