2015-2016 SUNY Upstate Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
waiting for a reply as well for HPA status via email. really thinking this might be my last shot in terms of my slew of waitlists

Long time SDN Lurker. Accepted today off the HPA List.
Congratz! You're one lucky person. Do you mind posting stats and what answer they gave you if you asked what your place on the list was.

they just said they "typically reach my spot". same thing they said last year. here we go again

Thanks! Glad to post my stats: Lizzy M 68.

When I spoke to them they said I was in a "very good" position on the list.

Did you all call the admissions office? I called the the other day and the lady told me to send them an email.

Long time lurker as well. Got the call yesterday of the HPA list!!
Interviewed early March, Sent update mid March, waitlisted mid April

What email address did you guys contact to find out your spot? 🙂

They said they have "typically reached my position in previous years" and said I can follow up again in July if I haven't heard from them. The wait continues!!

i think they just give this response to 90% of ppl. Maybe it is a built in auto response on their email acct
other people have been told very good chance and gray area. i wonder if they tell anyone they usually dont reach their spot and i also wonder how big this actual "high priority" list is

gray area? isnt that what "typically we reach your position" implies?

Hello everyone, I am a new member and most likely most of y'all's future classmates. I was wondering in terms of paper work what are we to do after we have submitted everything - transcripts, immunization records, and physical exam? Are we to wait for a confirmation email to give us the green lights to register for classes and etc.? I will be out of the country for a while. I would like to have everything done ASAP for registration and would not like to wait for an email that may never come.

You don't really register for classes - I'd recommend doing all the paperwork (and BLS training) as early as you can so you don't have to worry about it later. Once that's in you kinda just coast into the year.

You can always email or call and they'll tell you what you need to do if you want to travel, to ease your mind.

I have CPR AED training. Is that the same as BLS?

I understand but my question is that after all paper work and proof of BLS licensing have been submitted, will I receive an email or confirmation that everything has been approved for my matriculation?

If I recall correctly, the summer before I started undergraduate, I think that I had to wait until my UG institution notified me that they have received everything before I was allowed to matriculate officially.

There's a checklist on MyUpstate that shows the status of every item you need to submit/complete. I imagine once you have finished all of the requirements you're good to go.

If you are still concerned just call the admissions office. They are very pleasant and are more than happy to answer your questions.

PSA for those accepted: I recently learned that CPR/FA certification does not count for the BLS. And being an EMT doesn't help either. 🙁

BLS = CPR for the professional rescuer, which is what you should have taken during EMT class.

Dont they usually do BLS during orientation? or am i mistaken?

Hey guys quick question, when they update you about being accepted off of the HPA list, do they call AND give an email on the same day?

Hi, I need some advice on housing. I applied for Geneva Tower and got a double apt with a roommate. I really wanted to live alone so now I'm wondering if it would be worth it to find off-campus housing or if I should just stick it out with the double apt. Any thoughts? If I end up not wanting the double apt, would I just check "I do not agree with the terms of the contract"? Thanks!

No, apparently it is not the same.
CPR for the professional rescuer is through the American Red Cross, and CPR - BLS (healthcare provider) is through the American Heart Association. It's my understanding that these courses are equivalent. Do you have something that suggests otherwise?

Yeah- Upstate told me that the former was not good enough. I would call them if you only have the former (as I do).

I would add that Red Cross has a BLS class too but sadly they only offer hybrid/online classes near my crib... 🙁

Hey guys! I was also told I was in a gray area today. Can't help but feel anxious. However I heard that there have been people who were accepted late July (just days away from orientation), so here's to hoping for the best!

By gray area, did they just repeat the phrase "we typically have reached your position in previous years", or was it less optimistic?

It was less optimistic. The person who reached out to me said, "We may not reach you, impossible to predict, check back in July."

This is actually my second time applying to medical school. Things have been quite rough the past two years. 🙁

At least you guys are getting an answer. I have called twice and sent an email to the admission office but I can't get them to tell where I am on the HPAL.
thats interesting. so far we have counted 3 responses: very good chances (i think those guys are done because someone said they got in after being told "we usually reach your spot"); we usually reach your spot; and you are in a gray area.
perhaps there is a 4th response saying "we usually dont reach your position" but im not sure. them not getting back to you may not be optimistic

this whole process is ridiculous. its as if ppl get screwed even with average stats just because they live in the wrong state. If only my family never moved out of NYS lol.
