2015-2016 Oakland University (Beaumont) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Rejected this afternoon, Canadian Applicant, LizzyM of only around 68. Was not expecting much due to a lower MCAT score (29). Complete 7/8. First post-secondary rejection does sting a bit, but gotta keep our heads up!

I submitted my secondary on JULY FIRST (yes, the FIRST) and all I've gotten so far is silence! UGH this wait is the worst haha 🙁 LizzyM 66 so not really expecting much haha

Same here. I havent even gotten a single interview invite from any MD school yet either.

Hearing nothing is better than rejection! I'm dreading the email from OU because I know it's not going to be a happy one

Anyone heard anything from an interview standpoint? Nothing but silence since applying...

I'm seriously so confused how people have gotten ii's/rejections when they submitted weeks later than me, and all I have is silence. Like how is that even possible considering these are supposed to be rolling admissions....

Sometimes it's arbitrary, like one person is in charge of reviewing a stack of apps, and they have like 10 people doing 10 stacks. Maybe that one person who has yours is moving slower. And sometimes they have to deliberate on your specific app longer...

cGPA 3.4 sGPA 3.7 MCAT just slightly above average....
But I also have 1000+ hours of clinical volunteering in a hospital and free clinic, 2000+ hours molecular bio research including two summer internships, travel scholarships and abstract acceptances at 3 national conferences, 4 semesters of orgo peer tutoring and science writing tutoring at my school, and I'm a first-generation college student from a low-income family with 5+ years of business management experience.
Good god you're a seasoned veteran in the medical related experience game lol

Haha, thanks.... As a career changer in a second bachelor's program just for the purpose of becoming a physician, I am not screwing around! I was nervous about being "nontraditional" but hopefully it puts me ahead of the game. I admit, when I re-read that it sounded pretty good

Same here no news yet for me here. We are still in the running until the rejection email comes.

submitted the secondary, letters are in. How long does it take to be marked complete?

When I refresh my email for the 40th time today and all I get is an email from Groupon

Yea, you should see the DMU thread. I've been complete since early JUNE there, but no response from them.

I"m not so sure about this rolling admissions thing.....

IS Rejected, 3.8, 32, bummed out. I was born there for god-sake. No love
Hey I am sorry for your misfortune on this one, but with your stats I am sure you will get into another great school. Do you have clinical, volunteer, research type experiences?

I'm ~65-66 Lizzy M. It is pretty disheartening because everyone says that if you have average to mediocre stats, you need to apply super early because it is a rolling admissions process. Since I am a borderline applicant, if I don't get a single II by the end of August I feel like I have good reason for concern.

If they don't want to take a chance on me early on in the interviewing process, why would they want to take a chance on me later on when they have only a few interview slots left and a more competitive pool/unofficial quotas to fill? I could be wrong, maybe each school has a different process and actually meet to discuss borderline applicants while they are more inclined to send 70+ Lizzy M interview invites out like candy. All I know is that I just want 1 shot...1 opportunity...1 moment...1 interview.

3 Rejections 0 Invites

Goodluck guys!

I applied super early too.. but i'm not sure about "rolling admissions" now after looking at various DO and MD school threads.....

Hi, I'm going to be starting my first year at OUWB this coming Monday (!) and I had a really similar experience to what you're describing here. I know I read some advice from some of the OUWB students around here while I was applying last cycle, and thought I'd pay it forward. I had a strong GPA but a sub-30 MCAT, with a LizzyM of 67 and completed my application at Oakland in July. I received an interview in December and was accepted soon afterward. I had a similar experience at most schools. Even as a lower-stats applicant, not getting an II over the summer is not the end of the world.

You guys, literally the worst thing you can do is speculate about how the admissions process works at each individual school. Every school is different. Every application reviewer at a school is different. Submitting your application earlier than someone or having better stats than someone or being IS/OOS is essentially meaningless when it comes to whether or when you'll get an II, acceptance, etc., especially in the context of totally random people on SDN for whom you don't know the whole story. It's impossible to make accurate predictions based on what you read here, and trying to do so will only stress you out. Your applications are submitted, you've done pretty much all you can beyond interviewing well and sending in meaningful updates...just wait and see. I know it sucks, but whatever happens is going to happen at this point and taking shots in the dark about how or why or when is going to drive you crazy.

So long story short, EVERYBODY CHILL OUT and good luck!

PS. Like I said, I'm literally just starting at OUWB so I can't get into too much detail about the student experience yet, but I'm happy to answer any questions you have about my experience with the application process. Also, don't hesitate to use the school itself as a resource - their admissions office is by far the most transparent and helpful one I dealt with while I was applying.

This was very reassuring. Thank you for taking time to type this out. Good luck in your first year!

Hey everyone! I'm a rising M2 at OUWB and am willing to answer any questions you may have. I like giving advice because I didn't have any when I was applying, so if anyone has any questions about applications or OUWB in general, let me know! All I can say now is it is VERY early in the game and everyone just needs to chill out a bit right now. If it comes November/December then you can start worrying about future planning, etc. For now, try to have fun and take your mind off this long waiting game.

In addition, OUWB is very holistic in their process. As you can see, many students who have had high scores have been rejected already. Scores don't matter as much to the admissions team as your life experiences and who you are as a person. Just be yourself, it will come through in your writing, interviews, etc.

Thank you for this post. It gives hope to those of us with average/borderline stats.

Received an interview invitation today!

I'm surprised by the quick turn around as I only submitted my secondary 3 weeks ago.

Congrats! Do you remember the exact date? I submitted mine on 7/15 and I haven't heard anything 🙁

Rejected today via email. Still not sure why I submitted an AMCAS with a 29 MCAT.

When did you submit?

Submitted and Complete on July 10th. Just goes to show you how MD schools place a huge giant overwhelming emphasis on a single standardized test. 6+ years of building an app that is otherwise "fairly competitive" thwarted by one 4 hour test.

That sucks 🙁. It's still early so I'm sure there will be a school out there for you. Not feeling too confident about my AMCAS app myself.

This is absolutely not true (for OUWB anyway). The median is 30 for the MCAT meaning half of the people scored lower. I know many 27-28 MCATs in my class. There is a lot of time left. If the rest of your app is great it will get noticed.

Gandy keep your head up. It's way too early to lose all hope. Seriously. You did your part, so wait a few months and see how things play out. You may be pleasantly surprised in the end.

Except I got rejected lol.

I'm talking about in general. Don't get your hopes down because you were rejected from 1 school. Everyone gets plenty of rejections, even the people who do very well in everything. You'll fit in somewhere

Hope so. Right now, I just wish everyday that I was born as smart as many of the SDNers who get 35+ MCAT scores.
