2015-2016 Oakland University (Beaumont) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Called admissions and they are currently meeting and will be making calls later today

I woke up this morning and thought "it is not a matter of 'if' I am going to get rejected. it is a matter of 'when' they are going to finally give me the bad news" too many people that are clearly much better students than I am have been rejected i.e. The dude above with a 39 or whatever the heck lol.

OUWB seem to be a school that cares far more about "fit" than about stats. It ain't over 'til it's over!

Stats are nearly irrelevant beyond a certain point for OUWB. There's a reason the interviewers don't see your GPA/MCAT too, it's because it doesn't matter for what they're trying to evaluate. If you look at the stats of last several classes, you'll see that they've all hovered around the same place. Trust me, that's not because of lack of quality applicants. The number of people applying to OUWB has skyrocketed over the last few cycles. There is a type of person (or rather, several types of people) they are looking for, and assuming grades are within the average range they will be focusing on outside things.

anyone else flying in today? Send a message if you want

Just a heads up, I know of several people last year who got their scholarship offers a few months after they actually received their acceptance. That said, I think I remember that nobody got scholarship offers last year until the spring regardless of acceptance date. It may be that the policy has changed this year...check with the admissions office to be sure.
they said on interview day they might tell us with acceptance but also could later (this is the first year they are telling anybody early). someone else posted earlier on this thread they got a full scholarship for this app cycle. still of course happy to be accepted anyways 🙂 🙂

also can't med schools see where else you were accepted in february (?) and then make scholarships offers based off that

sorry to hear that! If you don't mind sharing, when did you submit your secondary?

Completed on Aug 24.

Canadian with strong ties to the region. 3.6 cGPA, 31 MCAT. OK volunteering (a good amount of hospital, a summer of physician shadowing, some other stuff).

Im just getting bad news bears everywhere today

I was complete one day after you, my death is coming! :arghh::arghh::arghh::arghh:

Highly doubt anything gets rescheduled over 5" of snow in relatively mild weather (for late November at least).

Wow OU is behind on going through the applications. It seems like people who submitted in August are just hearing back. I submitted in October. I guess that means it will be a while until I hear back

does the admissions office go on a break for thansgiving? if so is it only thursday or is it thursday and friday?

Wow...I have been out of this thread since September... from 11 pages to 18....

anyways, I was rejected pre-interview 10 minutes ago saddening because I really was interested in them... c'est la vie

Also rejected today, complete mid-late August. Good luck :luck: to the rest of you still in the running!

We got an email from the administration today stating the following:

"With the exception of the library, O'Dowd Hall and the balance of OU will be closed Thursday Nov. 26th - Sunday Nov. 29th."

I assume this means the admission office will be closed for Thursday-Sunday!

Yep! The Twitter account stated that Admissions will be closed starting on Wednesday afternoon and will reopen on Monday, Nov 30th.

Reeeeejected just now. This one really hurts. Thought I had a good chance and could really see myself going here. (Complete mid-August)

checks email. looks for rejection. silence. was complete 8/29, guess they haven't gotten around to me yet.

I called their admissions office the other day. I was complete on 8/21, and they told me "based on where I was at" I probably wouldn't hear for another 2-4 weeks, after already being complete for 12 weeks. They were super friendly and actually called me back after I had left a message since someone from the admissions office wasn't available at the time.

Anyone stay with a student host? How long after submitting your request did you hear back? I'm interviewing in a little less than 2 weeks and submitted my host request a few days ago.

Rejected pre interview 🙁 I really wanted OU. I am so sad right now.
Hey!
I interviewed her and I know it must be sad to be rejected (that has happenned plenty of times) but this school is very selective in terms of who they choose. They look at everything (holistic review) ! Keep your head up though! Application cycle is a complete crapshoot 🙂

What is the "fit" OUWB is looking for? Everyone talks about how holistic they are in reviewing applications, but what is the "fit" they're looking for?

What experiences, attributes and metrics are important for holistic review?

The OUWB School of Medicine seeks to admit students with the potential to become competent and caring physicians with a passion for learning and a commitment to serving others. Here are some examples of experiences, attributes, and metrics we like to see from our applicants:
  • Evidence of academic preparation for a rigorous medical school curriculum
  • Dedication to serving others
  • Ability to work in teams toward a shared goal or mission
  • Excellence in an activity that shows commitment, drive and passion
  • Competence for delivering quality care in a global society
  • Understanding of the medical field and what it takes to be a physician

From what I have seen, they take pretty seriously bullets 2 through 4, and select candidates accordingly.

Thanks for the link!

No sarcasm or malice intended, but these qualities seem pretty generic.. I mean I feel like all med schools look for the same stuff. Is that just me?
I don't agree that all med schools look for the same stuff, nor do these seem generic to me. For example, do you have specific ECs that demonstrate how you had a substantive role on a team and worked successfully toward a goal? What did you learn from that experience?

This is just my take, and maybe anyone can BS their way to an interview and an acceptance and address any of those points. Except they don't. I will ponder this during my tryptophan-induced stupor post-turkey dinner. 😉

I think that most schools look for those qualities to some extent, but OUWB really focuses on them. My classmates are extraordinarily kind, compassionate, and generous. Everybody I've talked to has lots of community service and some kind of experience or EC in their past that is unique and shows real commitment or dedication to service. Our dean has a couple relevant "Dean Folberg-isms." First, that we ask our students not only what they want to do, but the kind of person they want to be. To this end, OUWB teaches more than just the science of medicine. Second, in developing the school and curriculum, Dean Folberg said they considered not only how to teach someone to be a good physician or a smart physician, but also how to teach someone to be a kind and compassionate physician. I think OUWB selects students who show potential of developing those qualities. I would venture to say (though I'm a student, not an adcom member) that as long as your GPA and MCAT is within a range predictive of success, OUWB values applicants' "soft skills" as much as or more than their stats.

I know that all sounds a little mushy/cheesy, but I hope it answered your questions! And based on my first few months here I can say pretty confidently that they do demonstrate these values in the way they teach and work with students, patients, etc.

On that note, happy Thanksgiving to everyone!

Thanks for your insight!

I appreciate both of your inputs. At this point, as a current applicant, the ambiguity and seemingly arbitrary nature of selecting students for interviews/acceptances have me a bit jaded in terms of what schools really look for/who makes it past a secondary. It truly does seem quite sporadic, and I know everyone says that.

I think it is difficult for me to know what type of impression my application gives off to ad coms, especially depending on the specific secondary questions and the school itself. It seems like OUWB looks for the right things in a person which is fantastic, but from my current perspective it does seem like a lot of schools preach the same desired qualities in applicants.

Once again I do appreciate both of your inputs! I do believe that some students can "BS" their way into an interview and acceptance, but I think that's true of many many jobs/positions in life. What does that say about a person who can successfully represent themselves in a way that is appealing to a school but does not necessarily accurately reflect their true self? Idk! And I have been pondering that through out this whole process. Applying is tough, mentally and emotionally more than anything, and the worst part is all the questions it brings up about ad coms and the process overall.

I do wish everyone great luck and a happy thanksgiving! Please don't take my words with any negative connotation attached, I know over text attitude/tone can be misconstrued 🙂

When was the soonest anyone who has heard back from admissions after their interview?
