2015-2016 University of Iowa (Carver) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does anyone have any wisdom about what to do when waiting on the decision (>6 wks. since interview)? Is this a time for contacting the office of admissions for an update or sending a "reiteration of eagerness" email?

Or is the best move to just sit tight?

Looking forward to second look here, didn't get a great chance to explore IC when I was there last.

Can anyone provide a few common apartments that med students live in?

Aspire (west campus) is a pretty common one! Its really nice and fairly new, pet friendly, but they fill up fast!

Thanks, it seems pretty nice, but I am looking for something slightly more removed I think. It may take some personal exploring to see if what I want exists.

I'm very interested in the medical fraternities. If someone could either post or PM me more info on what it's like to live in/be a part of one, I'd really appreciate it! Thanks!

Rejected via email. Mildly annoying process to get to the rejection letter (the email just says "a decision has been made" and you have to go to the portal), but oh well. Best of luck to all of you!

Sorry to hear this. Was this pre or post interview?

Good luck with the rest of your application cycle!

Thanks for the update, Rugger and Nova, and congratulations to everyone accepted!!

Congrats all you new hawkeyes 🙂

btw--is it too early to start seeing final pool notifications? has anyone received/heard of any so far in this cycle?

What is a final pool notification?

If it's what I think it is, I doubt that's possible. Not that it's not late at this point in the cycle, but they haven't even hit their secondary due date yet. Dec 15th.

Yea, that makes sense. Just getting a little anxious, I guess. I was just looking over some past threads and it looked like sometimes people's secondary pages would indicate they were "final pooled" without the sending of an email. I'm sure you're right though--it's probably too early to start seeing that

The final pool notification comes mid-January. Some past threads mention acceptances throughout December --> final pool mid-January --> final decisions (acceptance/rejection/waitlist) mid-March --> waitlist movement until late spring/early summer.

I think most people assume, after a certain point, that they're final pooled even though they haven't received the e-mail. Past threads also have people getting acceptances 2-3 months post-interview so hope is not lost! Still in the rolling phase. 🙂

Hey, so I don't know if anyone will have an answer to this, but how does Iowa choose the applicants they go over for each meeting, aside from the fact that they look at IS and OOS seperately? I remember on interview day that they said they choose certain people to talk about at an adcom meeting, but they weren't specific about how they did that. For example, does each pair of interviewers present on all the applicants they had that one day, or do they group people with similar stats, etc.? Just getting a bit paranoid over here, seeing as some people who interviewed the same day as me have already heard back....

they meet every other week or so, interviews are scored + comments, same with PBL session. ADCOM votes applicants for immediate acceptance, defer or reject. They are backed up right now, I think they are taking like 6-12 weeks to give a decision, depending on when you interviewed. Dont quote me on any of this, this is all off the record.

Well, I have seen a ton of people accepted at my interview date, but I will still hold out hope until I get that horrible rejection letter.

I always wonder how they pick us out of "The Pile" for review. They emphasize the non-linearity of the process, and the fact that it's not necessarily sequential...but it seems nonsensical. Not sure if I should remain hopeful or resign myself to the final pool.

If only this process were more transparent ughhh.

Thank you for taking the time to interview with the Carver College of Medicine. We realize you have many choices when it comes to medical schools, and we appreciate you visiting our campus. We’d like to get your feedback on the application and interview process. Please take just a few moments to complete this survey.

Almost had a heart attack. Thanks CCOM.

Does anyone know if the school starts an accepted applicants Facebook group?

Judging from the admins of past CCOM class FB groups, it seems that an accepted student typically creates the group. Is anyone feeling particularly ambitious today and would like to volunteer? I've got a severe case of the Mondays, and I'm not feeling very motivated today. 😴

when does Iowa stop giving interviews? Trying to decide if I should use up my last update now for something small or wait to see if anything happens significant

Iowa's website says interviews are held Sept-Jan. I'm guessing their last interview days are being scheduled now, if they haven't been already.

Please put your case of the Mondays to good use! I fully support your unproductivity.

I hope more decisions will come out tomorrow! I can't wait for the new year >.<

Rebecca Black needs to come out with a new weekday song so that we can celebrate the fact that it is TUESDAY! Get pumped, everyone. This is our week. Good luck!
