2015-2016 Tulane University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I interviewed here recently and was floored by how much I loved it, so I jumped on last year's thread. Last year, they didn't start sending out acceptances immediately on 10/15, but they started to trickle out a few days later and quite a few people posted about receiving acceptances in the weeks that followed. I'm hoping that this year will be similar and that there's a chance we'll hear something before October is out, but who really knows if that'll be the case?

Definitely hoping for good news as well. Good luck to you!

Congratulations! Can you describe your interview day - the types of questions they asked, your opinion on clinical curriculum and opportunities, and anything you liked/disliked about the school?

Reeeejected just now. Complete 7/29. 3.2c/3.3s. 518 MCAT. Nontrad.

Sorry for the delayed reply, been a busy few days.

The interview day consisted of a short morning information session, a standardized patient behavioral interview, a tour of a part of the medical campus/sim center/student lounge, lunch/simultaneous student interview and a faculty interview.

I don't really remember specific questions that I was asked other than "Why Tulane?" but I will say both interviews were very, very relaxed. I really enjoyed the conversations I had with both my student and faculty interviewer. One other question that came up consistently was whether or not we (interviewees) were staying around in the city for extra time, so if you can swing it, definitely hang out a bit in New Orleans to express your interest. The school really emphasizes the importance of the community in everything they do.

I wrote down notes about the clinical curriculum from the presentation, but specifics escape me at the moment. They did just open a brand new hospital less than two months ago which students will be rotating through. Most rotations are in New Orleans at one of the Tulane teaching hospitals, and someone talked about a few at Ochsner. There are also opportunities to go to more rural areas of Louisiana for rotations in FM, etc. And there are opportunities in Baton Rouge as well. If you want to know something more specific let me know and I can check my notes when I get home from work tonight.

As for likes/dislikes, my feelings toward the school are overwhelmingly positive. I spent a lot of time in the student lounge during the day talking to the med students. All seemed very laid back and genuinely happy. Everyone I talked to positively gushed about both their experiences at the school and their lives in New Orleans. I'm very interested in work with the urban underserved, and Tulane has an incredible number of student run clinics (7 or 8 if I remember correctly) that operate in these environments and provide opportunities for early clinical experience and outreach. I love their focus on the community as their top priority, and the fact that students/faculty/support staff all seemed genuinely happy to be there. I'm definitely hoping to hear good news from here starting Thursday!

If you have other questions, feel free to reply/PM me and I'll try to answer. I have the memory of a goldfish, so specifics aren't a strength of mine, but I'll check my notes too if it's something I don't know off of the top of my head.

EDIT: Should have added that both of my interviews were closed file.

Thank you for your response! You touched all the points I was looking for, particularly in terms of clinical rotations and student satisfaction. If you do come up with more details (such as opportunities for longitudinal patient care, mentoring, etc.) that would be great.

Unfortunately, I haven't heard from Tulane yet 🙁 It's been exactly two months since I was complete (8/12) so I hope to hear back soon. I am also interested in working with the urban underserved and I tried hard to make my secondary show how much I would love to go to Tulane, but it seems I'll have to wait and see if they feel the same way.

@simplesloth I know you probably can't go into too much detail but can you explain what you mean by a "standardized patient behavioral interview?"

Thanks! Glad to hear your interview experience was positive!

We were complete on the same day. I still haven't heard anything either. I grew up in New Orleans and my essays basically said "let me come home." I am taking it as a positive that we are still in the pile though 🙂

They made us sign a non-disclosure agreement, so I'm not comfortable going into more detail than that, I hope that's okay! I will say that I was most nervous for that portion, and everyone told me the entire day that it was the very definition of non-stressful. They were totally right. If you are actually a human being and not a robot, you will pass it with flying colors.

Wishing you the best of luck! If that is your interest, Tulane would definitely be a great place to pursue it. Hope you hear the good news soon!

I didn't interview here but I have a decent guess based on what I've read on SDN and other websites. I think it's basically an actor, who pretends to be a patient. And adcoms observe how you interact with him/her. Just a guess though, dont hold me to it haha

Hello!

I have an interview for Tulane coming up and I had just a few questions about the school.

So, I've never been to Louisiana before, let alone New Orleans.
This may sound like a silly question, but what is the political/social climate of Tulane/NOLA? I know LA is a pretty conservative state, I was wondering if the campus and the city reflected that.

Also, just how hot/humid is it in the summer? I read online that it gets pretty bad, but I wanted to hear from personal experiences.

Finally, I was looking at the map of New Orleans and saw that Tulane is right in the middle of the city. How accessible is NOLA from campus? Is it easily accessible by public transportation, or are students mainly confined to campus?

Thank you!
Super excited to visit!

1) NOLA is a blue dot in a deep red state. Also I believe most of the Tulane Med class is Comes from all over the country (cough esp Cali) so you'd probably get a mixture of political beliefs there.
2) in August, you walk outside you're sweating bullets. Then you walk inside and you're freezing. Just stand in the doorframe of whatever building you're closest to though and it's perfect weather! Outside of July/August though the weather is very very nice. You get some rain for a few days or maybe a week and then it's sunny for a while after.
3) if youre talking about downtown Nola, the medical school is right next to the main downtown areas. Maybe a 5-10 min walk from the French quarter. Uptown Nola is more residential, you'll either need a car to commute OR you can use the free Tulane green line shuttle that runs between the uptown and downtown campuses.

I just got an interview invite, and the only date available was February 26th. That seems pretty late in the cycle! Anyone else have this experience?

if any of y'all are looking for hotels for interviews/visits, i called them all up and holiday inn has the best rates, $100 to $120 a night. there's a contact on the e-mail they sent out, and they'll be able to set you up with a room. hope this helps!
Thanks, just booked with them.

Definitely hoping for good news! My other decision didnt pan out like I hoped, but I really feel like Tulane made a strong effort to give enough attention to each interviewee.

Hey y'all, I was accepted a while back, but didn't want to worry anyone because I am in state and applied ED. But, if you get accepted and are sure you are coming to Tulane, DM me! I'd like to get to know my incoming classmates. Good luck everyone!

Haven't received a decision one way or the other yet and am now consumed by anxiety. Congrats to all those who already heard good news!

Reeejected, 10/16. Complete 8/20. Shucks, I really liked this school. Good luck to the rest of you!

Congrats to those who got accepted. Did you guys see any changes in your portal prior getting the acceptance e-mail?

The last time I checked was last night and there was no change. Got the email this morning and poof it was there!

I was complete 9/2. Has anyone around this time received any decisions? I know that this was a bit late.
I was complete 8/19 and still haven't heard anything...though based on recent posts I am expecting a rejection at any point haha

Why do you think that? Maybe no news is good news. Some people that applied after you have already been rejected
