2015-2016 Medical College of Georgia Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thanks!! I haven't scheduled it yet because on the day that works best for me, I have a quiz. So I am waiting on my professor to tell me whether or not that will mean a 0. But the dates available are very soon. I am looking at next Wednesday.
Congrats! When's your interview date?

Yay! I hope I'll see you there 🙂

Got II on Friday (Submitted 8/6). Scheduled for 9/25. CONGRATS to those EDP who got accepted!!! So exciting!! Good luck to everyone interviewing. Let me know if anyone else on here is going to be there on that day

lol yep. I'm a student at GRU, well Augusta University now. The name thing is pretty tiring haha. Although, I do prefer it over Georgia Regents.
Do people still call the medical college MCG? I'm sort of unsure of how to refer to it.

Yeah, it'll always be referred to as MCG. The undergrad name change doesn't affect it. Just the added, 'MCG at Augusta University'.

Does anyone else feel like this whole application season is going more slow than usual? Is MCG a bit behind, or are most applicants not on SDN? haha, I'm not seeing as many IIs as I thought I would at this point.

I think they are a bit behind. The secondary didn't even get sent out to most people until August. I wouldn't worry about it!

So I'm interviewing here on Wednesday. Any last minute advice for MCG's interview?
For those who have interviewed, how did it go?? Did you absolutely love it?

Does anyone else have a green check mark for "Letter of References" under the "Status" tab but nothing listed under "References" in the "Document Status" tab?

Mine is the same. I emailed them a few weeks ago, and they said they have everything they need from me. So I don't know if it means anything or not.

That spot on Mercer's tab is for the interviewer letters after you interview. I'm assuming it's the same. Anyways, I can tell you after Wednesday if it is or isn't! Or someone who has already interviewed could tell you.

It's a very low-stress atmosphere. Know your application - both your strong and weak points. Be concise and to the point with why you're qualified. Show your diversity and how you'll add to the school. Wouldn't hurt to research MCG and its mission statement.

All in all, be "present" at your interview. Don't get caught up in your head about "the right answer". It's a conversation between two people. You want it to sound fluid and not rehearsed. Make sure not to lose your personality.

Other than that, the day is great. Easy-going and the tour around campus really shows off the great facilities. Honestly, I was too anxious to get the interviews out of the way to really enjoy the whole day. Hindsight 20/20, shoulda relaxed a little more. Lol.

Any other questions, just ask.

Thanks so much for your reply! I know it's different for every interviewer, but were there any questions you got that maybe you weren't expecting? Kinda off the wall questions?

Honestly, not really. They were all questions that I had either heard before or figured they'd ask. Of course the obligatory, "Why do you want to be a doctor?" WILL come up. I had questions ranging from my opinion on the current status of healthcare, the biggest health risk facing patients right now, specifics about why MCG rather than other schools, biggest weakness/strengths, what I am most proud of that I have accomplished over the past year... Unfortunately the list goes on and on. But you could also luck out like I did and talk about UGA football for the last 20 minutes of your interview.

Haha. Well thanks for some questions! Most of those I definitely already expected to hear. I hope those are the kind I get. Nothing too random.

Hey guys! Just got the II for Augusta or Athens. Anyone have insight over the benefit of interviewing at both? Do I essentially increase my chances by being able to be admitted to both? Is there a reason to only interview at Augusta? Based on what I've researched, Athens is more PBL which is actually my learning style so I'm thinking about interviewing at both! Just wanted to see if anyone had "insider" information. lol.

EDIT: Realized you may only interview at one, chose Athens.

From my understanding, you don't actually interview at both. You interview at Augusta only if you choose that. Or you interview at Athens and have to tour Augusta later. If you haven't seen the Athens campus, I would probably go there to see it since you have to tour Augusta later anyways. Especially if you're thinking that's where you would want to go. And if the date for Athens is earlier, that's always a plus. Athens is a great city, and the school is really small and community-like!

Yeah, I ended up choosing to interview in Athens, with a visit to Augusta a week prior. So that should give me a feel for which is a better fit!

You can't be admitted to both. You're admitted to MCG and then choose a campus preference. That being said, if you're interested in the Athens campus I'd definitely interview there!

I hope you like it! It's really family-like. Everybody there knows everybody.

Btw, good luck with the interview tomorrow! We're almost there! out of 550 interviews, 220 matriculated (40%) last cycle. Assuming MCG accepted 1.5 times it's class, one could assume they accept around 330 for a 60% admission rate post interview! (some argue most schools take 2x it's class, so that rate could even be higher, though I would argue the rate is probably lower for public schools)

Thank you so much! I've been trying to figure out that math for MCG also. Haha. The odds are definitely in our favor, but nothing is certain. That's for sure and something that definitely stuck with me from last cycle. I really do wish they could accept us all. I just wish I knew the difference between someone who gets accepted and someone who gets waitlisted.

Oh ok, so you received an II last cycle as well? Are your stats this cycle the same? Also, did you receive an II around the same last cycle?

congrats on the II! Mind sharing stats? feel free to PM if you prefer.

I didn't get an II last cycle, unfortunately. I did interview at Mercer though (their stats are pretty good also because they have a lot of waitlist movement), and that definitely wasn't guaranteed. So I'm hoping this cycle goes a lot better! For both of us because I know you're a reapplicant too.

We got this! I think it's a good sign we got an II pretty early..they like us on paper! Now just have to convince them in person. Are you interviewing Augusta?

That's what I keep trying to tell myself! Haha. They have a spot for us. We just have to (somehow) convince them it's ours. And yep! I lived in Athens for 4 years since I went to undergrad there so I've seen the campus a bunch, and I had a class on it. So I figured I would see what Augusta was all about since I had never been to Augusta before today!

Had a lovely interview day today! The interviews themselves were very chill and the interviewers were very nice. MCG's facilities are impressive, to say the least. Their new building is really amazing! The only thing I don't love about this school is Augusta.

What's your opinion about Augusta? I've heard things from every spectrum about that place.

I'm confused as to why some people seem to get the choice of what campus they interview, but my II email just gave me the Augusta address and said pick a date. I would have preferred to interview in Athens since I live there! Does anyone know why they only give some people a choice?

I'm not entirely sure how they decide who to interview at Athens, but I do know it is a "small pool" of applicants. This is what came in my email:

"You have also been selected to participate in a pilot program which allows a small group of applicants to interview at either the Athens Campus or the Augusta Campus."

My best guess, maybe they invite students who have close ties with small, rural communities?

Thanks for your response. I was asking because I'm becoming increasingly interested in choosing the Athens campus. Like someone mentioned before, I like the PBL style of learning! But as far as Athens vs Augusta as cities, I could care less. Ultimately I haven't even decided which campus I prefer or if I have a preference at all. As long as I still get to indicate my preference all the same once I figure it out, I suppose I can just deal with the hike to Augusta.

Does anyone know if you can still do the rural campus clinical thing for 3rd/4th year like they said on the secondary if you matriculate to Athens campus?

Edit: Did not mean to sound presumptuous, forgot to mention all that stuff about preference obviously only applies if I get accepted. Big IF!! I was just wishfully thinking about it 🙂

"Students at the Athens campus rotate in Hall, Jackson, Gwinnett, Barrow, Dekalb, Clayton, Newton, Oconee, Clarke, Madison, Elbert, Habersham and Stephens Counties with more sites developing."

Take what you will from that, but it doesn't seem to list Rome, Albany, Savannah, or Brunswick that's on the secondary.

Just a heads up, I interviewed in Augusta but had the option to interview in Athens too, and I don't have any ties to small or rural communities. So I'm pretty sure it's random

Odd for it to be at random, but I guess it's plausible.

Hey everyone!!

I'm a 3rd year at the Athens campus. Just wanted to answer a few questions that have come up.

Everyone, regardless of where they do the preclinical years, has the opportunity to go to one of the rural sites for clinical years- Rome, Albany, savannah, or Brunswick. Everyone who starts in Athens can stay in Athens for clinical years. And then folks in Augusta have an option of coming to Athens for clinical years as well (normally only 1-2 spots open for that).

As far as who gets invites to Athens for interviews, I don't think it's entirely random, but it's not necessarily those that currently live in Athens or have rural ties either. We only interview 1-2 applicants each week in Athens, so it's a small pool.

We hold open houses once a month, so if anyone is interested in the Athens campus, but doesn't get invited to an interview in Athens, that's a great chance to come and see the campus and talk with current students!! The next open house is Oct. 24th.

I'm happy to answer any questions that come up about the Athens campus, or 3rd year life, whatever. I try to keep an eye on this threat so feel free to post questions here or PM me.

Well, yesterday was my first time in Augusta so I didn't get to see a ton, but I was neither surprised nor impressed by what I saw. It's a quiet city with a small-town feel. It seems like there's not really a ton to do other than stuff on the river, which isn't my cup of tea, but I can see how it would be a big draw for some people! There are quite a few sketchy parts of town, but you'd probably learn pretty quickly where not to go.

I called some weeks ago about the red status for LOR and they said it was a glitch in the system. I sent it my application over a month ago and the LOR status is still red. When I called today, they told me they have to manually change it as the students call in and it will take time. Did anyone else go through that? If it still is red after a week, should I call again?
