2015-2016 University of Iowa (Carver) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does anyone have any thoughts on doing the entire "3rd year" electives before taking step 1? I can't decide if this a pro or a con, and the first class of the new curriculum hasn't got there yet.

BIG congrats to those who were accepted today! Bet it feels great to be a Hawkeye (officially).

And for those of us still waiting to hear back - cheers to next Tuesday! I imagine Saturday's football game will serve as a pleasant distraction from this waiting game. 😀

Yea, I thought this part of the curriculum was interesting as well. When I asked Dean Rosenthal about it on my interview day, she said that there is a larger and larger emphasis on clinical correlates in the Step 1 so that was their justification for moving it. It will be interesting to see Step 1 Averages when the class takes the Step 1.

Can anyone who interviewed tell me how they got from the airport (Cedar Rapids) to the campus, and from the campus back to the airport? I was planning on using uber, but it seems its very hard to catch an uber around UIowa.

Would those accepted mind posting the day you interviewed?

Maybe I'm analyzing too much from a small sample size, but CCOM's turnaround seems ~1-2 weeks faster for OOS than IS applicants.

Yeah I'm OOS and heard back within less than a month and I thought they said it would be at least 6 weeks based on what they said on interview day, unless I'm mixing my schools up here.

I think the higher the stats the faster the turnaround time for OOS. I recall they evaluate and count OOS differently and they said not to give up until they small pool in January.

OOS, complete since 7/23, and still "under review"...anyone else in the same boat?

Should we be worried since interviews end in January? :nailbiting:

OOS, complete since 9/1 and have heard nothing back yet. My file status just says "Your File is Complete."

Anyone accepted so far with a LizzyM score in the 60s? I am IS and interviewed 9/25. I am assuming I have not heard anything yet due to having lower stats.

Man, was I impressed by Carver after my recent visitation and interview. Loved both the med school and Iowa City

Interviewed recently. Our group was told to put Iowa out of our minds until January and that us more recent interviewers will not hear from them until Jan-March

^anyone wanna answer this? Their website says theres a shuttle to iowa city to the airport (and back) for $75, I couldnt find anything about it...

I rented a car. There were also a few taxis sitting around.

I see, I guess that's my safest bet. I'm under 25 though, which rental company did you go through if you dont mind me asking?

I assume there arent too many ubers sitting around in cedar rapids

Haha, I would guess not.

Sorry, I don't know anything about under 25 fees. I used Enterprise, and I spent about $60 for a one day rental.

Iowa lists these on their website, you could call and ask:

Is taxicab shuttle service available?

The Cedar Rapids Airport Shuttle Service is what you're talking about - it's $38 each way. This was a lot less expensive than the poor guy on my interview day who paid for a normal cab. If you and other interviewees share the shuttle on the way back to the airport from the interview day, it cuts the cost right in half - it's not a per person cost if you book together. So I'd consider booking the shuttle for the way out, and then early on the interview day see if anyone else wants to share it back to the airport and then make the reservation during a free moment during lunch.

Yep, it's been about 8 weeks of silence for me. I think I've been waitlisted.
Don't lose hope yet! More likely to be final pooled than waitlisted at this point. They accept a large portion of their incoming class from this pool so a delayed acceptance may still come your way in March.

That's what they said on my day too, but I was accepted 3 weeks later. OOS. It was a pleasant surprise.

OOS, My LizzyM is mid 60s and the decision only took 3 weeks, so I think the process remains elusive.

Is the admissions office here receptive to ita requests?

If I am OOS and have been quite for a long time, is there any hope for me? Please give some average applicants some love haha

Same here. If begging and presents help I would shower them with wine and roses...or cookies and tequila.

Any idea when a Facebook gets made normally?

I'm an average OOS applicant, interviewed mid-October, accepted mid November. There is hope, but they are looking for a good fit.
Congrats 🙂 If they haven't rejected me yet, then maybe theyre still considering me? Any updates on that form your interview?

And the golden hour has passed. This Tuesday feels more melancholy than Tuesdays prior...starting to wonder if I'll be swimming in the final pool.

Going to delude myself again with another reason why the admissions office has (remotely plausibly) slowed down. Last Tuesday I assumed they didn't meet due to Thanksgiving; this week I'm envisioning them having an early Christmas office party lol.

No wonder they're taking so long getting back to us, too busy partying...
