2015-2016 Oakland University (Beaumont) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Did those of you who have interviewed send thank yous or a letter of intent afterwards? I'm not sure if it's normal to send something, or normal not to
Letters of intent don't really do anything for your app at OUWB. However, sending thank you's to your interviewer is a polite gesture regardless. Hand-written are the best way to go but emails are also appreciated.

can anyone chime in on what the rochester area is like? any fun outdoorsy activities that people do nearby?

Canadian applicant here! II was confirmed completed on Aug 24. I REALLY WANNA GET INTO OUWB. Like holy hell. I used to live over in Troy for like 14 odd years, Oakland county is mah home.

I would love to come back to Michigan to study medicine <3

Canadian too 🙂 when is your interview?

Yes, we have a handful of Canadians in the class! I think there are a few from other parts of the country but most the Canadians I've spoken to are either from Toronto or went to UofT.

Looks like a couple from other places in Ontario and at least one from Montreal and Vancouver each. Basically the only important parts of Canada. I've lived in all 3, so hopefully I can bring some Canadian diversity to next year's class. Probably need an II first though...

I have not heard anything back since getting my II in :/ I hope I hear something good soon!
What do you mean? Like a confirmation of the date you chose?
Edit: nvm i read your posts incorrectly 😛

II = Interview Invite. I think you meant you got your secondary in not an II? Your posts are scaring the Canadian applicants without an II (i.e. me) lol

LOL **** yea sorry. My secondaries were completed and confirmed at the end of August and I haven't heard anything since.

Really hope I do get an interview :X Oakland county is like mah childhood home

Rejected earlier today, complete 7/23ish. Best of luck to those still in the running.

First adcom meeting today according to twitter. Apparently they notified post interview rejections. Oct. 15th is almost here!
Omg. *foolishly puts down deposit on skywriter*

Did OUBW really send out post interview rejection today? Scared to look at my email🙁

Got an II on Monday! Lizzy M 71ish, OOS, Applied 7/28. Interviewing 12/17, looking forward to it and meeting everyone on the interview trail!

I was under the impression all schools had to wait until Oct. 15th to give post interview results... Acceptances and rejections.

Quote from the OUWB Adcom's Twitter account: "Adcom 1st mtg of year: first offers will be made on 10/15. Only denials will be notified today. No offers until 10/15."

Hey everyone, I'm an M1 at OUWB. I'm sick of studying for our final exam so I thought i would say hello. If anyone has any questions about the school or the process feel free to ask, I'll try my best to answer. I know this is a super stressful time for you guys (I interviewed last year around this time), but hang in there! Everything will all work out.... maybe 🙂

Hey thanks for offering. I'd love to get another perspective on the mandatory classes. Pluses, minuses...? Do people feel like there's enough leeway to experiment with their best learning style?

How many interviews will I have at Oakland? Is it two faculty, or one student and one faculty interview? Also, are interviews closed or open file? What information will interviewers have about me? Thanks!

I think I can speak for most of my class in that the "mandatory" lecture requirement doesn't really effect my choice to attend or not. All the regular, everyday classes require a 70% attendance to get honors. If you don't care about honors (or can't get it) then you aren't required to attend most of the lectures. There are certain times and classes that are required: guest lectures, classes that meet 1/wk, etc. but they're usually ones you wouldn't want to miss.

When it comes to learning style there are a ton of options and resources: lots of group study spaces, lots of private study spaces, video recorded lectures, an awesome team that will meet with you to create personal study plans, and 24/7 access to the labs. The reason they encourage students to attend lecture is so we can grow as a community/class, and get to know the faculty better. 70% attendance is really not that hard to hit.

When I interviewed last year it was two interviews with one faculty member each. I could be wrong but I think they have your primary and secondary application but no grades/scores. (Not positive about that but I think that's the case)

This school sounds awesome! Hope to hear good news from them soon. Completed first week of August. Haven't heard a peep.

two separate interviews with physicians, faculty members, deans, or M4 students, according to website. Semi-closed, so they won't know gpa/mcat, but everything else.

Completed secondary on 7/9 and received an email 9/3 that my application was being placed on hold for consideration later in the cycle. I figure this is at least better than a flat-out rejection, but did this happen to anyone else?

I am so excited for my upcoming interview here. What I really appreciate so far:
- Email reminder for my upcoming interview. Not that I'd forget , but I really appreciate having a recent email in my inbox that includes check-in time and location!
- Accommodating diet restrictions for lunch. This is so incredibly considerate and very much appreciated!
- A note about wearing appropriate shoes for the day! I love this, because at each of my interviews there has always been at least one girl sporting awful blisters from wearing heels for a tour. I love that I can feel comfortable changing into nice flats for the tour without being on the receiving end of 😱
- Tour scheduled at the end of the day. I love that this is optional because of the flexibility it allows for travel plans (and changing into my flats without having to change back into heels again!).
- A twitter account that acknowledges our questions and concerns.

Such a great impression so far, and I haven't even interviewed yet. I'm stoked. This school does it right!!
Defs love what I'm seeing so far, & i agree with your list 😀

When did u find out who was hosting you? I was told i would hear back in the last couple of weeks
Within about a week, but I think I was the second interview date. They said it was easier to get someone earlier in the year.

Rejected this morning. Submitted end of July (don't know "complete" date), 3.5 cGPA, 518 MCAT

wow. That's a crazy MCAT! I just can't even imagine what these schools are looking for if they turn down applicants like you. Hope you're other schools are pulling through!

Thanks for the support! Really thought I had a chance here, not because of the stats, but because I'm a non-trad with two years of full-time volunteering and a pretty successful run in an SMP. But oh well - best of luck to everyone else here!
