2015-2016 SUNY Downstate Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I tried digging back a few pages and couldn't find what I was looking for: does the admissions office let you leave luggage and such with them while you go through the interview day? I'll be leaving for the airport right after so I'll be bringing all my bags with me to the interview.

Yes you can leave the luggage at the office then continue the interview day.

Has anyone received an email for background check yet? I understood they start running them after the New Years

I normally would not do this. Interviewed and rejected a while back. Does this school purposefully have not-so-nice interviewers? I really did not like my interview experience.

I am a pretty sociable person and good in interview settings, but this was really a surprise.

Wow that's rough. They don't usually give pressure interviews. Sorry about you're experience.

How long did they take to get back to you? Do they mail rejection letters? (I'm still waiting)

Late in adding this but interviewed third week of november and received acceptance packet December 22

More or less a month getting back to me, via email. It's a shame that one interviewer can literally make or break an application regardless of its strength, because I really liked the program besides that. I found it kind of inappropriate to be asked about job income and where else I interviewed.

The interviewer asked you your income!? I think you should email admissions. @Goro what do you think

It really seems that even within a school interviews are highly variable. I had a stressful interview here yet ended up getting accepted. It definitely seems that asking about income crosses a line though.

This doesn't actually seem so odd to me. I have often been asked on applications about my parents' income. If you were applying for a new job you would almost certainly be asked for your previous income. I mean, I have been asked my sexuality on multiple applications, not that I am sensitive about it, but I don't see the line being crossed.

I should point out that I accept the sexuality question for the sake of "diversity/ unique perspectives" and the income question for the sake of qualification/ impressiveness of previous job, which are very different.

I was asked by other students where I was interviewing and would have been more hesitant to share with an interviewer... I think they have a right to ask, I just hope they don't.

Waitlisted, OSS. Actually, not mad at all. Hoping for some love later this spring...

It probably just took them two months to go over exactly how awesome I am.

Def many spots come from the waitlist at Downstate.

I'm still waiting. I actually feel really confident...:headphone:

The school doesn't release the numbers, but there is a LOT of movement off the HFS list once May hits. HFS becomes the alternate list around the last week of May when the class is full, and that still has SOME movement though not as much. Almost all of my friends here had to undergo some sort of wait.

edit: initially read this as "how many spots"... my bad. Microbio has my head spinning.

IS and application was complete near the end of July and I still haven't heard so much as a peep since then... Really hoping January brings good news given the recent IIs that have gone out!

can you please explain to me what the hfs list is? im on the high priority alternate list at upstate and im guessing its like that? also i heard that UB and downstate arent really rolling admission and that someone who interviews in march has the same chance of acceptance as one in september

Congrats to those who have been accepted and have been offered an interview. Do you guys mind sharing your stats if that's not too obnoxious asking?

Nah. The school just doesn't technically have an alternate list until all spots are full. Hfs means they will re-review those applicants in May and choose applicants with which to fill up the remaining spots. People not selected at that point when the class is full are then alternates. At which point you can still see movement it just slows down.

Did anyone else receive an email request for fall grades? They told me that they wanted them to further assess my application.

I did back in mid August when I submitted my secondary and emailed them a copy of my transcript right before winter break

Ok so after you interview you either get accepted, go on hfs or rejected? also do they do rolling admissions meaning the late interviewers basically interview for a waitlist spot? I know at UB they said they dont fill up the class till the last interview day and those people have equal chance of getting in as september interviewers

Yes it's either acceptance, hfs, or rejection post interview. And I'm not entirely sure about your second question. Obv there are less spots open initially (til people holding multiple acceptances are forced to choose one school) for people interviewing later, but I don't think you're ever really just interviewing for a waitlist spot. The school interviews into April, and I've heard people with those late interviews getting in outright and not going on hfs first.

i talked to one of my friends who interviewed last year in the spring and she said she went straight to the waitlist

It's the 10th week now post interview with no decision. Should I call or email them?

Most people call HFS the waitlist, which technically isn't wrong...but it becomes the alternate list in May (its really confusing to explain), so if her interview was in April, its likely that those on HFS were already made alternates due to the class being filled already. I do not completely understand how it all works, can just speak from experience and what I have heard from talks with admissions, as well as my own research when I was in the same position as you guys.

It took them about 12 weeks to notify me of a decision, and I did call to ask but they honestly won't tell you anything other than "you will hear soon" so its best to just try to not think about it too much. (easier said than done, I know)

Is downstate receptive to interview rescheduling? Got an II recently and emailed medadmissions to reschedule but have not heard back.

can anyone provide their impression of the school, facilities and neighborhood?

BTW how many of you had the student guide that told the story of how he got locked in the bathroom that was missing a handle? He said this in response to questions about the facilities lol

Had him two years in a row #Awesome

Has anyone who interviewed December 2nd heard back yet?

What are some close by hotels?

I have never really looked/tried any hotels in the area. Apparently there is a comfort inn about a mile away, but I would say your best bet would be just to look for something closer to JFK (if you're flying) or something not in the IMMEDIATE vicinity of Downstate. I can't imagine hotels/motels in the area being the best honestly.

If you want, the school also offers the student host option which is obviously free and allows you to spend the night before your interview with a student in the Residence Halls, so you have the opportunity to hear about the school from a student in a non-administration controlled setting.

I stayed at the Comfort Inn a mile away (and actually walked to school the day of the interview). I believe it was recently renovated, and the manager and staff were extremely friendly and helpful. However, I will admit my room smelled a bit like cigarette smoke despite it being a non-smoking room so I had to air it out a bit. A slightly small but otherwise standard room. I'd recommend it for the distance to school; it's one less thing to worry about.

im looking at either the comfort inn or the best western plus. the best western got higher ratings

For those who sent an update to the adcom, did anyone e-mail you back to say that it had been added to your file? Thanks!
