2015-2016 University of Kentucky Application Thread

If you guys don't mind me asking, are you IS and what are your stats? I took the new MCAT and got a 508 but I feel like they don't know what to do with the new MCAT unless it's a score of 520+. My GPA isn't an issue because it's a 3.9 so I feel like it's my MCAT score that's keeping me on hold. I'm also IS so I feel like I should have had a pretty good shot, but I guess not!

Got the acceptance call 1/21, interviewed 1/12. Out of State. Very excited! Good luck to everyone still in the running.

Does anyone know if they give out acceptance calls over the weekend? I interviewed 1/16 and I don't know if I should be anxiously sitting by my phone all weekend or if I should hold off any expectations for a call until Monday

Campus is closed today for a snow storm, so I wouldn't expect it this weekend.

I got the same hold email, but I'm kind of happy about it. I'm sure a lot of people got some bad news with their update, so I'm viewing it as getting through another cut and I'm trying to stay optimistic.

I thought the same thing, but since no one has reported being rejected from a post interview hold that feeling has gone away.

I just called the Admissions Office and received the semi-bad news that I am on the hold list. For anyone wondering, the lady told me that the class is already full.

Does anybody know if we will need to get a full physical exam done before starting in July?

Has anyone heard about scholarships? All the emails said they'd tell us by Feb. 15

In the past, they have only notified people of scholarships if they received one. They didn't notify you if you did not receive a scholarship. It's likely it will be the same this year.

Has anyone who interviewed on Jan or Feb heard back from the admissions office if they were put on 'HOLD' or the 'alternate list'?

Anybody know when they said they were going to look over the hold list again? Was it in late April or May?

I asked about this, and they said applications on hold will be reviewed again sometime during April.

Interviewed on Jan 26th and got a letter in the mail a few weeks back that I have been deferred.

Is being deferred and being put on hold list the same thing?

Does anyone have a link to portal to see your status? I scoured my emails from UK for the link but can't find it. Is there one?

Yes, there are only 3 outcomes to an interview - accept, reject, reconsider later

I believe late April is when they will re-review all the files to generate an actual wait-list. Unfortunately, they do not reveal wait-list ranks to applicants. Hope you hear good news then!

Thanks for the info!

Curious though, they sent an email to all pending interviewees late January saying the class is full. Does this mean all interviewees whom adcom "likes" are put on hold/deferred? Or are there still acceptances going around at this time?

No, unfortunately they can't offer more acceptances at this point so you're correct that even their favorite applicants who interview late Feb/March get put on hold. I know plenty of people in my class and others though that eventually got accepted from these late interview groups, so it's not a kiss of death! It just means you have to (painfully) wait a little longer to hear back.

Really appreciate your input, thank you!

Interviewed late Feb. Got accepted.
Congrats! This is definitely the exception not the norm at this time of year. I knew the second I wrote that no one got straight acceptances this late that someone would come on and post about how they did just that. Your stats are pretty exceptional though.

It appears they have started to make their alternate list. Was put on alternate list today.

I was offered an alternate list position but chose to withdraw. I just can't see myself living in Lexington, compared to my other options. Good luck to everyone still in the running!

I was told they sent snail mail letters with rejections. I was selected for the waitlist. Does anyone know how many people are given waitlist spots and how many seats usually open for alternates?

rejection today via letter. I will not go gently into the night! One more MD hope...

Am kind of new to SDN, but applied to UK for this application cycle. Does anyone know the difference between the Alternate list and the Waitlist with respect to UKCOM? I was recently placed on the alternate list as well. Thanks!

They're the same thing.

Thanks. I asked because someone mentioned earlier that they have been put on a waitlist!

Has anyone got awarded any more merit money? They said redistributions would happen around today

does UK consider poor pre med course grades that are 22 years old? I applied to another school and although my bachelors GPA was 3.9 and I repeated a few of the poor grade courses with good grades, I was denied admission due to grades from 22 years ago. I can't help but wonder if my age has something to do with it. I am 42 now. Advice please.... I was told to seek out academic enhancement programs but I cannot leave the state. Our housing is provided by husbands job and the money I have I was saving for med school

This school obviously accepts people with criminal records because the application asks about it. If they consider applicants with criminal records then why not people with a poor academic record that was over 20 years ago?! Dealing with two parents with terminal illnesses at 20 years of age should be reason enough to dismiss the poor grades then, especially considering the 2nd bachelors degree with 3.9. I need other perspectives. Thanks

I'd check out UPike if you're serious about becoming a doctor. Unfortunately those grades stay on the transcript so I would assume theyd still be factored in to the overall GPA. But DO schools allow grade replacement. Aka, those bad grades would be replaced by the good ones so you wouldn't have to worry about those old grades anymore.

I doubt it's strictly your age that is a concern, because there is a current first year student here at UK that is close to your same age. I can't say for sure how they look at grades from that far in the past though.

Oldest person in our class (M2) started at 43, so age is not an issue here. Have you reached out for feedback? It's my understanding that the admissions office is here happy to provide input on why people's applications were unsuccessful. It's very difficult for anyone outside the Admissions Office to advise you on where your application is weakest.

Were you granted an interview? If you interviewed, it may have more to do with how your interview went than your primary/secondary applications. If you weren't offered an interview, it was probably something in your primary/secondary. Remember though that not getting in doesn't necessarily mean they don't think you are qualified. I know here at UK they were very sad not to be able to accept many of the applicants this year. There were simply too many qualified people who applied.

Sorry it didn't work out for you this cycle, and best of luck to you!

Has anyone on the alternate list heard anything so far? Or does anyone know if there has been some movement on the alternate list?
