2015-2016 Texas Tech University - Lubbock Application Thread

So flights from Houston the night before the interview are running between $400 and $600, which is absolute madness. I think I'm gonna do the 8 hour drive after leaving work as early as possible that thursday afternoon (I can't take more than one day off of work that week). Anyone have any hotel recommendations that are as close as possible to the school, since I'll be rolling in close to midnight the night before?

There's the Overton, a Courtyard Marriott (the one on Ave V), a Days Inn, a Staybridge Suites, and more all within an easy 7-10 minute drive to the HSC. Have you looked into staying with a student? Many of them live in an apartment complex that's right across the street from the school, too.

Has anyone who had their interview stayed with a current student? Im kinda hesitant about it, but any input would be great.

I did and I have to say it was a great experience. It gave me some good insight into what life is like for a student (my host was preparing for his step 1). Also, he was a great source of knowledge about the interview process, the medical school, and Lubbock in general.

Should you even apply if you don't have strong ties in West Texas? I have family in Texas, but not WEST Texas...

Yes, although it is getting rather late in the cycle for a Texas application. I just received an II from Lubbock as an out of state student. I have family in east Texas but no ties to west Texas.

did you indicate that on your app?

Yes, I used one of the TMDSAS essays to describe briefly my interest in Texas. There wasn't anything specific in my app that ties me to west Texas, though. I was surprised to get a response from Lubbock, to be honest. I also received an II from El Paso, so it seems clear that strong, existing ties to west Texas really are not a make-or-break part of the app, even for an out-of-state student.

A large majority of the the class are not from West Texas. 33 first year class students of class of 2019 (183 students total) attended Texas Tech for undergrad, although more may be from West Texas.

class average: GPA 3.65, MCAT 32
undergrad attended:
33 from Texas Tech, 32 from the University of Texas at Austin and 12 from Texas A&M

I would say applying as a Texas resident or not will be a strong factor, but there are certainly spots for OOS students (10% = 18 spots).

Hi, I'm new to this thread, congrats on your II! When were you complete and do you mind sharing your stats? Apologies if you stated that somewhere else in the thread, I looked but couldn't find it, so I thought I'd ask 🙂

Hey guys,

My School Rank Preference list was updated with UTH and UTSW immediately after each of those interviews. However, it has been over a week since my TTL interview and I still don't see it on my list. Have any of you who interviewed with TTL seen your list updated with that school yet? If yes, how long did it take?

It takes a couple of weeks to update, give it time. Other schools I interviewed at took longer than that. No need to call so soon. If it wasn't updated by December/January then I would say start calling.

I've heard of a couple of Early Decision acceptances so far - too bad the wait for the rest of us is so much longer!

My interview date still has not gone to committee. So sadly I wont be hearing back from them today 🙁

So guys, I mentioned an interest in the MDMBA program on my interview day, and i was told they'll interview me over the phone.
Since then, almost weekly I've received calls about interviewing with the dual degree program stuff. I cant ever answer because i work 9 to 6. Anyway. This week i received multiple calls and i finally interviewed.
My question is, dual degrees find out earlier right?

Yeah dual degrees are able to find out if they are accepted starting today vs regular MD programs who cannot begin to find out until November 15th.

I think so - OOS, dual degree, and FMAT applicants. Good luck!

Congrats to everyone who just got in!
I have a Question. Should we pay the Deposit Placement Guarantee Fee ($100) now or when we actually decide to attend TTUSOM in Lubbock? Thanks in advance.
Edit: Also the Criminal Background Check. My understanding is that the placement guarantee fee and background check are only for when we decide to attend (so they are like the final transcripts). Just to confirm that my understanding is correct.

Congrats! First day of open acceptance and you're in!

How much is the OOS scholarship if you don't mind me asking?
I'm not OOS so I'm not sure but they might be talking about the scholarship that brings OOS tuition down to IS levels. So from ~30,000 tuition to ~17,000. I think that scholarship goes to all OOS who are accepted

For those of you who interviewed, did the day finish about the time they said (4:45pm)? The only flight that evening is 5:55pm so I'm trying to decide if I'll have to stay another night or not.

Yes, it ended on time. I opted to stay another night because I wasn't sure that I could make it to my flight on time. In retrospect I think it would have been fine to take that flight, although I would have missed out on what ended up being a fun morning of looking around town! Good luck!

Thanks for the info.

TTU is playing Oklahoma State the day after my interview, so that might be a good excuse to stay and watch!!
