2015-2016 University of Iowa (Carver) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congrats, goldspirit12! 😀

May I distract you from your glee with two questions:
  • where does the decision appear on the secondary app?
  • when did you interview?
Thanks and congrats again!
A new tab shows up on your portal called "admissions decision" or something like that.

Thanks, user3471!

You first receive an email saying that the committee has made an admissions decision and to go to your secondary to view it. A new Admissions Committee Decision Tab should be there with the decision!

I'm IS and interviewed 9/28.

Thanks! Lol I interviewed that day, too--I was one of the OOS guys. Glad someone from our crew made it 🙂 That was a great interview group

To all the IS that were accepted, can I ask what the stats were? GPA, MCAT, Extracurriulars?

Was anyone offered aid in their acceptance?

Or is merit-based aid detailed in the follow-up communication?

Those two IS with acceptances have LizzyM of 73 and 71. There must be a huge drop off for LizzyM scores because they both have way more IIs and acceptances than I could ever dream of. :|

Or maybe those are stellar scores...I really don't know.

LizzyM 71, and I'm not really sure what to say about my extracurriculars. I feel like they're pretty run of the mill. Some clinical volunteering, non-clinical volunteering, shadowing, and other things that I like to do at my university. I can't really think of anything in my application that would make me special (like having a really compelling story to tell or something). I guess I've just been extremely fortunate in this cycle.

II yesterday! I honestly did not think I would be considered! On my secondary I said I was OOS, but recieved an email stating that I am IS. Supposedly graduating from an Iowa high school within the past four years counts! Best suprise ever!

My stats are relatively low, but my extracurriculars are unique. Important reminder to all who are second guessing themselves: numbers (while important) do NOT define you! Stay strong, everyone. Ignore the haters, and trust that the admissions process is not as black and white as it is sometimes portrayed on SDN. Good vibes to all :biglove:

Will we get a decision notification if we are deferred until the final pool or will we just know from silence? I interviewed 9/11 and hadn't gotten any decision. just curious !

They did say you could call and ask questions at any time.

Congrats! Can i ask when were you complete?

Anyone else interviewing here this week?

This will be my first interview of the cycle so I'm particularly nervous. Does anyone have any good tips or methods for not freaking out the night before? :heckyeah::heckyeah:

Interviewing tomorrow and I went and checked out where to go which really helped me ease my nerves. If you can, visit downtown and take a walk! It's going to be great 🙂 good luck!

Interviewed on Friday. Great school, good interview, fun case-based learning session. OOS hoping for some love.
Review the interview guide, so you can have a concise answer for the three required questions, then just relax. We talked about a lot of things. Very conversational.

Is interview guide in your invite email, online, or something they give you at your visit? Thanks!

Also, does anyone have any idea how many interviews and acceptances have been issued so far?

One more question for everyone. Where did you guys fly into, is there a cheap shuttle or anything that you used, and where did you stay?

Thanks, I'll remain silent for a while

Can someone who has interviewed verify the 3 required questions? Are they:

1. Why do you want to be a doctor?
2. What would you do if patient refused blood transfusion based on religious beliefs?
3. Describe a time you went above and beyond and how it impacted you.

The SDN interview feedback doesn't have any replies from 2015, so just want to make sure they haven't changed. Thanks! 🙂

Not comfortable sharing specifics, but I was not asked those questions for my structured interview portion.

I was scheduled to fly into Cedar Rapids, but got rerouted to Moline, IL which was an hour drive. I flew out of Cedar Rapids, which is about a 20 minute drive.

I rented a car, but there is a shuttle listed in the interview accommodations stuff.

I stayed at the heartland inn and would highly recommend. Use the code provided and it is cheap with a good breakfast. They also offered a shuttle to the campus for free.

I did not have this set or the set mentioned by @Flashfan.

The structured questions change for each interview day. They will, without a doubt, recycle questions throughout the cycle, but no one will be able to tell you exactly which 3 you will get on your day.

I was lucky to get questions already mentioned in the Interview feedback area, but then the rest of it was conversational. More than any interview, I feel they are looking for fit, whether or not your are a robot or serial killer. We talked about music, school, family, etc. It was actually the most relaxed interview so far. And the learning session may or may not have an impact. The MS4s that ran it seemed to indicate that they have no part in the decision.

I flew into Cedar Rapids and used the airport shuttle service, round trip costs $70. I stayed with a student host.

Thanks everyone! I thought there were three questions that everyone got, based on what people were saying on this thread. Thanks for the info though. Sounds like they follow general themes, but aren't the exact same questions.

What day do you guys think they'll announce the weekly acceptances this week? Desperately anxious here lol

Hey guys! I am a current M1 here and I love it! Having just went through the interview process last year feel free to ask me any questions! I also went to undergrad at Iowa so I can possibly answer questions about the school/Iowa City/Coralville in general. Also not to get anyone too excited, but last year they definitely released acceptances on Tuesdays, I got mine a little before noon. Of course not sure if they will do it the same way but that is how it was for me.

Not sure if you already interviewed, but if you didn't, I would stop in a bar/diner called Donnelly's. Tasty, food, nice place, nice people. Definitely put me at ease the night before and helped me get a bit settled in the area.

Also, I took a walk to the bldg where I'd be interviewing, so that kind of helped me get oriented and keep my mind settled in the morning. Something about being able to imagine where I'm going gets me settled about the interview day 🙂

Interview-wise, I just looked over the SDN interview feedback. That was pretty helpful in prepping for the interview. For the most part, it's incredibly relaxed and the people who volunteer to interview are great. Good luck!

Hello, everyone! From previous years, with what frequency were decisions sent out? Does anyone know? Thanks!

Last week they announced them all on Thursday from what I can tell. Can't it be Thursday yet?!? I interviewed on 9/9 and I am so anxious!

That's because Thursday was 10/15 - the first day of acceptances. Last year, after 10/15, it took a few weeks for more to roll out (at least to people who post on SDN). Historically, they do Tuesday acceptances. Based on last year's time frame, I'm guessing 11/10 another batch of acceptances. Take my neurotic speculation for what it's worth though (not much).

ETA: After that, it was pretty much weekly

I interviewed around the same time you did and heard last week.

Did anyone accepted receive an official letter yet?

Or is that the same as the pdf on the decisions page? Trying to see if merit-based aid would have already been offered at this point.

I got a letter in the mail that was different from the PDF one, but it did not mention aid.

Mind saying when you got the mail?

Thanks!
It arrived yesterday. It was just a letter reminding me to log onto their online system and to send in final transcripts when I finish my degree.

To those of you who were excepted/interviewed: how much do you think performance in the case based learning session matters? Admissions staff seemed to give it some weight but were vague. I interviewed 9/18 if any of my fellow interviewees are lurking.

I haven't the slightest idea. I feel like I did okay, but not awesome.

I kinda got the impression that as long as you participated, you're fine. The only way I can see it having a real impact on your decision is if you either did not participate at all or were arrogant and talked over everyone, but I could be wrong.

This is the impression I got too. It's hard to know how they actually interpret the info, but they definitely try to sell it as seeing how you interact with others. Also, fwiw, described to me by a friend who is an M2 as the group session which doesn't matter but actually matters.
