2015-2016 Wake Forest University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Around 30-40% I guess then.

Don't get your hopes up.

"We're starting off the New Year with these stats: Total number of applications received - 8,602, a 6% increase. Eighty five percent were sent a secondary application. Interviewed - 375 with about 200+ to go. Offers are out to about 80% of the class. National stats are at 49,836 applications for about 19,000 places with 10,078 total offers out at this time."

This is from Wake's Facebook page discussing the last application cycle.

Should I write about my connection when I really don't have any as an OOS applicant? I love the state from family vacations and was going to spin that into why I applied to Wake but I don't know if that would be appropriate.

I would personally advise against this.. as it seems you like Wake more for its surrounding vacation sites rather than the school's curriculum, mission, and facilities. I'm also struggling to determine if I will write a "Why Wake" essay, but the question seems to directly ask for any connection such as residency in NC.

So when the LOR requirement says 1 from science faculty and 1 from non science, can the non science be from a physician? Or is it referring to a non science professor?

Usually refers to non-science professor.

If you have been out of school, that letter can be from a supervisor. I'm not sure what the requirement is if you're still in undergrad though

Where are you getting this requirement from? First, if it says one science and one non science, then I would not think it needs to be a professor. The schools that require a non science faculty member specifically say that. But as far as I have seen, the only requirement WF has if you are submitting individual letters is that one must be from a science professor.

"If your school does not have a Pre-Medical Committee we will accept two letters of recommendation, with at least one from a science faculty member."

On the secondary form when you click summary, it said that next to the letters of evaluation block.

I see what you're saying now. I called and they said the only requirement is one science so it is okay to submit two science LOR.

If I haven't gotten a secondary by now, does it mean I won't get one? Wake is one of my top choices... my MCAT scores just got uploaded on 7/22, but I don't know how long it takes for the screening process. Getting super nervous over here.

I too was verified about a week ago and my MCAT scores came 7/22 and still no secondary

I took the MCAT in June also. The status page still says my account is holding for MCAT scores. It also says it can take 2-3 weeks for scores to be added to your app. I would give it another week then call or email.

I was happy to submit this yesterday. And to reiterate what someone said, apostrophes will change to question marks after you save your essays! So, be sure to return to your essays to fix it.

You should get in the habit of copy / pasting from notepad or textedit to remove rich text features from your essay. I'd be careful if you make any edits on TextEdit, since the apostrophes are rendered as another character.

Great tip! I'll be doing this from now on.

I still got the '-->? issue even when copying and pasting from Text Edit, just FYI. But Wake is aware of this issue and won't hold it against anyone!

Is the consensus that we don't need a non-science LOR? Thanks in advance!

"The Committee on Admissions prefers a Pre-Medical or Pre-Health Committee report. However, if your school uses a letter service we will accept their packet of letters. If your school does not have a Pre-Medical Committee we will accept two letters of recommendation, with at least one from a science faculty member.

If you have completed your undergraduate degree and are currently enrolled in a graduate program or working, you should submit two letters of recommendation with at least one from the graduate program faculty member/advisor or an employer."

Aside from that science faculty member, if you are a traditional applicant I would think the other letter is your choice of evaluator. I am non-trad, so the other one was from my PI.

Yeah I agree that I shouldn't do vacations after thinking about it but I am with you about being unsure of doing a "Why Wake" essay. I certainly don't want to leave an essay empty usually, but if I don't have anything to say that will answer the actual question then I don't know what to do.

Great thread! I just read all of it as I am filling out my secondary and looking for some info. I am more psyched then ever to apply here now. It is a great school, but most important- it seems to have a great community-people, and I love that. The dean participating on the thread , that is just awesome 👍.

Anyways, I couldn't find a clear answer for OOS question "Describe any connection you have to Wake Forest School of Medicine, Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem, or North Carolina (200 words or less)." I was thinking about writing the specific things that I like about the program-school. But that would be more like a "why" not a "connection" in my opinion. Any suggestions?

I thought they meant family members, significant others who live there, growing up in NC??

I was planning on leaving this blank since it is an optional essay and I believe it is really only supposed to be to give a chance for people who have a direct connection such as family etc. who are affiliated with the school or area to explain it.

I will leave it blank as well!!! Good luck everyone

Jeez, why'd the fee go up from 100 last year to 125 this year? fml

anyways: submitted! hoping for some love on my reapplication

True, I guess I just meant that the only examples I can come up with are from activities on my primary. I wouldn't write the same thing in the secondary but it would just come from the same work or volunteer experience I have on my primary. Just expanded upon.

I don't see any problem using activities from your primary as material for this question...As long as you provide some new info or context that adds to your app. That's just my guess though

Is an aunt in Winston-Salem a worthwhile connection?......Or should I just leave this blank

IMO, yes. Especially if you have some sort of decent relation with her. I feel like any family connections in area show the adcom that you would have a higher chance of matriculating if accepted.

Are you supposed to get a confirmation email? I submitted on Sunday and made my payment but still nothing. Just worried because my 3 week deadline is tomorrow

@gogata23 you're fine. I called and they complete files in batches (around every 2 weeks). You'll get a complete email when they process the next set.

Was the 2-3 week turnaround screening time pretty consistent for everyone who received a secondary?

Verified 6/26 and didn't receive a secondary yet, grew impatient, called this am, and apparently it was first sent by email three weeks ago 🙁
They're re-sending the email.

I'm glad you said something because I had assumed I had gotten screened out. I emailed admissions and the same thing happened to me (and I'm sure has happened to more people). Hopefully we'll get the secondary soon!

Oh wow really? I should call them too then!! Thanks for posting

Did you check your status on their website? Did it indicate you had already received the secondary? My status still shows waiting for MCAT (scores released 7/21). The status message says it could take 2-3 weeks for scores to be added, but the 3 week deadline is approaching.

Has anyone with a June MCAT test date received a secondary yet?

I called admissions and the woman on the phone said they haven't received my scores yet, but they should get them in the next download. She also said it could be two more weeks before I hear from them.

It's strange that they would receive scores for some applicants that took the MCAT in June and not others. It's a little frustrating, especially considering that interview invites are going out. It seems like being several weeks behind other applications would be a significant disadvantage.

Congrats on all the IIs! Are you all IS or OOS?

So what is the consensus about individual LOR. Only two, or you can submit more?
